  • Considering on the crisis and dilemma of monumentality in Modern architecture, this study analyse the historic reason of decay and new possibility of monumentality within the context of contemporary socio-cultural context. Historically monumentality has been considered as a main substance of High architecture in e tradition of Western Architecture. Difference between building and architecture mainly lies in monumentality which brings about esthetic quality. Usually architects take it granted that the physical and formal characteristics automatically cause the monumentality, But since the modem period the decline of communicative and representative function of architecture made this belief questionable. As Monumentality itself faced the dilemma with the modernity, ironically architects has to response to the task to handle the increasing social demands of monumental building. This study firstly shows the dilemma of monumentality in depth in case of the holocaust museum. Then we analyse the concept of monumentality itself by means of theoretical view of A. Loos and A Riegl We also analyse the change of role which monumental building played in history. Cultural and social change of context, and fundamental change of architecture old way of building a monument impossible. In conclusion this study proposes the new concept and searches new horizon of monumentality with a finding of the otherness of monumentality. Conventional monumental building language has to give way to new approaches. With some examples we already can find a new possibility.

  • Catmull-Clark subdivision scheme provides a powerful method for building smooth and complex surfaces. But the number of faces in the uniformly refined meshes increases exponentially with respect to subdivision depth. Adaptive tessellation reduces the number of faces needed to yield a smooth approximation to the limit surface and, consequently, makes the rendering process more efficient. In this paper, we present a new adaptive tessellation method for general Catmull-Clark subdivision surfaces. Different from previous control mesh refinement based approaches, which generate approximate meshes that usually do not interpolate the limit surface, the new method is based on direct evaluation of the limit surface to generate an inscribed polyhedron of the limit surface. With explicit evaluation of general Catmull-Clark subdivision surfaces becoming available, the new adaptive tessellation method can precisely measure error for every point of the limit surface. Hence, it has complete control of the accuracy of the tessellation result. Cracks are avoided by using a recursive color marking process to ensure that adjacent patches or subpatches use the same limit surface points in the construction of the shared boundary. The new method performs limit surface evaluation only at points that are needed for the final rendering process. Therefore it is very fast and memory efficient. The new method is presented for the general Catmull-Clark subdivision scheme. But it can be used for any subdivision scheme that has an explicit evaluation method for its limit surface.

  • Epidemiology and preventive medicine are changing together with Population and health and with ever expanding medical and non medical technologies. New technologies make epidemiology methodologically more sophisticated, but such advances risk overshadowing epidemiology's most important role: raising questions, providing answers, and helping the medical decision-making at ail levels of prevention. Epidemiology also plays a major role in the evaluation of new and other technologies whose effectiveness is poorly known. Epidemiological approaches, methods, techniques, and interpretations are widely used in new and rapidly expanding fields of medicine: research evaluation and synthesis (meta-analysis), establishment of guidelines for clinical preventive practices, new medical technology assessment, guidelines for national and international health policies, evidence-based medicine, outcomes research and disease management ('population-based' medicine and quality of care improvement). In the nearest future, infectious and noninfectious diseases may cease to be almost the sole subjects of epidemiology and they may share their place with other mass phenomena of the next millennium, such as medical practices and care, or political, social and economic actions and their consequences. Not only will primary, secondary, and tertiary Prevention will remain in the epidemiological mainstream, but health protection and health promotion will require perhaps a redefinition of epidemiology in these domains. Epidemiology and preventive medicine are both subjects of medical ethics and dilemma for right choices.

  • With the advent of flash memory based new storage device (SSD), there is considerable interest within the computer industry in using flash memory based storage devices for many different types of application. The dynamic index structure of large text collections has been a primary issue in the Information Retrieval Applications among them. Previous studies have proven the three approaches to be effective: In- Place, merge-based index structure and a combination of both. The above-mentioned strategies have been researched with the traditional storage device (HDD) which has a constraint on how keep the contiguity of dynamic data. However, in case of the new storage device, we don' have any constraint contiguity problems due to its low access latency time. But, although the new storage device has superiority such as low access latency and improved I/O throughput speeds, it is still not well suited for traditional dynamic index structures because of the poor random write throughput in practical systems. Therefore, using the experimental performance evaluation of various index maintenance schemes on the new storage device, we propose an efficient index structure for new storage device that improves significantly the index maintenance speed without degradation of query performance.

