  • Recently, newspapers as well as web documents include many newly coined words such as "mid"(meaning "American drama" since "mi" means "America" in Korean and "d" refers to the "d" of drama) and "anseup"(meaning "pathetic" since "an" and "seup" literally mean eyeballs and moist respectively). However, these words cause a Korean analyzing system's performance to decrease. In order to recognize these unknown word automatically, this paper propose a step-by-step approach consisting of an unknown noun recognition phase based on full text analysis, an unknown verb recognition phase based on web document frequency, and an unknown noun recognition phase based on web document frequency. The proposed approach includes the phase based on full text analysis to recognize accurately the unknown words occurred once and again in a document. Also, the proposed approach includes two phases based on web document frequency to recognize broadly the unknown words occurred once in the document. Besides, the proposed model divides between an unknown noun recognition phase and an unknown verb recognition phase to recognize various unknown words. Experimental results shows that the proposed approach improves precision 1.01% and recall 8.50% as compared with a previous approach.

  • The goal of this study is to examine whether the genre characteristics of newspaper articles are appropriately reflected in Korean language textbooks. For the purpose of this study, two corpora were built with 17 textbook articles and 60 newspaper articles respectively. The average sentence length and frequency of vocabulary in each corpus were measured. It was found that the sentences of articles in textbooks tended to have longer sentence length and more complicated structures than the articles in newspapers. For instance, sentences in the textbook articles had more verbal endings, such as conjunctive and transforming endings. On the other hand, in case of vocabulary representing 'timeliness', there was a high frequency of adverbs and nouns which were related to year, month, and time in actual articles, while it is found to be very limited in textbooks. Also, typical translative styles such as '-ko itta', '-e ttareumyun' were more prominent in textbooks than in newspaper articles. In the case of abbreviated and omitted form of particles, this was a characteristic that appeared only in actual articles because of the constraint of space. It is significant that this paper offers suggestions for the development of reading materials for Korean language education by revealing that the genre typology of actual newspaper articles is not adequately reflected in current textbooks.

Five themes were derived from the data analysis. In the newspaper, in general, professional nurses were described as patient-centered nursing provider with sense of calling for nursing. Also their positive portrayals as health professionals have noticeably emerged. Yet in contrast, nurses' negative portrayals as neglectful, lazy, and discriminating against the poor have been reported. The study findings indicate significantly enhanced nursing professionalism and nursing as a future-promising occupation. The results can be used to develop strategies to improve nursing public image in the media. For further exploratory study on the subscriber's image of nurses after reading the articles is needed.

  • This study develops and validates an objective scale to measure newspaper use at home by elementary school students and parents. We developed a preliminary scale of 59 items through the review of literature on newspaper use and mediation as well as the examination of content validity by education experts. Collected data were analyzed using SPSS 21.0 and AMOS 21.0 programs. A total of 42 items were supported by 703 parents with students in grades 1-6 using exploratory factor analysis. The model included 3 categories and 9 sub-factors: instruction (modeling, restriction, and text instruction), activities (play activity, conversation, online mediation, and scrap activity), and belief (academic achievement and information acquisition). Confirmatory factor analysis confirmed and validated the model fit; in addition, convergent validity, and discriminant validity, and cross validity was confirmed through correlation analysis by gender comparison and grade comparison. We also verified the validity of this scale through correlation analysis based on Yu and Jung (2012)'s newspaper mediation variables and scale in regards to children's motivation for using newspapers. Finally, internal consistency reliability and half reliability were also confirmed. In conclusion, the suitability and stability of home newspaper utilization scale for elementary students (HNUS-E) were confirmed. This scale provides parents and educators with ideas for the development of the children's literacy, cognitive, and affective domains that can be effectively used in research on newspaper use for school-aged children.

The design collection analysis was conducted from 2016 F/W to 2020 F/W, when Demna Gvasalia commenced responsibility for the Balenciaga collection. A total of 12 articles from overseas fashion magazines and newspapers were analyzed. A modern reinterpretation of Demna Gvasalia's Balenciaga design is as follows. First, he introduced luxury mode to reflect a sense of the times and introduced luxury street looks based on street and sports sensibilities, showing various styles without specific concepts. Second, by sharing universal sensibilities based on pragmatism, he proposed an easy-to-wear outfit for daily life to demonstrate the everydayness of fashion. Third, as a new exploration of traditional structural beauty, the design of Cristobal Balenciaga was reinterpreted through the conversion of items, overlapping outfits, and the introduction of high-tech technologies. Fourth, by taking a conceptual approach to fashion, he has renewed the spirit of experimentation and modernity shown by Cristobal Balenciaga. Fifth, with the presentation of a new icon, new styles of sneakers such as Triple S and Speed Runner are presented as new icons. He inherited the original mindset and creative approach of the house's founder, Cristobal Balenciaga, and reinterpreted it from a contemporary street sensibility and pragmatic perspective.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore and analyze how the Covid-19 pandemic has affected the reporting practices and news production of the reporters working with Korean media over the past one year. To this end, this study has conducted in-depth interviews with reporters working with daily newspapers, news agencies, and broadcasting companies. The analysis of the interviews resulted in the following generalizations. The reporters are working at home, which was never experienced before the Covid-19 pandemic, and they have difficulties in covering their reporting beats because they have little or no access to contact points. The reporters rely heavily on indirect coverage and online briefings via phones or SNS because they have difficulties in meeting news sources in person. As a result, the diversity of news contents and the media's on-site monitoring functions has been severely weakened. In addition, the reporters have no chances to both exchange ideas with fellow reporters and to transfer the know-how of collecting news items to their juniors. This paper has also discussed the disruption of practices that the ongoing Covid-19 has brought to the media ecosystem from a variety of perspectives.

  • The study examines how the discourse on infants' smart media use has been constructed under media-saturated situations. Infants' use of smart media has been regarded as a dangerous activity, rate of overdependence has been increasing. Newspapers during the recent three years (2018-20) were analyzed. The most prominent speakers in the news field were smart media content producers and platform operators. There were negative views and concerns about infants' smart media use by academics, civic groups, and parents. However, the industry went beyond these risk discourses and gave positive meaning: Smart media was redefined as safe media for infants and reliable childcare helpers for parents. Parents were portrayed as those responsible for their children's media use and in need of help for childcare, rather than being blamed for their children's overdependence on smart media. Digital parenting seems to be emerging as an acceptable and practicable way of childcare rather than harmful and incomplete parenting.

  • Recently, the boundaries between people who produce and consume digital contents disappears due to the massive developments in information and communications technology (ICT) and the rapidly increasing spread of smartphones unlike in the traditional mass media (e.g., newspapers, radios, and TVs). Through the open service platform, the problem perception for each individual remains the same, but the problem solving methods varies as the service types have been diversified. The creation of added value through the growth of the new media platform industry is expected to enrich our lives, but it can also cause severe social side effects. For example, communication problems between social classes due to the information gap have led to generational conflict, and if such problems persist, it can cause national and social losses. Therefore, this paper analyzes the policy efforts to resolve the information gap and the necessity of the legalization of multimedia literary education to maximize the synergy effect through psychological model.
