  • Practical deployment methods for sensor nodes are demanding as applications using sensor nodes increase. In particular, node connectivity is crucial not only for the network longevity but also for direct impacts on sensing and data collection capability. Economic requirement at building sensor networks and often limited access for sensor fields due to hostile environment force to remain at random deployment from air. However, random deployment often result in lost connection problem and inefficient network topology issue due to node irregularity. In this paper, mixed deployment of key nodes that have better communication capability is proposed to support the original deployment into working in an efficient way. Node irregularity is improved by introducing mixed nodes and an efficient mixed node density is also analyzed. Simulation results show that the mixed deployment method has better performance than the existing deployment methods.

  • Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) have recently gained increased interest due to the widespread use of smart mobile devices. Group communication applications, serving for better cooperation between subsets of business members, become more significant in the context of MANETs. Multicast routing mechanisms are very useful communication techniques for such group-oriented applications. This paper deals with multicast routing problems in terms of stability and scalability, using the concept of stable core. We propose LMRSC (Lightweight Multicast Routing Based on Stable Core), a lightweight multicast routing technique for MANETs, in order to avoid periodic flooding of the source messages throughout the network, and to increase the duration of multicast routes. LMRSC establishes and maintains mesh architecture for each multicast group member by dividing the network into several zones, where each zone elects the most stable node as its core. Node residual energy and node velocity are used to calculate the node stability factor. The proposed algorithm is simulated by using NS-2 simulation, and is compared with other multicast routing mechanisms: ODMRP and PUMA. Packet delivery ratio, multicast route lifetime, and control packet overhead are used as performance metrics. These metrics are measured by gradual increase of the node mobility, the number of sources, the group size and the number of groups. The simulation performance results indicate that the proposed algorithm outperforms other mechanisms in terms of routes stability and network density.

  • In this paper, we present a novel ant-based hierarchical clustering algorithm, where ants repeatedly hop from one node to another over a weighted directed graph of k-nearest neighborhood obtained from a given dataset. We introduce a notion of node pheromone, which is the summation of amount of pheromone on incoming arcs to a node. The node pheromone can be regarded as a relative density measure in a local region. After a finite number of ants' hopping, we remove nodes with a small amount of node pheromone from the directed graph, and obtain a group of strongly connected components as clusters. We iteratively do this removing process from a low value of threshold to a high value, yielding a hierarchy of clusters. We demonstrate the performance of the proposed algorithm with synthetic and real data sets, comparing with traditional clustering methods. Experimental results show the superiority of the proposed method to the traditional methods.

  • In wireless sensor networks, the geographical positioning scheme is one of core technologies for sensor applications such as disaster monitoring and environment monitoring. For this reason, studies on range-free positioning schemes have been actively progressing. The density probability scheme based on central limit theorem and normal distribution was proposed to improve the location accuracy in non-uniform sensor network environments. The density probability scheme measures the final positions of unknown nodes by estimating distance through the sensor node communication. However, it has a problem that all of the neighboring nodes have the same 1-hop distance. In this paper, we propose an efficient sensor positioning scheme that overcomes this problem. The proposed scheme performs the second positioning step through the sensing range control after estimating the 1-hop distance of each node in order to minimize the estimation error. Our experimental results show that our proposed scheme improves the accuracy of sensor positioning by about 9% over the density probability scheme and by about 48% over the DV-HOP scheme.

  • The improved belief-propagation-based algorithms, such as normalized min-sum algorithm (NMSA) or offset min-sum algorithm (OMSA), are widely used to decode LDPC(Low-Density Parity-Check) codes because they are less computationally complex and work well even at low SNR(Signal-to-Noise Ratio). However, these algorithms work well only when an appropriate normalization factor or offset value is used. A new method that uses a CMD(Check Node Message Distribution) chart and least-square method, which has been recently proposed, has advantages on computational complexity over other approaches to get optimal coefficients. Furthermore, this method can be used to derive coefficients for each iteration. In this paper, we apply this method and propose an algorithm to derive a combination of normalization factor and offset value for a combined normalized and offset min-sum algorithm to further improve the decoding of LDPC codes. Simulations on the next-generation broadcasting standards, ATSC 3.0 LDPC codes, prove that a combined normalized and offset min-sum algorithm which takes the proposed coefficients as correction coefficients shows the best BER performance among other decoding algorithms.