  • In this study, the theoretical maximum power of a heat engine was investigated by sequential Carnot cycle model, for a low-grade heat source of about $100^{\circ}C$. In contrast to conventional approaches, the pattern search algorithm was employed to optimize the two design variables to maximize power. Variations of the maximum power and the optimum values of design variables were investigated for a wide range of UA(overall heat transfer conductance) change. The results show that maximizing heat source utilization does not always maximize power.

  • Korean population is ecpected to reach about 50 million by year 2000. And per capita GNP might attain the $5,000 level. This is bound to have profound impact on housing. For one thing, population and income growth will accelerate new household formation thus increasing new housing needs. On the other, changes in the housing preference function in association with income growth and new way of life would mean increasing demand for better dwelling environment. In addition, by year 2000, there will be many more elderly households necessitating new approaches to housing. The question is whether or not Korea could cope with new housing perspectives. If Korean housing has made in the past some progress in housing quality, it has not been able to tackle the mounting housing shortage. This is attributable to the concentration of effective housing demand in the hands of upper income groups in association with skewed income distribution and sustained dwelling price hike. Korea needs some basic changes in housing policy. The public sector should produce much more small dwellings either for sales or renting. Second, mortgage loans should be expanded so as to increase the access to housing. Third, every thing must be done to cut down the dwelling price through tax cut, relaxation of some requlations, cyclical stabilization of dwelling construction and loan subsidies.

  • Available methods to determine the ultimate bearing capacity of shallow foundations may not be accurate enough owing to the complicated failure mechanism and diversity of the underlying soils. Accordingly, applying new methods of artificial intelligence can improve the prediction of the ultimate bearing capacity. The M5' model tree and the genetic programming are two robust artificial intelligence methods used for prediction purposes. The model tree is able to categorize the data and present linear models while genetic programming can give nonlinear models. In this study, a combination of these methods, called the M5'-GP approach, is employed to predict the ultimate bearing capacity of the shallow foundations, so that the advantages of both methods are exploited, simultaneously. Factors governing the bearing capacity of the shallow foundations, including width of the foundation (B), embedment depth of the foundation (D), length of the foundation (L), effective unit weight of the soil (${\gamma}$) and internal friction angle of the soil (${\varphi}$) are considered for modeling. To develop the new model, experimental data of large and small-scale tests were collected from the literature. Evaluation of the new model by statistical indices reveals its better performance in contrast to both traditional and recent approaches. Moreover, sensitivity analysis of the proposed model indicates the significance of various predictors. Additionally, it is inferred that the new model compares favorably with different models presented by various researchers based on a comprehensive ranking system.

  • As a result of active geological investigation of faults in Korea, many Quaternary faults have been identified and some of them were judged to have potential to generate earthquakes. Those faults need to be considered as additional seismic sources in the seismic hazard analysis. When a fault is introduced as a new source, the earthquakes generated by the fault should be removed from the area sources that include any part of the fault, to avoid double counting. In practice, however, double counting cannot completely be avoided as the complete separation of the fault-generated earthquakes from the area sources is impossible due to uncertainties related to the earthquake location, subsurface structures of faults, etc. When a new fault source is introduced, the only constraint is the invariance of earthquake frequency. The maximum earthquake and the Richter-b value should also be subject to change, but there are no competent approaches to estimate the change due to incomplete separation of earthquakes. To gain insight into the effect of a new fault source, an example calculation of the seismic hazard were carried out. The example calculation shows that addition of a new fault source centers seismic hazard around the fault source.

  • Carbohydrates serve three different principal functions in the metabolism of plants. They are the primary products of energy fixation, they are important transport metabolites, and they are deposited as structural or storage compounds. Modification of carbohydrate metabolism therefore covers approaches to modify yield, to change sink/source relationships and thereby alter the ratio of harvestable material, and to improve the quality of crop plants. The scope of this article is to summarize research done at the Max-Planck-Institute related to the first two fields and to present in some detail what we learned, when we established a new carbohydrate storage form in potato.
