  • We introduce and study notions of expansivity, topological stability and persistence for Borel measures with respect to time varying bi-measurable maps on metric spaces. We prove that on Mandelkern locally compact metric spaces expansive persistent measures are topologically stable in the class of all time varying homeomorphisms.

  • Posttranplantations lymphoproliferative disease (PTLD) is a common and life-threatening complication for soid organ transplantation associated with the use of chronic immunosuppression and Epstein-Barr virus. There is no standardized treatment algorithm, but numerous management strategies are vaiable. Partial splenic embolization (PSE) had been demonstrated to be an effetive alternatie to splenectomy for patients hypersplenism and portal hypertension. PSE has the advantages of non-invasive intervention and resolution of the complications of hypersplenism. We report the effect of the PSE in a 6-year old male liver transplantation recepient with PTLD who has undergone persistent hypersplenism post-transplant. We reduced immunosuppression agent, started antiviral agent. We started with interferon and IV globulin one month after admission. Hepatosplenomegaly and cervical lymphadenopathy were improved. But fever was not subside. We selectively embolized the lower pole of the spleen to achieve a 50~60% reduction in flow as determined by angiography. After embolization, fever subside and peripheral blood findings were improved. Follow up abdominal CT revealed reduced volume of spleen due to ischemic change and there was no multiple enlarged mesenteric lymphnode compared to preembolization state. We thick that PSE is a safe an effetive treatment modality of PTLD with persistent hypersplenism in patients twho failed to medical treatment.

  • Objectives: Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are known to be the detrimental chemicals in the body, even at low levels, and are stored in adipose tissue. Recently, POPs have been reported to be associated with chronic diseases, including cancer and cardiovascular disease, and aging and obesity are reported as common factors in chronic disease. However, there have been only a few studies on the associations of POPs with age and body mass index (BMI) in Korea. Therefore, we analyzed the associations of serum POPs levels with age and BMI in Korea. Methods: This cross-sectional study includes 444 subjects (253 men and 191 women) from the Korean Cancer Prevention Study-II (2004-2011). Serum levels of 33 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and 19 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were measured by a gas chromatographer (Agilent 6890) coupled to high resolution mass spectrometer (JEOL JMS-800D). Results: Concentrations of PCB 153 (men: 12.26 ng/g lipid, women: 10.50 ng/g lipid) and p,p'-DDE (men: 94.66 ng/g lipid, women: 96.66 ng/g lipid) were the highest among serum PCBs and OCPs, respectively. PCBs and OCPs were significantly positively correlated with age in both sexes. After adjustment for age, non-dioxin like PCBs were significantly negatively correlated with body mass in women. However, cis-heptachlor epoxide was significantly positively correlated with body mass index in both sexes. When analyzed by sex, stronger associations were shown between POPs and age in men and POPs and BMI in women. Conclusion: These results may provide baseline data for the study of POPs and for the health management field in Korea.

  • Conditionally heteroscedastic time series models such as GARCH processes have frequently provided useful approximations to the real aspects of financial time series. It is not uncommon that financial time series exhibits near non-stationary, say, integrated phenomenon. For stationary GARCH processes, a shock to the current conditional variance will be exponentially converging to zero and thus asymptotically negligible for the future conditional variance. However, for the case of integrated process, the effect will remain for a long time, i.e., we have a persistent effect of a current shock on the future observations. We are here concerned with providing empirical evidences of persistent GARCH(1,1) for various fifteen domestic financial time series including KOSPI, KOSDAQ and won-dollar exchange rate. To this end, kurtosis and Integrated-GARCH(1,1) fits are reported for each data.

  • Background: There are few pharmacologic options to reduce erythema and flushing in patients with recalcitrant erythematotelangiectatic rosacea (ETR). We previously reported two cases of refractory flushing and erythema of rosacea that were successfully treated with intradermal botulinum toxin injection, and additional research is needed to prove the efficacy and safety of this treatment. Objective: To report the efficacy and safety of botulinum toxin injection as an aid in persistent erythema of rosacea patients. Methods: A total of 20 Korean patients with recalcitrant ETR were enrolled to receive treatment by injection of botulinum toxin. Patients received one treatment of intradermal botulinum toxin injection and were assessed 1, 2, 4, and 8 weeks after treatment. The severity of erythema and telangiectasia was investigated by a non-treating physician, and the Erythema Index (EI) was assessed by mexameter at each visit. Patient satisfaction and any adverse events were also assessed at each visit. Results: 17 patients completed all follow-up visits and were included in the analysis. Intradermal injection of botulinum toxin significantly reduced erythema severity and EI in ETR patients. Patients reported a satisfaction score of $2.94{\pm}0.56$ at 8 weeks after treatment. Except for three patients who discontinued the study early due to inconvenience of facial muscle paralysis, 17 patients participating in the final analysis did not report side effects except injection pain at the time of the procedure. Conclusion: Intradermal injection of botulinum toxin can be used as an effective and relatively safe adjuvant agent for recalcitrant and persistent erythema of ETR patients.

