Rice yield and protein content have been shown to be highly variable across paddy fields. In order to characterize this spatial variability of rice within a field, two-year experiments were conducted in 2002 and 2003 in a large-scale rice field of $6,600m^2$ In year 2004, an experiment was conducted to know if variable rate treatment (VRT) of N fertilizer, that was prescribed for site-specific management at panicle initiation stage, could reduce spatial variation in yield and protein content of rice while increasing yield compared to conventional uniform N topdressing (UN, 33kg N/ha at PIS) method. VRT nitrogen prescription for each grid was calculated based on the nitrogen (N) uptake (from panicle initiation to harvest) required for target rice protein content of $6.8\%$, natural soil N supply, and recovery of top-dressed N fertilizer. The required N uptake for target rice protein content was calculated from the equations to predict rice yield and protein content from plant growth parameters at panicle initiation stage (PIS) and N uptake from PIS to harvest. This model· equations were developed from the data obtained from the previous two-year experiments. The plant growth parameters for the calculation of the required N were predicted non-destructively by canopy reflectance measurement. Soil N supply for each grid was obtained from the experiment of year 2003, and N recovery was assumed to be $60\%$ according to the previous reports. The prescribed VRT N ranged from 0 to 110kg N/ha with an average of 57kg/ha that was higher than 33 kg/ha of UN. The results showed that VRT application successfully worked not only to reduce spatial variability of rice yield and protein content but also to increase rough rice yield by 960kg/ha. The coefficient of variation (CV) for rice yield and protein content was reduced significantly to $8.1\%$ and $7.1\%$ in VRT from $14.6\%$ and $13.0\%$ in UN, respectively. And also the average protein content of milled rice in VRT showed very similar value of target protein content of $6.8\%$. In conclusion the procedure used in this paper was believed to be reliable and promising method for reducing within-field spatial variability of rice yield and protein content. However, inexpensive, reliable, and fast estimation methods of natural N supply and plant growth and nutrition status should be prepared before this method could be practically used for site-specific crop management in large-scale rice field.
Four introduced forage rape (Brassica napus) cultivars, 'Akela', 'Ramon', 'Sparta', and 'Velox' and a leading rapeseed cultivar, 'Hallayuchae' were grown at nitrogen (N) rates of 0, 100, 250, 300, 350, and 400 kg/ha to (i) select forage rape cultivars adapted best to Cheju area, and (ii) determine the optimum N rate for the best cultivars. Days from seeding to flowering across the cultivars increased 190 to 195 days as N rate increased from 0 to 400 kg/ha. Average days to flowering of six cultivars ranged from 182 to 198 days. Plant height increased as N rate increased up to 300 kg/ha and then decreased with a further increase in N rate and ranged from 159 to 174 cm among the cultivars. The optimum N rate for the greatest dry matter yield of five cultivars ranged from 222 to 258 kg/ha. Sparta showed the greatest dry matter yield (35.79 Mg/ha), followed by Akela, Hallayuchae, Velox, and Ramon. As N rate increased, crude protein content linearly increased but crude fiber content declined curvilinearly. Akela and Sparta had higher protein content than the other cultivars did. The forage cultivars had lower crude fiber content than the oilseed cultivar Hallayuchae did. Our results demonstrated that Sparta was best adapted to Cheju area and the optimum N rate for Sparta was about 220kg/ha.
