  • We report one newly recorded species Warreniplema fumicosta (Warren) for the first time in Korea. In July, a single female specimen of Warreniplema fumicosta was collected at a high altitude on Mount Jirisan. This species can be distinguished by the light blackish forewing with the largely undulating ante- and postmedial lines, and the bicolorous hindwing with yellowish upper half dark brown lower half, and dark brown ante- and postmedial lines. So far, there have been 13 species belonging to seven genera of the Epipleminae subfamily that have been documented, and this includes W. fumicosta.

  • Previously, 33 species, 18 genera, eight subfamilies of the family Tineidae were reported in Korea. In this study detail a new record to Korea, species, Micrerethista denticulata Davis, 1998 in the subfamily Harmacloninae in Korea. This species is the most widespread species of the genus in southern Asia, ranging from Thailand through Indonesia to southern Japan but absent from New Guinea. Globally, Harmacloninae Davis, 1998 includes 22 species of two genera. The subfamily can be distinguished from the other Tineidae subfamilies by an additional wing locking mechanism, loss of pretarsal arolium and pseudempodial seta, tympanic organ in abdominal sternum II, enlargement of sternal apophyses, and aedeagus with basal midventral keel in male genitalia. The morphological characteristics of this subfamily and species are described, and illustrations of examined species and the key characters for each subfamilies of the family Tineidae from Korea are provided.

  • Herein, we report a new record of Arna bipunctapex (Hampson) and a new species, Euproctis fulvatus sp. nov. in Korea; both are Lymantriine moths. Arna bipunctapex is distinguished by a relatively large wingspan with two black dots and a small dot between these black dots in the apical region of a yellowish forewing. The male genitalia of A. bipunctapex can be distinguished by the lack of a process on the sacculus of valva while the female genitalia can be distinguished by an antrum that is basally flat with two lateral digitate arms. Euproctis fulvatus is distinguished by yellowish wings with a medially curved central fascia of the forewing. The male genitalia can be distinguished by the bifid, digitate uncus and the simple, square-shaped valva with a distal strong invaginated margin. The female genitalia can be distinguished by the long, medially twisted, ductus dursae with simple antrum posteriorly strongly sclerotized and ovate corpus bursae without signum. Larvae of E. fulvatus are distinguished by a black head with a pair of long, black, lateral tufts, dorsum with 10-11 white intersegmental dots and bright red setal warts on T2-A8, and bright red glands on A6 and A7.

  • Neoporphyra kitoi Ma. Abe, N. Kikuchi, Tamaki, Tom. Sato, Murase, Fujiyoshi & Mas. Kobayashi has been known as an endemic species in Japan. Its high temperature tolerance suggests that it could be advantageous for cultivation. In this study, we collected it from the Ulleungdo island, Korea and transferred it into Pyropia for a new combination, identified as Pyropia kitoi(Ma. Abe, N. Kikuchi, Tamaki, Tom. Sato, Murase, Fujiyoshi & Mas. Kobayashi) D.J. Kim, T.O. Cho & B.Y. Won comb. nov. based on morphological and molecular analyses. Pyropia kitoi is also reported as a new record species in the list of Korean macroalgal flora. Although we didn't observe the emergence of new blades from the rhizoidal cells, which is a key character for this species, our molecular analysis of rbcL revealed that our samples from Korea were congruent with "Neoporphyra kitoi" from Japan and were nested within the clade of Pyropia. The gene sequence divergence between the Korean and Japanese samples was 0-0.2%.

  • A taxonomic study of Peltigera in South Korea was performed. The phylogenetic analysis based on nr DNA internal transcribed spacer sequences suggests that Peltigera is a well-supported monophyletic group. Important characteristics are the phycobiont type of thallus and the vein type at the lower cortex (wide and flat, or narrow and ridged). The vertical or horizontal arrangement of the apothecia is also important in distinguishing species in this genus. Eleven species of Peltigera were revealed and confirmed, which included one new record, P. elisabethae. A description of each species is presented with morphological, anatomic, and chemical characteristics, and comparisons between similar species are made. A key to the species is also presented.

  • Tong-il, the high-yielding rice variety bred on early 1970, effected a turning point in modern rice production in Korea. As rice production reached the highest record yield in 1978 with HYV, Korea achieved self-sufficiency in domestic supply of rice (or the first time in (her own) history, HYV required high input of fertilizers and pesticides for proving its yielding ability and needed new techniques such as early nursery-planting to prevent chilling damage. But, farm economy did not follow the successful achievement of rice production because of increased farming cost and inflation.'Tong-il variety has been replaced by new high-yielding Japonica varieties from 1980 when record-low-temperature during summer months had persisted. Also, the cooked rice of Tong-il variety did not agree with the appetite of Korean people. Though the hectarage of Tong-il rice did reduce, farmers applied the same high-input cultural techniques for new Japonica cultivars as did for Tong-il variety. Heavy application of nitrogen fertilizer contaminated surface and ground water with nitrate ions while phosphorous fertilizer was blamed for algae pollution. Frequent spray of pesticide and herbicide reduced significantly the biotic population in paddy ecosystems including insects and soil microorganisms. The new technologies of the 21st century must be directed to produce safe food, to save natural resources, and to preserve a clean environment for human welfare. We need low-input sustainable farming techniques to provide high-yielding crops and to preserve a healthy ecosystem.
