  • This study proposed a robust artificial intelligence (AI) model based on the social behaviour of the imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA) and artificial neural network (ANN) for modelling the deflection of reinforced concrete beams, abbreviated as ICA-ANN model. Accordingly, the ICA was used to adjust and optimize the parameters of an ANN model (i.e., weights and biases) aiming to improve the accuracy of the ANN model in modelling the deflection reinforced concrete beams. A total of 120 experimental datasets of reinforced concrete beams were employed for this aim. Therein, applied load, tensile reinforcement strength and the reinforcement percentage were used to simulate the deflection of reinforced concrete beams. Besides, five other AI models, such as ANN, SVM (support vector machine), GLMNET (lasso and elastic-net regularized generalized linear models), CART (classification and regression tree) and KNN (k-nearest neighbours), were also used for the comprehensive assessment of the proposed model (i.e., ICA-ANN). The comparison of the derived results with the experimental findings demonstrates that among the developed models the ICA-ANN model is that can approximate the reinforced concrete beams deflection in a more reliable and robust manner.

  • In this paper, soft learning techniques are used to predict the ultimate torsional capacity of Reinforced Concrete beams strengthened with Fiber Reinforced Polymer. Soft computing techniques, namely Artificial Neural Network, trained by various back propagation algorithms, and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm, have been used to model and predict the torsional strength of Reinforced Concrete beams strengthened with Fiber Reinforced Polymer. The performance of each model has been evaluated by using statistical parameters such as coefficient of determination (R2), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), and Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE). The hybrid PSO NN model resulted in an R2 of 0.9292 with an RMSE of 5.35 for training and an R2 of 0.9328 with an RMSE of 4.57 for testing. Another model, ANN BP, produced an R2 of 0.9125 with an RMSE of 6.17 for training and an R2 of 0.8951 with an RMSE of 5.79 for testing. The results of the PSO NN model were in close agreement with the experimental values. Thus, the PSO NN model can be used to predict the ultimate torsional capacity of RC beams strengthened with FRP with greater acceptable accuracy.

  • This paper proposes a new approach to the optimization method of a blending process with neural network. The method is based on the error backpropagation learning algorithm for neural network. Since the neural network can model an arbitrary nonlinear mapping, it is used as a system solver. A fuzzy membership function is used in parallel with the neural network to minimize the difference between measurement value and input value of neural network. As a result, we can guarantee the reliability and stability of blending process by the help of neural network and fuzzy membership function.

  • A fuzzy neural network model is presented to predict residual stress for dissimilar metal welding under various welding conditions. The fuzzy neural network model, which consists of a fuzzy inference system and a neuronal training system, is optimized by a hybrid learning method that combines a genetic algorithm to optimize the membership function parameters and a least squares method to solve the consequent parameters. The data of finite element analysis are divided into four data groups, which are split according to two end-section constraints and two prediction paths. Four fuzzy neural network models were therefore applied to the numerical data obtained from the finite element analysis for the two end-section constraints and the two prediction paths. The fuzzy neural network models were trained with the aid of a data set prepared for training (training data), optimized by means of an optimization data set and verified by means of a test data set that was different (independent) from the training data and the optimization data. The accuracy of fuzzy neural network models is known to be sufficiently accurate for use in an integrity evaluation by predicting the residual stress of dissimilar metal welding zones.

  • A model based on genetic algorithm optimization, GA-SVM, is proposed to warn university students of their status. This model improves the predictive effect of support vector machines. The genetic optimization algorithm is used to train the hyperparameters and adjust the kernel parameters, kernel penalty factor C, and gamma to optimize the support vector machine model, which can rapidly achieve convergence to obtain the optimal solution. The experimental model was trained on open-source datasets and validated through comparisons with random forest, backpropagation neural network, and GA-SVM models. The test results show that the genetic algorithm-optimized radial basis kernel support vector machine model GA-SVM can obtain higher accuracy rates when used for early warning in university learning.

  • Time-Space-Time(T-S-T) switching network is modeled as a graceful degrading system. Call blocking probability is defined as a measure of performance. Several performance related measures are suggested under the presence of failure. An optimization model is proposed, which determines optimal values of system parameters of the switching network.

  • This paper aims to consider an overall benefit-duration optimization (OBDO) problem for the sake of maximizing owner's economic benefits, whilst considering influences of schedule compression incurred opportunity income on the profitability of a large-scale construction project. Unlike previous schedule optimization models and techniques that have focused on project duration or cost minimization, with greater weight on contractors' interests, OBDO facilitates owner's economic benefits through overall benefit-duration optimization. In this paper, the objective function of OBDO model is formulated. An example is illustrated to prove the feasibility and practicability of the overall benefit-duration optimization problem. The significance of employing OBDO model and future research work are also described.

  • A60 class bulkhead penetration piece is a fire resistance system installed on a bulkhead compartment to protect lives and to prevent flame diffusion in a fire accident on a ship and offshore plant. This study focuses on the approximate optimization of the fire resistance design of the A60 class bulkhead penetration piece using a multi-island genetic algorithm. Transient heat transfer analysis was performed to evaluate the fire resistance design of the A60 class bulkhead penetration piece. For approximate optimization, the bulkhead penetration piece length, diameter, material type, and insulation density were considered discrete design variables; moreover, temperature, cost, and productivity were considered constraint functions. The approximate optimum design problem based on the meta-model was formulated by determining the discrete design variables by minimizing the weight of the A60 class bulkhead penetration piece subject to the constraint functions. The meta-models used for the approximate optimization were the Kriging model, response surface method, and radial basis function-based neural network. The results from the approximate optimization were compared to the actual results of the analysis to determine approximate accuracy. We conclude that the radial basis function-based neural network among the meta-models used in the approximate optimization generates the most accurate optimum design results for the fire resistance design of the A60 class bulkhead penetration piece.

  • Wireless networks (WNs) are developed and applied widely in a lot of areas. Now, a new generation of wireless networks is coming, and that is Wireless Mesh Network (WMN). At present, there are not so many researches which deal on this area. Most researches are derived from Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANET) and WNs. In WMNs, there are some applications that require real-time delivery. To guarantee this, rate control and congestion control are needed. This problem leads to optimization issue in transport layer. In this paper, we propose a mathematical model which is applied in rate and congestion control in WNMs. From this model, we optimize rate and congestion control in WMNs by maximizing network utility. The proposed algorithm is implemented in distributed way both in links and sources.

  • Most of the existing researches on systemwide optimization of generator maintenance scheduling do not consider the equivalent operating hours(EOHs) mainly due to the difficulties of calculating the EOHs of the CCGTs in the large scale system. In order to estimate the EOHs not only the operating hours but also the number of start-up/shutdown during the planning period should be estimated, which requires the mathematical model to incorporate the economic dispatch model and unit commitment model. The model is inherently modelled as a large scale mixed-integer nonlinear programming problem and the computation time increases exponentially and intractable as the system size grows. To make the problem tractable, this paper proposes an EOH calculation based on demand grouping by K-means clustering algorithm. Network congestion is also considered in order to improve the accuracy of EOH calculation. This proposed method is applied to the actual Korean electricity market and compared to other existing methods.