The characteristics of ammonia-nitrogen (NH4+-N) adsorption by a zeolitic material synthesized from Jeju scoria using the fusion and hydrothermal method was studied. The synthetic zeolitic material (Z-SA) was identified as a Na-A zeolite by X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence analysis and scanning electron microscopy images. The adsorption of NH4+-N using Jeju scoria and different types of zeolite such as the Z-SA, natural zeolite, and commercial pure zeolite (Na-A zeolite, Z-CS) was compared. The equilibrium of NH4+-N adsorption was reached within 30 min for Z-SA and Z-CS, and after 60 min for Jeju scoria and natural zeolite. The adsorption capacity of NH4+-N increased with approaching to neutral when pH was in the range of 3-7, but decreased above 7. The removal efficiency of NH4+-N increased with increasing Z-SA dosage, however, its adsorption capacity decreased. For initial NH4+-N concentrations of 10-200 mg/L at pH 7, the adsorption rate of NH4+-N was well described by the pseudo second-order kinetic model than the pseudo first-order kinetic model. The adsorption isotherm was well fitted by the Langmuir model. The maximum uptake of NH4+-N obtained from the Langmuir model decreased in the order of Z-CS (46.8 mg/g) > Z-SA (31.3 mg/g) > natural zeolite (5.6 mg/g) > Jeju scoria (0.2 mg/g).
Effects of nitrogen applied to grown alone and in mixture with grass and legumes of forage crops on the yield of dry matter, absorptivity, and the amount of nitrogen fixation were studied using $^{15}N$ ammonium sulfate. 1. The amount of nitrogen fixation in legume was decreased in order of alfalfa > red clover > birdsfoot trefoil, and red clover gave highest soil-nitrogen dependency. 2. Fertilizer nitrogen for the yield of dry matter was highly effective only in orchardgrass, and effective at the early stages of alfalfa and birdsfoot trefoil in case of a mixed sowing. 3. Alone and mixed sewings showed the yield of dry matter in decreasing order of alfalfa > red clover > orchardgrass > birdsfoot trefoil and orchardgrass + alfalfa > orchardgrass + red clover > orchardgrass + birdsfoot trefoil, respectively. 4. The plot of with nitrogen showed greater nitrogen uptake than the plot of without-nitrogen throughout the plots. In case of grown alone, however, difference in the absorptivity of various forage crops was decreased in order of alfalfa > red clover > orchardgrass > birdsfoot trefoil. 5. Regardless of nitrogen application, nitrogen uptake amount of orchardgrass was higher in the plot of mixture then in the plot grown alone, except the with nitrogen plot of red clover grown in mixture at the ratio of 3 : 7.
The aim of this study was to evaluate on the removal effect of total nitrogen and posphorus in municipal wastewater by decreasing hydraulic retention time(HRT) from 6 hour to 4 hour on CNR process using influent as a Carbon Source. CNR(Cilium Nutrient Romoval) is the process combining $A^2$/O process with cilium media of H2L corporation. The removal efficiencies for BOD$_{5}$, T-N and T-P were 81.1%, 61.4%, 61.4%, respectively. The removal efficiency of nitrogen and posphorus were low by decreasing hydraulic retention time(HRT) from 6 hour to 4 hour on CNR process.s.
This experiment was conducted to determine Gibberellin content in tobacco leaves at different growth stages in relation to nitrogen levels applied. Some of the results obtained can be summarized as follows: 1. The content of Gibberellin showed an increasing tendency as the levels of nitrogen increased. 2. The highest content of Gibberellin was observed at 60 days after transplanting, showing much higher than those of 30 and 90 days after transplanting. 3. The content of Gibberellin at various growth stages under different nitrogen levels ranged from 0.2490 ng to 10.9308 ng per IKg of fresh leaf weight of Burley 21. 4.The kinds of Gibberellin present in tobacco leaf appeared to be Gibberellinl ,9,19 and 20.

