Since the 1960s when paper began to use as a structural material in furniture, design, the way of using paper was dramatically changed. Before the 1960s, paper was used mostly in decorative purposes like paper $mach\acute{e}$. The development of consumer culture in the 1960s created a new trend for paper in design. Paper became a material for dresses and chairs. Also, the types of paper that adapted on furniture varies from cardboard, paper tubes, glassine paper, honeycomb, etc. The variation of the material results to make possible to create a new form. Moreover, paperboard was broadly used in current society in such area that mostly structural based as architecture. Paper gives great opportunity not only to consumers to buy furniture in inexpensive price also to manufacturers to produce furniture and to test market easily, Moreover, paper furniture is mostly fun. Therefore, the creation of paper furniture becomes diverse in terms of design concept. This study explored the characteristics of paper furniture responding to social backgrounds by decade. Relation between types of paper and the characteristics is one of main points in this research. This study covers furniture design from the 1960s to present and mostly focuses on seating furniture where paper used as structural material. Researching on patent records and contemporary periodicals gave me helpful information on details of design process and consumer culture.

In the latest furniture design field, we can find mass production with concept of heterogeneity that is made by harmonizing existing object with other object, which has new value. In order to follow the trend in the reality, various design process method that applied concept of Hybrid is attempted by flexibly combining or changing heterogeneous materials, formations or functions such as combination of new material and wood or IT. However, not like other design fields, its research range in furniture design is limited. This study is conducted in order to overcome and supplement problems that are made when these different materials are combined, such as faults or cracks made due to difference of expansion and contraction coefficient, lack of intensity and change of formation due to external temperature and humidity. Panels that are combined for this study were verified materials that have passed environmental adaptation test throughout the period of 1 year and 2 months, which will be made into a table. By doing this, this study will be an empirical study that establish concept of furniture made with acrylic and provides manufacturing method of combining wood and acrylic. Finally it proposed a new furniture design method that follows the trend by researching new materials with the new concept.

Shake and gnarl in the timber market are considered as a defect of reducing the quality of timber. However, this study expects that shake and gnarl are the optimum design tools to improve aesthetics of furniture if their unique form is properly used as formative expression factors of wooden furniture. This study is conducted to suggest methods in order for consumers and designers to consider shake and gnarl as new formative factors and apply them to wooden furniture designs. The study conducts a preference survey of general people by manufacturing furniture that has or doesn't have shake and gnarl, and measures the level of aesthetics after providing furniture design majors with furniture image that reprocesses shake and gnarl in a new way. According to the findings, shake and gnarl have latent aesthetic values, which verifies that various methods can be used to improve aesthetics of wooden furniture by means of a case study. By applying hidden authentic value of the verified shake and gnarl to furniture design, various improvement methods of aesthetics will have to be actively studied.

This study intends to analyze the importance of design on the basis of the children' emotion, by instancing the child-oriented furniture that contributes to the healthy growing and emotion-development of children. This means the reflection of the will trying to see the main point of design for the child-oriented furniture and it's possibility from another new standpoint. It will be understood how far the furniture influences the children and for that the furniture among others for the preschool children having playing & leaning functions is taken as an object of the study. The scope of study is the child-oriented furniture having playing & learning functions that has been presented for displaying as well as for a commercial use, since 2005. The attempt to find objective factors working positively for the emotion- & behavior development of children through seeking a new design of the child-oriented furniture for playing & learning is for emphasizing the importance of the emotional function, not only the primary function of furniture, at designing the child-oriented furniture. The combination between applications of the specialized material for child education & studies, therefore, has to be handled more importantly. The child-oriented furniture for playing & leaning that stimulates a healthy growing of child not only physically, also emotionally should be constantly and more deeply specialized on child education and design aspects.

Today, furniture design, which is changing and diversified, a movement to search a new formative world while reviving our traditionality is continuously proceeded, that implies a new possibility in our culture. In respect of such diversified materials, Korean traditional paper, Hanji (韓紙), has already been acknowledged with its excellence. Also, Hanji is a material that fully contains aesthetic consciousness of Korean people, accordingly, this research investigated and analyzed mainly with Sarangbang furniture among Joseon antique furniture, in order to study the possibility of Hanji decorated furniture as the objet in our interior space. This research utilized Paper cut technique (剪紙技法) among Hanji Crafts technique of expressive elements of Sarangbang furniture using Hanji, which is to make patterns and attach them by cutting out or engraving colored papers using scissors or graver to the wooden frame (白骨). Through this, this research could investigate production process utilizing Paper cut technique, also, Sarangbang furniture utilizing such Paper cut could be settled down as the objet with functional aspect and aesthetic completion in our interior space. Also, the researcher presents value of our original furniture by suggesting final output and considers that systematic researches should be conducted continuously on furniture henceforth utilizing Paper cut technique.