  • In this paper, a new method of character recognition is proposed. It uses density information, in addition to positional and directional information generally used, to recognize a character. Four directional feature primitives are extracted from the thinning templates on the observation that the output of the templates have directional property in general. A simple and fast feature extraction scheme is possible. Features are organized from recursive nonary tree(N-tree) that corresponds to normalized character area. Each node of the N-tree has four directional features that are sum of the features of it's nine sub-nodes. Every feature primitive from the templates are added to the corresponding leaf and then summed to the upper nodes successively. Recognition can be accomplished by using appropriate feature level of N-tree. Also, effectiveness of each node's feature vector was tested by experiment. A method to implement the proposed feature vector organization algorithm into hardware is proposed as well. The third generation node, which is 4$\times$4, is used as a unit processing element to extract features, and it was implemented in hardware. As a result, we could observe that it is possible to extract feature vector for real-time processing.

  • Node cooperation during packet forwarding operations is critically important for fair resource utilization in Community Wireless Mesh Networks (CoWMNs). In a CoWMN, node cooperation is achieved by using fairness protocols specifically designed to detect and isolate malicious nodes, discourage unfair behavior, and encourage node participation in forwarding packets. In general, these protocols can be split into two groups: Incentive-based ones, which are managed centrally, and use credit allocation schemes. In contrast, reputation-based protocols that are decentralized, and rely on information exchange among neighboring nodes. Centrally managed protocols inevitably suffer from scalability problems. The decentralized, reputation-based protocols lacks in detection capability, suffer from false detections and error propagation compared to the centralized, incentive-based protocols. In this study, we present a new fairness protocol management scheme, called Hybrid FPMS that captures the superior detection capability of incentive-based fairness protocols without the scalability problems inherently expected from a centralized management scheme as a network's size and density grows. Simulation results show that Hybrid FPMS is more efficient than the current centralized approach and significantly reduces the network delays and overhead.

  • In this paper, a CLB-based CPLD low-power technology mapping algorithm consider area and delay time is proposed. To perform low power technology mapping for CPLD, a given Boolean network have to be represented to DAG. The proposed algorithm are consist of three step. In the first step, TD(Transition Density) calculation have to be performed. In the second step, the feasible clusters are generated by considering the following conditions: the number of output, the number of input and the number of OR-terms for CLB(Common Logic Block) within a CPLD. The common node cluster merging method, the node separation method, and the node duplication method are used to produce the feasible clusters. In the final step, low power technology mapping based on the CLBs is packing the feasible clusters into the several proper CLBs. The proposed algorithm is examined by using benchmarks in SIS. In the case of that the number of OR-terms is 5, the experiments results show that reduce the power consumption by 30.73% comparing with that of TEMPLA, and 17.11% comparing with that of PLAmap respectively.

  • To connect a mobile ad hoc network (MANET) with an IP network and to carryout communication, ad hoc network node needs to be configured with unique IP adress. Dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP) server autoconfigure nodes in wired networks. However, this cannot be applied to ad hoc network without introducing some changes in auto configuration mechanism, due to intrinsic properties (i.e., multi-hop, dynamic, and distributed nature) of the network. In this paper, we propose a scalable autoconfiguration scheme for MANETs with hierarchical topology consisting of leader and member nodes, by considering the global Internet connectivity with minimum overhead. In our proposed scheme, a joining node selects one of the pre-configured nodes for its duplicate address detection (DAD) operation. We reduce overhead and make our scheme scalable by eliminating the broadcast of DAD messages in the network. We also propose the group leader election algorithm, which takes into account the resources, density, and position information of a node to select a new leader. Our simulation results show that our proposed scheme is effective to reduce the overhead and is scalable. Also, it is shown that the proposed scheme provides an efficient method to heal the network after partitioning and merging by enhancing the role of bordering nodes in the group.

  • The optimal initial inclination for minimizing the variation of the Local Time of Ascending Node(LTAN) during the three year mission of the KOMPSAT is investigated. At first, the analytical equation for the inclination change by the Sun is derived and the optimal initial inclination by analytical method is derived. Then the analytically derived optimal inclination is checked by the numerical orbit propagation with including all major perturbations. Four different cases of the initial orbital elements are used for monitoring the LTAN variation of the LTAN. Therefore, a new optimal initial inclination by numerical orbit propagation for the KOMPSAT is found. In addition, the variations of the mean and osculating semi-major axis are investigated with the different atmospheric density values. The mean eccentricity vs. argument of perigee diagram for the frozen orbit is obtained.
