  • The lipids content and neutral lipid component of milled rice grain were studied for four nonglutionous and two glutinous varieties grown in Korea. The average total lipid contents in nonglutinous and glutinous varieties were 0.94% and 1.78% by dry weight basis, respectively. The ratios of neutral lipid, glycolipid and phospholipid in the total lipid were 76.5 : 14.8 : 8.6 in the nonglutionous and 82.4 : 11.1 : 6.5 in the glutinous, respectively. Main classes of the neutral lipids were triglycerides, free fatty acids, steryl esters, free sterols, monoglycerids and diglycerides in both of nonglutinous and glutinous, and no significance was observed in the content of the classes between both varieties. The major fatty acid composition of total and neutral lipids were linoleic, oleic and palmitic acids in both of nonglutinous and glutinous varieties.

  • This study compared the fatty acid composition of wild and cultured specimens of the sea cucumber Apostichopus japonicus. We extracted total lipids from the specimens and determined their fatty acid compositions through capillary gas chromatography, resulting in the identification of 53 fatty acids. We found that wild sea cucumbers were rich in palmitoleic (C16:1n-7) and eicosapentaenoic acid (C20:5n-3), whereas cultured specimens were rich in eicosenoic (C20:1n-9) and arachidonic acid (C20:4n-6). In both types of sea cucumbers, the highest percentage of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) consisted of polar lipids (PL), followed by total lipids (TL) and neutral lipids (NL). Cultured sea cucumbers contained a higher percentage of total lipids (TL) than wild sea cucumbers did, whereas there was no significant difference between the two groups in the percentages of neutral (NL) and polar lipids (PL).

  • A study was conducted to develop optimal conditions for a large-scale, sequential separation method for value-added components from egg yolk. Starting with liquid egg yolk, immunoglobulin Y (IgY), phospholipids, and neutral lipids were extracted sequentially using water, ethanol, and n-hexane. The remainder was yolk proteins. Adjusting the pH of diluted egg yolk to pH 5.0-5.2 decreased phospholipids content in the supernatant after centrifugation, which was very important for preventing clogging problem of ultrafiltration filters during the subsequent concentration step for IgY separation. Extraction of precipitants after centrifugation with four volumes of 100% ethanol once removed most of the phospholipids and the purity of phospholipids was more than 85% (wt.) after drying. The subsequent extraction of precipitant from ethanol extraction with four volumes of hexane 3 times removed neutral lipids almost completely and resulted in a high protein product with minimal lipids. The sequential separation method is considered to be advantageous for large-scale separations of many valuable components from egg yolk.

  • This study was designed to elucidate the lipid contents, neutral lipids components and fatty acid composition in fresh shellfishes, produced in Korea. Four kinds of shellfishes including sea mussel, short-necked clam, corb shell and and ark shell were selected according to the higher sales order and cheaper retail price at fish markets in Seoul in July 1985. The results abtained were as follows; 1. The average total lipid contents in four shellfishes were 2.3% by wet weight basis. The ratios of neutrial lipid, glycolipid and phospholipid in the total lipid were 51.1 : 4.9 : 44.0 in sea mussel, 66.0 : 3.2 : 30.8 in ark shell, 37.8 : 2.2 : 60.0 in short-necked clam and 54.5 : 2.0 : 53.5 in corb shell, 2. The average value of acid value, iodine value and unsaponifiables contents of total lipids were 1.3, 217.8, 92.0 and 20.3%, respectively. 3. The composition of the neutral lipids were triglycerides, esterified fatty acids, sterylesters, free sterols and monoglycerides in four shellfishes. 4. The major fatty acid composition of total lipids were palmitic, eicosapentaenoic, docosahexaenoic and palmitoleic acids in four shellfishes. The average total unsaturated fatty acids of total lipid were 64.5%, and $\omega$-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids were 27.0%. The average p/s Ratiio were 1.3.

