  • This study proposes a new educational approach to basic engineering education using reverse-engineering. A freshmen level engineering coursework provided by the University, 'Engineering Design', is to deliver the understanding of the general relationship between their major and its adjacent engineering fields. Students are to understand the identity of their major fields through this effort. There are some limitations, however, to achieving these educational objectives by providing lectures in a classroom environment or practical experience because of the broad nature of the subject. A new educational approach on 'Engineering Design' has been implemented for past five years to achieve this goal using reverse-engineering techniques and this paper describes it in detail.

  • Shu-gyo-ryoku, a program to enhance students' academic and career skills, was begun in the academic year 2011. Under the new program, "Career Planning" and "Career Design" were introduced as part of the liberal arts education for incoming freshmen. Approximately 500 students majoring in engineering enrolled in "Career Planning" in which they study a "curriculum map" and how it relates to their future fields of employment. The curriculum map illustrates the connections between classes and increases students'understanding of the curriculum structure. In small groups, students discussed the curriculum in order to develop sketches of their career paths. In addition, students answered a career anchor test and though several communicative activities, improved their communication skills. A portfolio system was built into the university network to record the learning history of each student. Students are able to check their learning histories and reflect on the change in themselves during their academic careers.

  • Many research papers on the college students' functional concept show they have poor understanding on this topic. To compare the results with that of Korean students, four interrelated topics are chosen: How do they understand the concept of function?; what are their misconceptions including epistemological obstacles?; How do the function concepts develop and are acquired? For this a survey has been conducted to 95 engineering students just before they start Calculus course. We have done research on other major areas including psychology, economics and statistics to see how function is defined in these areas. Function definitions from US math text books are also introduced. Based on the these and the survey, some suggestions are made on the new curriculum which treat function as a correspondence relation. Vertical line test should be added to the Algebra II/Pre calculus course to check the univalent property.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to apply team-based learning to dental hygiene students in theoretical oral prophylaxis class, one of required courses geared toward acquiring professional knowledge on preventive public health, as oral prophylaxis was counted among major duties of dental hygienists. It's ultimately meant to compare the effects of team- based learning and expository instruction on the learning motivation and self-directed learning capabilities of learners in order to discuss the effects of team-based learning in dental hygiene education. Methods : The subjects in this study were 60 dental hygiene students at C college. Out of them, 32 students who were freshmen as of 2007 were grouped into an experimental group, and 28 students who were freshmen as of 2006 were selected as a control group. The experimental group was engaged in team-based learning from August 30 to December 6, 2007, and the control group took expository lessons from August 28 to December 8, 2006. Their learning motivation and self-directed learning capabilities were evaluated by using t-test, paired t-test and GLM analysis. Results : The findings of the study were as follows: 1. The experimental group scored better in learning motivation than the control group after they were engaged in team-based learning (p<.001). According to GLM analysis, there was a significant intergroup gap in learning motivation, and the two groups were statistically significantly different in its subfactors involving attention, relevance and confidence(p<.05). 2. The experimental group excelled the control group at self-directed learning capabilities(p<.05), and the team-based learning had a better effect on self-directed learning capabilities than the expository instruction. Conclusions : Given the findings of the study, the team-based learning was more effective than the expository instruction at boosting the learning motivation and self-directed learning capabilities of the students. Therefore revised teaching methods should be prepared in consideration of the characteristics of dental hygiene courses, and the development of new instructional models and educational programs is required as well.

  • During the recent years at a middle level Engineering School located at the local areas in Korea, more than 20 percent of freshmen had failed at their first College Mathematics. In consequence, many of them had hard time to survive at their major curriculums. The purpose of this study is to look for the main reasons of their failure and suggest an alternation of the present curriculum. Using the responses to the questionnaires and placement test scores, we studied the characteristics of the students' Mathematical abilities and analyzed how they were related to their grades of the First College Mathematics at the end of the first semester. The mathematical ability of the students at the middle level Engineering School turned out to range from bottom to top even though most of them revealed their interests towards Mathematics. The students with low scores at the placement test were more likely to fail at their first College Mathematics. Thus we suggest that the school should open a new preparation course ahead of the First College Mathematics for those who achieve low scores at the placement test and also professors should write proper books and develop ways of teaching.

  • The speed of the reformation of the Korean engineering and science education systems is very slow compared with the fast change of the society. Current society requires colleges to raise high quality gold color engineers, who can feed tens of thousands people, however current education system cannot fulfill the requirement. So we need a novel education system to adapt the fast change of the society. In this study, we analyzed the difference of the education quality between supplies and demands, and based on the analysis, we suggested a new continuous quality improving system. We also collected current data on the student capability of Korean engineering freshmen and surveyed on the required vocational basic skills. Finally we suggested some programs with that the government could support improving the quality of engineering and science college students.