Appropriate fertilization methods are required according to species to supply necessary nutrients to plants and prevent soil environmental contamination in nurseries. In this study, the effects of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization on the growth of Liriodendron tulipifera and soil characteristics were investigated. After 16 fertilization treatments (4 levels of nitrogen × 4 levels of phosphorus) were applied to one-year-old L. tulipifera seedlings at the Yongmun Nursery Station of the Korea Forest Service, height, root collar diameter (RCD), biomass, leaf nutrients, and soil characteristics were investigated. The height increased as the amount of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization increased, and the RCD was the highest in the ×2 treatment. Biomass growth was on average 40.0% higher for the treatment with high nitrogen fertilization compared to the low nitrogen treatment. The seedling quality index was the highest with nitrogen and phosphorus ×2 treatment. Leaf phosphorus and magnesium concentrations decreased when nitrogen fertilization was applied, and leaf potassium concentrations decreased as nitrogen fertilization increased. Soil pH and exchangeable potassium decreased as the amount of phosphorus application increased, and exchangeable magnesium decreased as the amount of nitrogen application increased and increased as the amount of phosphorus application increased. Considering the growth of L. tulipifera seedlings and changes in the soil characteristics at the nursery stage, twice the standard fertilization amount is the appropriate fertilization amount for nursery of the Yongmun Nursery Station. It is expected that this study will contribute to improving nursery soil fertilization management technology for healthy seedling production.

In order to compare the barrier properties of Ta-N/Si(001) with those of Ta-N/Ta/Si(001), we studied structural properties of films grown by RF magnetron sputtering with various $Ar/N_2$ ratios. To evaluate the barrier properties, the samples were annealed in a vacuum chamber. Ex-situ x-ray scattering measurements were done using an in-house x-ray system. With increasing nitrogen ratio in Ta-N/Si(001), the barrier property of Ta-N/Si(001) was enhanced, finally failed at $750^{\circ}C$ due to the crystallization and silicide formation. Compared with Ta-N/Si(001), Ta-N/Ta/Si(001) forms silicides at $650^{\circ}C$. However it does not crystallize even at $750^{\circ}C$. With increasing nitrogen composition in Ta-N/Ta/Si(001), the formation of tantalum silicide was reduced and the surface roughness was improved. To observe the surface morphology of Ta-N/Ta/Si(001) during annealing, we performed an in-situ x-ray scattering experiment using synchrotron radiation of the 5C2 at Pohang Light Source(PLS). Addition of Ta layer between Ta-N and Si(001) improved the surface morphology and reduced the surface degradation at high temperatures. In addition, increasing $N_2/Ar$ flow ratio reduced the formation of tantalum silicide and enhanced the barrier properties.
This study was intended to investigate the temporal and spatial variabilities of dry matter, nitrogen content, chlorophyll of paddy rice and yield caused by different rates of nitrogen application. An experimental field was divided into 45 plots of 3.48 ${\times}$ 12 m in size and application rate of nitrogen varied from 0 to 235% with an increment of 25% based on the standard rate of N-P$_2$O$_{5}$-K$_2$O=12-8-8 kg/10a. The measurements were made 8 times every 9-10 days after the transplanting. About 60 days after the transplanting, there exhibited little variabilities in the dry matter caused by different rates of nitrogen application. After that. however, there showed large variabilities and the dry matter increased with the application rate. The nitrogen content of paddy also increased with the application rate but it was inconsistent. After the tillering period, the nitrogen content remained constant. In the early stage of the tillering period the nitrogen content decreased in spite of increase in the dry matter. However. after a certain period of time it increased with the dry matter. There were little variabilities of chlorophyll after the transplanting. However, the SPAD increased with application rate of nitrogen as the paddy grew. After the tillering period SPAD was not affected by the different rates. More yield was obtained at the plots where larger nitrogen content was measured.d.
Aluminum nitride(AlN) thin films were deposited on silicon substrate by reactive RF magnetron sputtering without substrate heating. We investigated the dependence of some properties for AlN thin film on sputtering conditions such as working pressure, $N_2$ concentration and RF power. XRD, Ellipsometer and AES has been measured to find out structural properties and preferred orientation of AlN thin films. Deposition rate of AlN thin film was increased with an increase of RF power and decreased with an increase of $N_2$ concentration. AES in-depth measurements showed that stoichiometry of Aluminium and Nitrogen elements were not affected by $N_2$ concentration. It has shown that low working pressure, low $N_2$ concentration and high RF power should be maintained to deposit AlN thin film with a high degree of (0002) preferred orientation.