  • Total lipid contents in rice bran for Poong-San(Tongil) and Dong-Jin(Japonica) were 16.13% and 16.97%, respectively. Neutral lipids for Pong-San(75.20%) were slightly higher than those for Dong-Jin(73.69%), whereas contents of glycolipid for Poong-San(16.71%) were lower than those for Dong-Jin(22.80%). Contents of phospholipid in Poong-San(8.09%) were much higher than those in Dong-Jin(3.51%). Acid, peroxide and thiobarbituric acid value of total lipids extracted from rice bran of Poong-San were slightly lower than those of Dong-Jin. Iodine value showed the reverse trend. The neutral lipids were fractionated and identified as hydrocarbon, esterified sterol, triglyceride, free fatty acid, free sterol, diglyceride and monoglyceride. Triglyceride contents were less than common edible oils, but diglyceride and monoglyceride contents were higher. Among the glycolipids contained in the polar lipids, esterified sterylglycoside(11.46%) was the most abundant. Of the phospholipids, phosphatidyl ethanolamine, phosphatidyl inositol and phosphatidyl choline were the major components. Main fatty acids in the total lipids, three lipid components and stepwise eluted individual lipids were olelic acid, linoleic acid and palmitic acid. The fatty acid composition of the neutral lipids was similar to that of the total lipids. In glycolipids, the content of linoleic acid was higher than that of oleic acid, and palmitic acid was predominant in the fatty acid composition of the esterified sterylglycoside.

  • Lipid composition and fatty acid composition were characterized in the membrane of a marine ciliate protozoan (Uronema marinum). Phospholipids accounted for 70% of total lipid, and the remainder was neutral lipids. Total phospholipids were separated as phosphatidylcholine $(24.26\%)$, phosphatidylethanolamine $(22.21\%)$, phosphatidylinositol $(6.14\%)$, phosphatidylserne $(5.11\%)$, cardiolipin $(3.07\%)$ and unidentified phospholipids $(28.72\%)$ through high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Fatty acid composition of neutral lipids and phospholipids was determined by gas chromatography (GC), based solely on comparision of retention times. In neutral lipids, the most abundant fatty acid group was monounsaturated fatty acid $(48.3\% of total fatty acids)$ with oleic acid (18:1) and nervonic acid (24:1). Saturated fatty acids comprised $29.6\%$ of total fatty acids, with palmitic acid (16:0), stearic acid (18:0) ane myristic acid (14:0), and polyunsaturated fatty acid accounted for $33.0\%$ with $Di-homo-\gamma-linolenic$ acid (20:3) and linoleic acid (18:2). Wherease phospholipids predominantly contained the fatty acid group in the following order: polyunsaturated fatty acids $(52.7\%\;of\;total\;fatty\;acids)$ with linoleic acid (18:2) and $\gamma-linolenic$ acid (18:3) > monounsaturated fatty acids $(28.5\%\;of\;total\;fatty\;acids)$ with oleic acid (18:1) and palmitoleic acid (16:1) > saturated fatty acids $(25.5\%\;of\;total\;fatty\;acids)$ with palmitic acid (16:0), stearic acid (18:0) and myristic acid (14:0).

  • Fatty acid compositions of Setaria italica, Panirum miliaceum and Sorghum bicolor were determined with total lipids extracted. Total lipid content of Setaria italica, Panium miliaceum and Sorghum bicolor were 3.9%(w/w), 2.7%(w/w) and 2.3%(w/w), respectively. Total lipids were fractionated into neutral lipids, glycolipids and phospholipids by the silicic acid column chromatography. Neutral lipids were the most abundant component. Among fatty acids separated by GC, linoleic acid was determined as a major fraction in Setaria italica, Panicum miliaceum and Sorghum bicolor. Palmitic acid and oleic acid were also separated as second major components. In Setaria italica, behenic acid was separated from the phospholipid fraction and myristic acid from the neutral lipid fraction. Linolenic acid was not detected in all the samples.
