  • PURPOSE. This study was performed to evaluate the osteogenic potential of 3mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (3Y-TZP) and niobium oxide containing Y-TZPs with specific ratios, new (Y,Nb)-TZPs, namely YN4533 and YN4533/Al20 discs. MATERIALS AND METHODS. 3Y-TZP, YN4533 and YN4533/Al20 discs (15 mm diameter and 1 mm thickness) were prepared and their average surface roughness ($R_a$) and surface topography were analyzed using 3-D confocal laser microscope (CLSM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Mouse pre-osteoblast MC3T3-E1 cells were seeded onto all zirconia discs and evaluated with regard to cell attachment and morphology by (CLSM), cell proliferation by PicoGreen assay, and cell differentiation by Reverse-Transcription PCR and Quantitative Real-Time PCR, and alkaline phosphatase (Alp) staining. RESULTS. The cellular morphology of MC3T3-E1 pre-osteoblasts was more stretched on a smooth surface than on a rough surface, regardless of the material. Cellular proliferation was higher on smooth surfaces, but there were no significant differences between 3Y-TZP, YN4533, and YN4533/Al20. Osteoblast differentiation patterns on YN4533 and YN4533/Al20 were similar to or slightly higher than seen in 3Y-TZP. Although there were no significant differences in bone marker gene expression (alkaline phosphatase and osteocalcin), Alp staining indicated better osteoblast differentiation on YN4533 and YN4533/Al20 compared to 3Y-TZP. CONCLUSION. Based on these results, niobium oxide containing Y-TZPs have comparable osteogenic potential to 3Y-TZP and are expected to be suitable alternative ceramics dental implant materials to titanium for aesthetically important areas.

Etherification of n-Butanol to Di-n-Butyl Ether over H3+xPW12-xNbxO40 (x=0, 1, 2, 3) Keggin and H6+xP2W18-xNbxO62 (x=0, 1, 2, 3) Wells-Dawson Heteropolyacid Catalysts (Keggin형 H3+xPW12-xNbxO40 (x=0, 1, 2, 3) 및 Wells-Dawson형 H6+xP2W18-xNbxO62 (x=0, 1, 2, 3) 헤테로폴리산 촉매를 이용한 n-Butanol로부터 Di-n-Butyl Ether의 제조)

  • Etherification of n-butanol to di-n-Butyl Ether was carried out over Keggin $H_{3+x}PW_{12-x}Nb_xO_{40}$ (x=0, 1, 2, 3) and $H_{6+x}P_2W_{18-x}Nb_xO_{62}$ (x=0, 1, 2, 3) Wells-Dawson heteropolyacid catalysts. Niobium-substituted Keggin and Wells-Dawson heteropolyacid catalysts with different niobium content were prepared. Successful preparation of the catalysts was confirmed by FT-IR, ICP-AES, and $^{31}P$ NMR analyses. Their acid properties were determined by $NH_3$-TPD (Temperature-Programmed Desorption) measurements. Heteropolyacid catalysts showed different acid properties depending on niobium content in both series. The correlation between acid properties of heteropolyacid catalysts and catalytic activity was then established. Acidity of Keggin and Wells-Dawson heteropolyacid catalysts decreased with increasing niobium content, and conversion of n-butanol and yield for di-n-butyl ether increased with increasing acidity of the catalysts, regardless of the identity of heteropolyacid catalysts (without heteropolyacid structural sensitivity). Thus, acidity of heteropolyacid catalysts served as an important factor determining the catalytic performance in the etherification of n-butanol to di-n-Butyl Ether.

  • Thermal creep properties of the zirconium tube which was developed for high burnup application were evaluated. The creep test of cladding tubes after various final heat treatment was carried out by the internal pressurization method in the temperature range from $350^{\circ}C to 400^{\circ}C$ and from 100 to 150 MPa in the hoop stress. Creep tests were lasted up to 900days, which showed the steady-state secondary creep rate. The creep resistance of zirconium claddings was higher than that of Zircaloy-4. Factors that affect creep resistance, such as final annealing temperature, applied stress and alloying element were discussed. Tin as an alloying element was more effective than niobium due to solute hardening effect of tin. In case of advanced claddings, the optimization of final heat treatment temperature as well as alloying element causes a great influence on the improvement of creep resistance.

