  • PURPOSES : Traffic accidents at intersections have been increased annually so that it is required to examine the causations to reduce the accidents. However, the current existing accident models were developed mainly with non-linear regression models such as Poisson methods. These non-linear regression methods lack to reveal complicated causations for traffic accidents, though they are right choices to study randomness and non-linearity of accidents. Therefore, to reveal the complicated causations of traffic accidents, this study used structural equation methods(SEM). METHODS : SEM used in this study is a statistical technique for estimating causal relations using a combination of statistical data and qualitative causal assumptions. SEM allow exploratory modeling, meaning they are suited to theory development. The method is tested against the obtained measurement data to determine how well the model fits the data. Among the strengths of SEM is the ability to construct latent variables: variables which are not measured directly, but are estimated in the model from several measured variables. This allows the modeler to explicitly capture the unreliability of measurement in the model, which allows the structural relations between latent variables to be accurately estimated. RESULTS : The study results showed that causal factors could be grouped into 3. Factor 1 includes traffic variables, and Factor 2 contains turning traffic variables. Factor 3 consists of other road element variables such as speed limits or signal cycles. CONCLUSIONS : Non-linear regression models can be used to develop accident predictions models. However, they lack to estimate causal factors, because they select only few significant variables to raise the accuracy of the model performance. Compared to the regressions, SEM has merits to estimate causal factors affecting accidents, because it allows the structural relations between latent variables. Therefore, this study used SEM to estimate causal factors affecting accident at urban signalized intersections.

  • This paper deals with the non-linear analysis of cantilever beams with constant volume. Numerical methods are developed for solving the elastica of cantilever ben subjected to a tip Point load and a tip couple. The linear, parabolic and sinusoidal tapers with the regular polygon cross-section are considered, whose material volume and span length are always held constant. The Runge-Kutta and Regula-Falsi methods, respectively, are used to integrate the governing differential equations and to compute the unknown value of the tip deflection. The numerical results obtained herein are shown in tables and figures. Also the shapes of strongest beams are determined by reading the minimum values form the deflection versus section ratio curves.

  • The generalized linear mixed model framework is for handling count-type categorical data as well as for clustered or overdispersed non-Gaussian data, or for non-linear model data. In this study, we review its general formulation and estimation methods, based on quasi-likelihood and Monte-Carlo techniques. The current research areas and topics for further development are also mentioned.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient image equipment implementation for the detector characteristics of various detectors by analyzing un-cooled thermal detector that exhibits nonlinear changes due to external temperature effects. First, we explain Thermal Electric Cooler for un-cooled detector temperature control system and Non-image correction methode for IR system. Second, we present the results of a study on an efficient control technique that can minimize the deterioration of image quality by controlling a un-cooled thermal detector without a thermal electric cooler(TEC) inside. Third, we suggest Image Correction Methods for Uncooled IR TECless Detector with Non-linear characteristics due to Temperature Change. So, we analyze and present the results of Image correction methods for various un-cooled thermal detector.

  • In this paper, the non-linear time-dependent closed-form, discrete and combined solutions for the post-elastic response of a geometrically and physically non-linear suspended cable to a uniformly distributed load considering the creep effects, are presented. The time-dependent closed-form method for the particularly straightforward determination of a vertical uniformly distributed load applied over the entire span of a cable and the accompanying deflection at time t corresponding to the elastic limit and/or to the elastic region, post-elastic and failure range of a suspended cable is described. The actual stress-strain properties of steel cables as well as creep of cables and their rheological characteristics are considered. In this solution, applying the Irvine's theory, the direct use of experimental data, such as the actual stress-strain and strain-time properties of high-strength steel cables, is implemented. The results obtained by the closed-form solution, i.e., a load corresponding to the elastic limit, post-elastic and failure range at time t, enable the direct use in the discrete non-linear time-dependent post-elastic analysis of a suspended cable. This initial value of load is necessary for the non-linear time-dependent elastic and post-elastic discrete analysis, concerning incremental and iterative solution strategies with tangent modulus concept. At each time step, the suspended cable is analyzed under the applied load and imposed deformations originated due to creep. This combined time-dependent approach, based on the closed-form solution and on the FEM, allows a prediction of the required load that occurs in the post-elastic region. The application of the described methods and derived equations is illustrated by numerical examples.

  • We employ a hyperbolic tangent function to construct nonlinear transformations which are useful in numerical evaluation of weakly singular integrals and Cauchy principal value integrals. Results of numerical implementation based on the standard Gauss quadrature rule show that the present transformations are available for the singular integrals and, in some cases, give much better approximations compared with those of existing non-linear transformation methods.

  • In this paper, we propose a non-linear interpolation of chrominance components based on the property of luminance signals to display color images effectively. The proposed method is more useful, in particular, for the images including stair-typed signal changes around edges. Experimental results show that the proposed method is superior to conventional methods in both objective and subjective performance.

  • The decentralized static output feedback design problem is considered. A constrained trust region method is developed that solves this optimal control problem when a complete set of state variables is not available. The considered problem is interpreted as a non-linear (non-convex) constrained matrix optimization problem. Then, a decentralized constrained trust region method is developed for this problem class exploiting the diagonal structure of the problem and using inexact computations. Finally, numerical results are given for the proposed method.

  • In this paper we consider the multiprocess dynamic normal model with parameters having a time dependent non-linear structure. We develop and study the recursive estimation procedure for the proposed model with normality assumption. It turns out thst the proposed model has nice properties such as insensitivity to outliers and quick reaction to abrupt changes of pattern.

  • In the block cipher, DPA-resistant masking methods make an appropriation of extremely high cost for the non-linear part. Block ciphers like AES and ARIA use the inversion operation as this non-linear part. This make various countermeasures be proposed for reducing the cost of masking inversion. In this paper, we propose the efficient masking inverter by rearranging the masking inversion operation over the composite field and finding duplicated multiplications.
