  • This study was done to compare nutrient intakes, anthropometric indices, and psychosocial factors related to smoking by smoking status among adolescent girls in Seoul. Subjects were high school students, and smokers were 17.6%. Nutrient intakes were analyzed by convenient method, and anthropometric measurements were done by Inbody 2.0. Psychosocial factors of smoking were examined based on the Theory of Planned Behavior : 26 attitudinal, 9 normative, and 17 control beliefs were used. Smokers smoked 5-7 cigarettes a day on average, with 1.26 pack-years of smoking, There were no significant differences in anthropometric characteristics, except fat distribution, between smoking(n=92) and nonsmoking(n=92) and nonsmoking(n=94) group. The percentage of alcohol groups. Especially, caloric intake (63.6% of RDA) were much below the recommended level. With respect to psychosocial factors, 18 out of 26 attitudinal beliefs were significantly different between smokers and nonsmokers. Smokers responded less negatively on the items of bad health effects of relax(p<0.001). In addition, smokers were more convinced of advantages of smoking (test, etc.)but responded less negatively on the disadvantages of smoking(bothering others, yellow teeth, bad breath, etc.). Smokers expressed less pressure for not smoking from siblings, friends, school seniors than nonsmokers. In addition, smokers, expressed less confidence in controlling the urge to smoker or quitting smoking in several situations, such as 'after a meal', 'feel bored', 'with friends', 'when angry' offered a cigarette by friends', 'drinking coffee or tea', 'drinking alcohol', 'seeing others smoke'(p<0.001). Smokers also felt less developing in applying specific skills for controlling the urge to smoker or quitting smoking. These findings suggest the need for developing smoking cessation programs for adolescent females, focusing on specific beliefs identified in this study.

  • In this study, the effects of smoking cessation and relative antioxidant activities on the oxidative stress were determined by using in vitro method. Thirty healthy smokers who were free of any disease and smoked more than 1 pack per day for the past 10 years participated in this study. For smoking cessation, smokers were asked to wear nicotine patch (21mg nicotine/ patch) everyday for 30 days and then to replace at the same time of the day. Smoking cessation program in conjunction with nicotine patch replacement was also conducted every week, one hour/each session, for 4 weeks. Canthaxanthin, $\beta-carotene$, and $\alpha-tocopherol$ were added into red blood cells at pre and post smoking cessation. As indicators of oxidative stress, hemoglobin degradation, lipid peroxidation, and percent hemolysis were determined at both pre and post smoking cessation. After 30 days of smoking cessation, the subjects gained an average of 5 pounds, varying 2 to 8 pounds, by suggesting that behavioral problems rather than nicotine itself are more important for gaining weight in ex-smokers. The total hemoglobin concentrations in blood were similar in pre and post smoking cessation, but smoking cessation resulted in a decrease in the percentage of methemoglobin from 0.96% to 0.85% Smoking cessation also caused to decease malondialdehyde (MDA) values ($26.7{\pm}7.8$ vs. $23.6{\pm}4.5$ (without oxidation), $179.3{\pm}21$ vs. $161.2{\pm}28$ nmol/ml (with oxidation) (p<0.05)), not percent hemolysis. Various antioxidants with smoking cessation significantly decreased MDA values(p<0.05), in contrast to marginal decrease of MDA in smoking cessation only. Three antioxidants used in this stu study were similarly effective in inhibiting MDA production, but relative effectiveness of canthaxanthin or $\alpha-tocopherol$ was greater than that of $\beta-carotene$ (p<0.05), in case of oxidation induced. The percent hemolysis was greatly decreased when antioxidants were added into the blood of ex-smokers (p<0.05) but no statistical significance in relative effectiveness of antioxidants was observed.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to compare differences on sexual satisfaction between non-smokers and smokers of Korean adult males. Method: The subjects of this study were 304 current smokers and 331 current non-smokers(stop smokers, never smokers) (58.0%). Because of the nature of the study, the participants were recruited through a home page advertisement of a brand newspaper company in Korea, and the survey was done through Internet system. The tool to measure participant's sexual satisfaction was adopted from the Arizona Sexual Experience Scale-Male. Result: Participant's age ranged from 20 to 49, mostly in their 30s-40s(96.1%). They were smoking average of 15 cigarettes per day. There were no significant difference on sexual satisfaction between current smokers and non-smokers( t=-.55, p>.05). However, there were significant difference on sexual satisfaction between ever smokers(n=481) and never smokers(n=154) (t=2.10, p<.05). There were significant differences an erectile and orgasm satisfaction according to number of cigarettes they smoked per day. 54.5% smokers who said that they have difficulty in keeping erectile state considered on smoking cessation within 30 days whereas 24.2% in those who said that keeping erectile state was easy. Conclusion: Informing about the high risk of sexual dysfunction with cigarette smoking should become a important part of smoking cessation education and for smoking adolescents.

  • The National Health Promotion Law passed in 1995 was a milestone for initiating a national health promotion program in Korea, and local governments and health related organizations are developing and providing health promotion programs for the public. The purpose of this study was to explore the effectiveness of a smoking prevention video for adolescents. There was no educational video on smoking prevention for school students in Korea. Based on funding from the National Health Promotion Fund, an educational video on smoking prevention has been developed and tested for the effectiveness. The primary subject of the video was middle school students. The result of the study has shown that there was a statistically significant difference between pre-and post test among middle school students and elementary school students. Students' knowledge on the harm of smoking has been increased after the video education. In addition, more than half of the students responded that the educational video was interesting and helpful. To reduce initiation of smoking among adolescents, both policies and school health education programs should be reinforced. Policies on tobacco should focus on demand of smokers and potential smokers. So government officials should keep monitor obedience of the law on prohibition of smoking for those under age 19. School teachers should focus on social influence of smoking for adolescents.