Since the onset of the 21st century, digital technology has been widely adopted in various fields of art; it has enabled artists or designers to try diverse and brand-new ways of expression in literally every possible field of art, including painting, sculpture, and other design work. Furniture design is no exception. From the initial design step to the final production of furniture, modern digital skills are broadly utilized, creating a whole new set of designs that would otherwise be hardly conceivable and realizing a highly efficient furniture-making mechanism. More recently, the 3D printing technique, which is called a 21st century alchemy, has been successfully commercialized and is getting more popular, heralding yet another innovative shift in the area of furniture design and production. In this context, this study discusses the background of the furniture design using digital technology, and identifies the correlations between the modern digital technology and furniture design by redefining the concept of such digital technology. By reviewing multiple real-life cases, some of the key digital expressions found in modern furniture design are also analyzed. This study aims at suggesting the reason why digital technology is significant and promising in diverse ways for the development of modern furniture design.

The culture of Korea shows political and religious discrimination by changed the era, but in the culture the inherent spirit of Koreans has been more specific at various angles to. But in the last several decades looking at the domestic furniture design field, the introduction of Western technology with high-tech, the mechanical plastics of modern Western European furniture, and imitations have been flooded. Owing to them our spirit were soon altered and made to face the current leads to confusion. Fortunately, in the latest national and international design fair the domestic furniture companies are breaking the ambiguous identity of the design in the meantime they keep studying and developing of our spirit and the demands of the times. Moreover, a new awareness and heightened interest on Korean traditional and stylish furniture are more elevated. At this moment, a study on the Connectivity of Aesthetic Consciousness Appearing in Korean Traditional Architecture and Furniture is required to overcome the today's confusion and to establish identity and the direction of the domestic furniture industry. Thus, this paper purposes to present the new direction for domestic furniture industry by researching and analyzing on the Korean traditional architecture and traditional furniture with the Korean spirit and a sense of beauty.

This study aimed at developing furniture for children by Ilgumte which is an expert manufacturer of educational equipments for school and kindergarten and the aim of this investigation is to develop the child-oriented furniture in consideration of Ilgumte's characteristic as a company composed of the disabled people, and furthermore to create a new sales market by developing own technology to improve competitive power. The current status of the child furniture in domestic and international market was researched and design concept on basis of this analysis was set, and through the designing process the new items of furniture having characteristics as follows were developed. First, the simple production way for the disabled to be able to work was selected and plywood used mainly by Ilgumte was presented as main material. Second, moving course, space and storage function were maximum considered, so that children feel convenient at using the furniture in their space, in case of playing as well as leaning. Third, natural wooden texture was mostly reflected for the emotional aspects of children and pink color played a role as partial accents. Finally, difficult production skill and expensive material were excluded for cost down.

Surface materials of furnitures are continuously studied and marketed with new patterns and new technology so as to create designs and fashions but even professionals are also difficult in distinguishing natural materials from artificial materials. Like this, furniture industry is required for rapid coping with the preference of customers which requires high grade of consumption pattern and is rapidly changed; it is intended to review the current situation of our furniture industry. The purpose of this thesis is to activate furniture industry and elevate the importance of surface materials in assumption of continuous R&D based on systemic data analysis of the kinds and colors of surface materials used in the companies within rank five of sales volume in domestic furniture companies.

This study aimed to develop organic design and propose references on an origin and developing factors of the organic design as looking into previous researches on furniture design. Expressive features with curves observed in the furniture design have been interpreted as organic meanings, and the study also approached grounds for the organic design elements while talking about developments of new materials and digital technology. In addition, the study presented a possibility explaining that these organic design elements might have been derived and developed from Art Nouveau. State-of-the art technology of the digital era in the 21st century has been built upon more creative concepts, and as this technology gets combined with the digital technology, it is, now, changing but also improving both morphological aspects and design methodologies. In the midst of this change, when it comes to factors to develop the organic design, creation of various new materials and state-of-the art digital technology are considered to be immediate factors to changes in the design. As morphological thinking using digital media develops, geometric thinking and such form are realized which eventually would lead us to furniture design of a new concept.
