  • An analytical method is presented for evaluation of the steady state periodic behavior of nonlinear systems. This method is based on the substructure synthesis formulation and a MS (multiple scales) procedure, which is applied to the analysis of nonlinear responses. The proposed procedure reduces the size of large degrees-of-freedom problem in solving nonlinear equations. Feasibility and advantages of the proposed method are illustrated with the nonlinear rotating machine system as an example of large mechanical structure systems. In addition, its efficiency for nonlinear response prediction will be shown by comparison of other conventional methods.

  • In recent years, mechanical systems such as high speed vehicles and railway trains moving on elastic beam structures have become a very important issue to consider. In this paper, a general approach, which can predict the dynamic behavior of a constrained mechanical system moving on a flexible beam structure, is proposed. Various supporting conditions for the foundation support are considered for the elastic beam structure. The elastic structure is assumed to be a non-uniform and linear Bernoulli-Euler beam with a proportional damping effect. Combined differential-algebraic equation of motion is derived using the multi-body dynamics theory and the finite element method. The proposed equations of motion can be solved numerically using the generalized coordinate partitioning method and predictor-corrector algorithm, which is an implicit multi-step integration method.

  • A general approach to the dynamic time-history analysis of the reactor core is presented in this paper as a part of the fuel assembly qualification program. Several detailed core models are set up to reflect the placement of the fuel assemblies within the core shroud. Peak horizontal responses are obtained for each model for the motions induced form earthquake. The dynamic responses such as fuel assembly deflected shapes and spacer grid impact loads are carefully investigated. Also, the sensitivity responses are obtained for the earthquake motions and the fuel assembly non-linear response characteristics are discussed.

  • The hydraulic design optimization and performance analysis of mixed-flow pumps for waterjet marine vehicle propulsion has been carried out using mean streamline analysis and three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code. In the present study, the conceptual design optimization has been formulated with a non-linear objective function to minimize the fluid dynamic losses, and then the commercial CFD code was incorporated to allow for detailed flow dynamic phenomena in the pump system. Newly designed mixed-flow model pump has been tested in the laboratory. Predicted performance curves by the CFD code agree very well with experimental data for a newly designed mixed-flow pump over the normal operating conditions. The design and prediction method presented herein can be used efficiently as a unified hydraulic design process of mired-flow pumps for waterjet marine vehicle propulsion.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze nonlinear dynamics of a tethered satellite. The coupled non-linear equations of motion are derived by using the extended Hamilton's principle with the polar coordinate system. In order to analyze the response of tethered satellite, time responses are computed by the Newmark's time integration method. We also investigate the dynamic behavior of the system and the effects of length of tether, tip mass and conveyed fluid through the tether with time variation.

  • Carbon nanotube (CNT) tips in tapping mode atomic force microscopy (AFM) enable very high-resolution imaging, measurements, and manipulation at the nanoscale. We present recent results based on experimental analysis that yield new insights into the dynamics of CNT probe tips in tapping mode AFM. Experimental measurements are presented of the frequency response and dynamic amplitude-distance data of a high-aspect-ratio multi-walled (MW) CNT tip to demonstrate the non-linear features including tip amplitude saturation preceding the dynamic buckling of the MWCNT. Surface scanning is performed using a MWCNT tip on a SiO$_2$ grating to verify the imaging instabilities associated with MWCNT buckling when used with normal control schemes in the tapping mode. Lastly, the choice of optimal setpoints for tapping mode control using CNT probe tip are discussed using the experimental results.

  • As well known, the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) is an important role in photovoltaic (PV) power systems. MPPT finds and maintains the operation of PV at the maximum power point when the irradiation and cell-temperature change. In this paper, the studied system includes a PV array, a Buck-Boost DC/DC converter, a DC/AC inverter and it is connected to the three phase power system. The solar array operates as a non-linear voltage source. The P&O algorithm with power feed-back is used to control the operating point of PV array at the maximum power point. The effects of irradiation and cell-temperature on the dynamic responses are also considered.

  • To retrieve Sea Surface Temperature(SST) from NOAA-AVHRR imagery the spilt window atmospheric correction algorithm is generally used. Recently, there have been various new algorithms developed to process these data, namely the variable-coefficient split-window, the R54 transmittance-ratio method, fixed-coefficient nonlinear algorithm, dynamic water vapour (DWV) correction method, Dynamic Water Vapour and Temperature algorithm (DWVT). We used MCSST (Multi-Channel Sea surface temperature) and NLSST(Non linear sea surface temperature) algorithms in this study. The study area is around the Korea sea area (Yellow Sea). We compared and analyzed with various methods by applying each Ocean in-situ data and satellite data. The primary aim of study is to verify and optimize algorithms. Finally, this study proposes an optimized algorithm for SST retrieval.

  • Silicon oil in viscous fluid damper has a viscoelastic feature that show stiffness besides damping. These properties depend on frequency and are non-linear. A lot of research has been conducted in order to identify viscoelastic damper with mathematical model. Fractional Derivative Maxwell Model has been widely used, but this model did not explain the effect of damper size change on the damper performance. In this paper, the experimental study was conducted to validate damper's dynamic behaviors when total damper's size is changed while maintaining same aspect ratio and orifice size.

  • It is very difficult to analyze the dynamic characteristic because railway vehicle is a very complex system which are connected various mass element with railway vehicle system. To realize and analyze actual phenomenon has restriction that usual commercial software calculates creep force under creep theory about wheel-rail contact mechanism as basic analyzing, and approach about contact point are based on two dimensional non-linear contact theory and simplified Hertzian contact which considers just displacement change on the YZ plain. Therefore, to solve these problems there should be a new approach difference with existing one. In this research, a new algorithm for finding wheel-rail contact position, calculation method of contact force and applied force will be presented.
