The purpose of this study is to develop a non-invasive blood glucose measurement method by a portable near infrared (NIR) system which was newly integrated by our lab. The portable NIR system includes a tungsten halogen lamp, a specialized reflectance fiber optic probe and a photo diode array type InGaAs detector; which was developed by a microchip technology based on the lithography. Reflectance NIR spectra of different parts of human body (finger tip, earlobe, and inner lip) were recorded by using a fiber optic probe. The spectra were collected over the spectral range 1100 ∼ 1740 nm. Partial least squares regression (PLSR) was applied for the calibration and validation for the determination of blood glucose. The calibration model from earlobe spectra presented better results, showing good correlation with a glucose oxidase method which is a mostly used standard method. This model predicted the glucose concentration for validation set with a SEP of 33 mg/dL. This study indicated the feasibility for non-invasive monitoring of blood glucose by a portable near infrared system.

This paper proposes a computer-aided diagnostic algorithm in a non-invasive way. Currently, clinical diagnosis of jaundice is performed through blood sampling. Unlike the old methods, the non-invasive method will enable parents to measure newborns' jaundice by only using their mobile phones. The proposed algorithm enables high accuracy and quick diagnosis through machine learning. In here, we used the SVM model of machine learning that learned the feature extracted through image preprocessing and we used the international jaundice research data as the test data set. As a result of applying our developed algorithm, it took about 5 seconds to diagnose jaundice and it showed a 93.4% prediction accuracy. The software is real-time diagnosed and it minimizes the infant's pain by non-invasive method and parents can easily and temporarily diagnose newborns' jaundice. In the future, we aim to use the jaundice photograph of the newborn babies' data as our test data set for more accurate results.
Sleep disorders, increasingly prevalent in the general population, induce impairment in daytime functioning and other clinical problems. As changes in cortical excitability have been reported as potential pathophysiological mechanisms underlying sleep disorders, multiple studies have explored clinical effects of modulating cortical excitability through non-invasive brain stimulation in treating sleep disorders. In this study, we critically reviewed clinical studies using non-invasive brain stimulation, particularly transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), for treatment of sleep disorders. Previous studies have reported inconsistent therapeutic effects of TMS and tDCS for various kinds of sleep disorders. Specifically, low-frequency repetitive TMS (rTMS) and cathodal tDCS, both of which exert an inhibitory effect on cortical excitability, have shown inconsistent therapeutic effects for insomnia. On the other hand, high-frequency rTMS and anodal tDCS, both of which facilitate cortical excitability, have improved the symptoms of hypersomnia. In studies of restless legs syndrome, high-frequency rTMS and anodal tDCS induced inconsistent therapeutic effects. Single TMS and rTMS have shown differential therapeutic effects for obstructive sleep apnea. These inconsistent findings indicate that the distinctive characteristics of each non-invasive brain stimulation method and specific pathophysiological mechanisms underlying particular sleep disorders should be considered in an integrated manner for treatment of various sleep disorders. Future studies are needed to provide optimized TMS and tDCS protocols for each sleep disorder, considering distinctive effects of non-invasive brain stimulation and pathophysiology of each sleep disorder.
Streptococus pneumoniae is an important cause of invasive infections as well as non-invasive infections such as acute otitis media and sinusitis both in children and adults. Resistance of S. pneumoniae to multiple antimicrobials is increasing and poses therapeutic challenges, and prevention became more important. 23-valent polysaccharide vaccine has been used for the last several decades, but is not effective in children <2 years of age, the highest risk group of invasive diseases. Recently, a 7-valent pneumococcal protein conjugate vaccine(PCV) which is effective in infants and young children has been developed. The efficacy of PCVs against invasive pneumococcal disease and pneumonia is well established and is documented in several well-conducted studies. However, the effect of PCVs on otitis media is less obvious and more complex. PCVs clearly reduce diseases caused by vaccine-type(VT) pneumococci, but replacement of VT serotypes by non-VT serotypes in nasopharyngeal carriage of S. pneumoniae is responsible for the increase in acute otitis media caused by non-VT serotypes. Three years after introduction of PCV in the US, some increase of invasive infections with serotype 19A possibly due to serotype switching within certain vaccine type strains has been noted. Since most antibiotic-resistance in S. pneumoniae is confined to VT serotypes, vaccine use also reduces antibiotic resistance. With development of PCV, there was a great advance in the prevention of pneumococcal diseases, but replacement with potential virulent organisms and development of antibiotic resistance in non-VT pneumococci is a possibility that needs careful monitoring.
Background: To address the lack of evidence supporting invasion by three invasive plant species (Imperata cylindrica, Lantana camara, and Chromolaena odorata) in tropical ecosystems, we compared the ecophysiological and leaf anatomical traits of these three invasive alien species with those of species native to Sempu Island, Indonesia. Data on four plant traits were obtained from the TRY Plant Trait Database, and leaf anatomical traits were measured using transverse leaf sections. Results: Two ecophysiological traits including specific leaf area (SLA) and seed dry weight showed significant association with plant invasion in the Sempu Island Nature Reserve. Invasive species showed higher SLA and lower seed dry weight than non-invasive species. Moreover, invasive species showed superior leaf anatomical traits including sclerenchymatous tissue thickness, vascular bundle area, chlorophyll content, and bundle sheath area. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed that leaf anatomical traits strongly influenced with cumulative variances (100% in grass and 88.92% in shrubs), where I. cylindrica and C. odorata outperformed non-invasive species in these traits. Conclusions: These data suggest that the traits studied are important for plant invasiveness since ecophysiological traits influence of light capture, plant growth, and reproduction while leaf anatomical traits affect herbivory, photosynthetic assimilate transport, and photosynthetic activity.