  • Statement of problem. Mechanisms of tissue-implant interaction and the effect of the implant surface on the behavior of cells has not yet been clarified. Purpose. This study was performed to investigate the tissue reaction to the titanium alloy submerged into rat peritoneum in vivo. Materials and methods. Titanium alloys (titanium-13Zirconium-6Niobium) were inserted inside the peritoneal cavity of Sprague Dawley rats. After 3 months, the tissue formed around the inserted titanium alloys were examined with a light-microscope. Tissue reaction around the material was analyzed by confocal microscopy to evaluate their biocompatibility in a living body. Results. In in vivo study, foreign body type multinucleated giant cells were found in the fibrous tissue formed as a reaction to the foreign material (4 in 20 cases), but the inflammatory reaction was very weak. After experiment, the contaminants of biomaterials was removed from living tissue. In confocal microscopy, we observed that the staining of vinculin and actin showed mixed appearance. In a few cases, we found that the staining of vinculin and beta-catenin showed the prominent appearance. Conclusion. We found that titanium-13Zirconium-6Niobium alloy was an excellent biomaterial.

  • Superconducting proximity effects of Nb/Si(111) were investigated with scanning tunneling microscopy(STM) and scanning tunneling spectroscopy(STS). A highly-doped($0.002\;{\omega}{\diamondsuit}cm$) Si wafer pieces were used as substrate and Nb source was thermally evaporated onto the atomically clean silicon substrate. The temperature of the silicon sample was held at $600^{\circ}C$ during the niobium deposition. And the sample was annealed at $600^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes additionally. Volmer-Weber growth mode is preferred in Nb/Si(111) at the sample temperature of $600^{\circ}C$. With proper temperature and annealing time, we can obtain Nb islands of lateral size larger than Nb coherence length(~38nm). And outside of the islands, bare Si($7{\times}7$) reconstructed surface is exposed due to the Volmer-Weber Growth mode. STS measurement at 5.6K showed that Nb island have BCS-like superconducting gap of about 2mV around the Fermi level and the critical temperature is calculated to be as low as 6.1K, which is lower than that of bulk niobium, 9.5K. This reduced value of superconducting energy gap indicates suppression of superconductivity in nanostructures. Moreover, the superconducting state is extended out of the Nb island, over to bare Si surface, due to the superconducting proximity effect. Spatially-resolved scanning tunneling spectroscopy(SR-STS) data taken over the inside and outside of the niobium island shows gradually reduced superconducting gap.

  • The surface phase changes, the hardness variations, the nitrogen contents and the corrosion resistances of 17-4 PH stainless steel have been investigated after nitrogen permeation(solution nitriding) at a temperature ranges from $1050^{\circ}C$ to $1150^{\circ}C$ The phases appeared at the nitrogen-permeated surface layer were shown to martensite plus austenite and austenite, depending on the variation of nitrogen and chromium contents. And the surface hardness was also depended on the phases appeared at the surface layer from 370 Hv to 220 Hv. The precipitates exhibited at the nitrogen-permeated surface layer were niobium nitride, niobium chromium nitride and carbo-nitride in the austenite and martensite matrices. The surface nitrogen contents were followed by the Cr contents of the surface layers, representing 0.55% at the temperatures of $1050^{\circ}C$ and $1150^{\circ}C$ respectively, and 0.96% at $1100^{\circ}C$ at the distances of $60{\mu}m$ from the outmost surface. From the comparison of the corrosion resistances between nitrogen-permeated and solution-annealed steels, nitrogen permeation remarkably improved the corrosion resistance in the solution of 1 N $H_2SO_4$ due to the increase of nitrogen content in the surface austenite phase.

  • Advanced radiation applications have been widely used and extended to many fields. As a result of this fact, choosing an appropriate shielding material based on the radiation application has become vital. In this regard, the integration of elements into polymer composites has been investigated and contributed to the quantity and quality of radiation shielding materials. This study reports photon attenuation parameters and electromagnetic shielding effectiveness of a novel polymer composite prepared with a matrix reinforced with three different proportions (5, 10, and 15 wt%) of niobium content. Addition of Nb dopant improves both photon attenuation and electromagnetic shielding effectiveness for the investigated composites. Therefore, Nb(15%) polymer composite with highest concentration has been found to be the best absorber for ionizing and non-ionizing radiations. Consequently, the performed analyzes provide evidences that the prepared Nb-reinforced polymer composite could be effectively used as photon radiation attenuator and electromagnetic shielding material.