  • Vibrations caused by automobile engine are absorbed mostly by a passive-type engine mount. However, user specifications for automobile vibrations require more stringent conditions and higher standard. Hence, active-type engine mount have been developed to cope with such specifications. The active-type engine mount consists of sensor, actuator and controller where a control algorithm is implemented. The performance of the active engine mount depends on the control algorithm if the sensor and actuator satisfies the specification. The control algorithm should be able to suppress persistent vibrations caused by the engine which are related to engine revolution. In this study, three control algorithms are considered for suppressing persistent vibrations, which are the positive position feedback control algorithm, the strain-rate feedback control algorithm, and the modified higher harmonic control algorithm. Experimental results show that all the control algorithms considered in this study are effective in suppressing resonant vibrations but the modified higher harmonic controller is the most effective controller for non-resonant vibrations.

  • In this paper, we newly propose a performance enhanced CSMA/CD MAC(Medium Access Control) protocol for the Ethernet which changes its operation mode dynamically according to the network status, not fixed it as one of p-persistent mode and non-persistent mode. Dynamic mode change occurs independently on each node, and uses the consecutive success count and the fail count of the frame transmission. The simulation result shows that the dynamic mode change maintains the enhanced network utilization and transmission delay characteristics. Also we show the implementation simplicity of our MAC protocol through its conceptual design using the Ethernet commercial chip as it stands.

  • Because arrhythmia occurs irregularly, it should be examined for at least 24 hours for accurate diagnosis. For this reason, this paper developed firmware software for arrhythmia detection and prevented consumption of temporal and human resources and enabled continuous management and early diagnosis. Prior to the experiment, the interval between the R peaks of the QRS Complex was calculated using the Pan-Tompkins algorithm. The developed firmware software designed and implemented an algorithm to detect arrhythmia such as tachycardia, bradycardia, ventricular tachycardia, persistent tachycardia, and non-persistent tachycardia, and a data transmission format to monitor the collected data based on BLE. As a result of the experiment, arrhythmia was found in real time according to the change in BPM as designed in this paper. And the data quality for BLE communication was verified by comparing the sensor's serial communication value with the Android application reception value. In the future, wearable devices for real-time arrhythmia detection will be lightweight and developed firmware software will be applied.

  • Effects of crack separation, bridge area, on the tensile behaviour of concrete are studied experimentally and numerically through the Brazilian tensile test. The physical data obtained from the Brazilian tests are used to calibrate the two-dimensional particle flow code based on discrete element method (DEM). Then some specially designed Brazilian disc specimens containing two parallel cracks are used to perform the physical tests in the laboratory and numerically simulated to make the suitable numerical models to be tested. The experimental and numerical results of the Brazilian disc specimens are compared to conclude the validity and applicability of these models used in this research. Validation of the simulated models can be easily checked with the results of Brazilian tests performed on non-persistent cracked physical models. The Brazilian discs used in this work have a diameter of 54 mm and contain two parallel centred cracks ($90^{\circ}$ to the horizontal) loaded indirectly under the compressive line loading. The lengths of cracks are considered as; 10 mm, 20 mm, 30 mm and 40 mm, respectively. The visually observed failure process gained through numerical Brazilian tests are found to be very similar to those obtained through the experimental tests. The fracture patterns demonstrated by DEM simulations are mostly affected by the crack separation but the tensile strength of bridge area is related to the fracture pattern and failure mechanism of the testing samples. It has also been shown that when the crack lengths are less than 30 mm, the tensile cracks may initiate from the cracks tips and propagate parallel to loading direction till coalesce with the other cracks tips while when the cracks lengths are more than 30 mm, these tensile cracks may propagate through the intact concrete itself rather than that of the bridge area.