Cystitis and proctitis are defined as inflammation of bladder and rectum respectively. Haemorrhagic cystitis is the most severe clinical manifestation of radiation and chemical cystitis. Radiation proctitis and cystitis are major complications following radiotherapy. Prevention of radiation-induced haemorrhagic cystitis has been investigated using various oral agents with minimal benefit. Bladder irrigation remains the most frequently adopted modality followed by intra-vesical instillation of alum or formalin. In intractable cases, surgical intervention is required in the form of diversion ureterostomy or cystectomy. Proctitis is more common in even low dose ranges but is self-limiting and improves on treatment interruption. However, treatment of radiation proctitis is broadly non-invasive or invasive. Non-invasive treatment consists of non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), anti-oxidants, sucralfate, short chain fatty acids and hyperbaric oxygen. Invasive treatment consists of ablative procedures like formalin application, endoscopic YAG laser coagulation or argon plasma coagulation and surgery as a last resort.
Background: Traditional wildlife monitoring has often relied on invasive techniques posing risks to species and demanding substantial resources. To address this, camera traps emerged as non-invasive alternatives, albeit primarily tailored for larger mammals, posing limitations for small mammal research. Thus, the Mostela, an innovative tool designed to overcome these challenges, was introduced to monitor small mammals in South Korea. Results: The Mostela was deployed at two study sites in South Korea, yielding compelling evidence of its efficiency in capturing small mammal species. By analyzing the collected data, we calculated the relative abundance of each species and elucidated their activity patterns. Conclusions: In summary, the Mostela system demonstrates substantial potential for advancing small mammal monitoring, offering valuable insights into diversity, community dynamics, activity patterns, and habitat preferences. Its application extends to the detection of endangered and rare species, further contributing to wildlife conservation efforts in South Korea. Consequently, the Mostela system stands as a valuable addition to the toolkit of conservationists and researchers, fostering ethical and non-invasive research practices while advancing our understanding of small mammal populations and ecosystems.

Treatment for cerebral blood flows is one of the most important treatments for cerebral infarction. There is a concern that the increasing number of cerebral blood flow treatments can cause multiple complications as it is invasive. To compensate for these problems, recently non-invasive cerebral blood flow increases have emerged. However, the current implementation of the non-invasive cerebral blood flow sensor raises the question of speed and accuracy. In this theses, the system aims to minimize the final cortical damage to the cerebrum by implementing a system in a completely different manner to complement the disadvantages of the existing non-invasive cerebral blood flow device. The system measure the PI of the limbs while simultaneously pressing limbs. Blood flow rate is carried out indirectly by increasing blood flow to peer pressure through the limbs in which the PI eips below a certain level. This can be used selectively in patients to increase blood flow.
Background: A diagnosis of H. pylori infection can be made by invasive or non-invasive methods. Several noninvasive diagnostic tests based on the detection of H. pylori stool antigen (HpSA) have been developed. The Genx H. pylori stool antigen card test is a new rapid, non-invasive test that is based on monoclonal immunochromatographic assay. The aim of this study was to determine its sensitivity, specificity, and diagnostic accuracy for diagnosing H. pylori infection in adult patients. Materials and Methods: A total of 162 patients were included in the study. A gastric biopsy was collected for histopathology and rapid urease testing. Stool specimens for HpSA testing were also collected. Patients were considered H. pylori positive if two invasive tests (histological and rapid urease tests) were positive. Results: Using the reference test, 50.6% of the samples were positive for H. pylori infection. The Genx H. pylori antigen test was positive in 19.7% of patients. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and diagnostic accuracy of the Genx H. pylori antigen test were 51.6%, 96.0%, 88.8%, 76.1%, and 79.0%, respectively. Conclusions: The Genx H. pylori stool antigen card test is a new non-invasive method that is fast and simple to perform but provides less reliable results.

Local treatment for tumors has developed from extended radical surgery to function preserving surgery on the basis of modern biology. With the development of minimally invasive technique, it changed to be minimal-invasive surgery. And nowadays technical revolution made non-invasive surgery possible with appearance of several kinds of non-surgical knives such as gamma knife, cyber knife, and HIFU (high intensity focused ultrasound) knife. In this article, history, HIFU machine and treatment procedure, histological change and its mechanism, clinical applications, advantage, disadvantage, and future prospect of extracorporeal high intensity focused ultrasound therapy using HIFU knife will be reviewed.