  • There are many different views of the opinion that smoking decreased the HDL cholesterol. So this cross-sectional study was attempted to find the influence which smoking, alcohol and weight affect HDL cholesterol. They were two groups;smoking group(409 males) and nonsmoking group(213 males). And HDL cholesterol, triglyceride, and total cholesterol of smoking group were compaired to them of nonsmoking group. Also the variables of age, relative weight, and alcohol were compaired. The HDL cholesterol of nonsmoking group was 47.2$\pm$10.1 mg/dl and the HDL cholesterol of smoking group was 45.5$\pm$10.7mg/dl. So there were no statistical difference. As smoking was increased in amount, HDL cholesterol was decreased slightly. According as the alcohol intake increases, especially only the HDL cholesterol of the moderate alcohol intake(101-200gm/week) group was significantly increased(P<0.05). As relative weight increases, HDL cholesterol were significantly decreased(P=0.007). Smoking was not statistical difference of HDL cholesterol. Moderately alcohol intake group(101-200gm/week) were increased the HDL cholesterol(P<0.05). Only relative weight was statistically decreased the HDL cholesterol(P<0.01). Multiple regression results that relative weight and alcohol were significant variable of the level of HDL cholesterol.

  • Purpose: This study investigates the level of expectancy, cognition, and work condition among smokers with respect to the smoking cessation clinics. Methods: The study participants included over 503 smokers aged 30 yr and in five districts of G city. The researcher and assistants personally visited homes and workplaces of the participants between November 20 and November 30, 2008 for the survey. Results: The subjects learned to smoke from their friends and started smoking when they were 15 out of curiosity. They smoked more than one cigarette every day. With respect to cognition, 67.5% of the subjects had no intention to utilize smoking cessation clinics, and 71.7% were unaware of their benefits. Those with a high level of cognition regarding smoking cessation clinics were generally in their 60s, married, residents in the Southern and Western Districts, service or technical workers, and hikers. The expectancy for the clinic was high among those who were married, Catholics, and golfers. Conclusions: The results suggest that smoking cessation may be achieved by increasing the level of cognition and expectancy among smokers. In this regard, providing information and implementing positive publicity campaigns targeting families, Places of worship, and workplaces may be beneficial.

  • Background: Despite anti-smoking campaigns, smoking prevalence among Thai males aged 30 or older is high, at around 50%. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between smoking and mortality in a rural Thai community. Materials and Methods: Subjects enrolled into the Khon Kaen cohort study between 1990 and 2001 were followed up for their vital status until $16^{th}$ March 2012. The death resource was from the Bureau of Policy and Strategy, Ministry of Interior, Thailand. A Cox proportional hazards model was used to analyse the association between smoking and death, controlling for age, education level and alcohol drinking, and confidence intervals were calculated using the floating risk method. Results: The study recruited 5,962 male subjects, of whom 1,396 died during a median 13.5 years of follow-up. Current smokers were more likely to die than never smokers after controlling for age, education level and alcohol drinking (HR, 95%CI: 1.41, 1.32-1.51), and the excess mortality was greatest for lung cancer (HR, 95%CI: 3.51, 2.65-4.66). However, there was no increased risk with increasing dose of tobacco, and no difference in risk between smokers of yamuan (hand-rolled cigarettes) and manufactured tobacco. Conclusion: Mortality from cancer, particularly lung cancer, and from all causes combined is dependent on smoking status among men in rural Thailand, but the relative risks are lower than have been reported from studies in high income countries, where the tobacco epidemic is more established.

  • Purpose: This study is based on an experimental research program designed to evaluate the before and after states of a control group that undertook a series of smoking prevention education sessions. Methods: The research was undertaken between June 2 and July 22, 2008. Students from two public elementary schools in Uiwang City took part in the study. 76 students from one of the schools (School 'W') were designated as the experimental group and 89 students from the other school (School 'O') were allotted to the control group. During the research period, the experimental group held 10, 40 minute discussions on the subject of smoking prevention. The control group had no such sessions and no information was given. The data was collected in 3 stages, firstly after initial study preparation, secondly after five sessions and thirdly after ten sessions. The data was analysed using the SPSS/WIN 12.0 program. Results: First, there was a presumption that the experiment group would have a greater knowledge about the effects of smoking than the control group. This was supported by the data analysis results (F=41.79, p =.000). Second it was presumed that the experiment group would have a more informed attitude to smoking than the control group. This was supported by the data analysis results (F=6.917, p =.009). Third, there was the presumption that the experiment group would have a greater knowledge of the effects of smoking after ten sessions than they would five sessions. This was supported by the data analysis results (F=56.911, p =.000, Scheffe=3rd> 2nd>1st). Fourth, the presumption held that the experimental group would have a more informed attitude to the effects of smoking after ten sessions than they did five. This was supported by the data analysis results (F=14.607, p =000, Scheffe=3rd>2nd>1st). Conclusion: The results appear to show that the elementary school students who participated in the smoking prevention sessions had an increased knowledge of the risks and had also formed a more negative attitude towards smoking. On the basis of the findings of this study, I would suggest that there are benefits in developing learner-centered smoking prevention programs and other related media. Also, smoking prevention discussions should be included in the regular curricula relating to health education.
