  • The routing protocol for low-power and lossy networks (RPL) is an internet protocol based routing protocol developed and standardized by IETF in 2012 to support a wide range of applications for low-power and lossy-networks (LLNs). In LLNs consisting of resource-constrained devices, the energy consumption of battery powered sensing devices during network operations can greatly impact network lifetime. In the case of inefficient route selection, the energy depletion from even a few nodes in the network can damage network integrity and reliability by creating holes in the network. In this paper, a composite energy-aware node metric ($RER_{BDI}$) is proposed for RPL; this metric uses both the residual energy ratio (RER) of the nodes and their battery discharge index. This composite metric helps avoid overburdening power depleted network nodes during packet routing from the source towards the destination oriented directed acyclic graph root node. Additionally, an objective function is defined for RPL, which combines the node metric $RER_{BDI}$ and the expected transmission count (ETX) link quality metric; this helps to improve the overall network packet delivery ratio. The COOJA simulator is used to evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme. The simulations show encouraging results for the proposed scheme in terms of network lifetime, packet delivery ratio and energy consumption, when compared to the most popular schemes for RPL like ETX, hop-count and RER.

  • A research to evaluate efficiency of design optimization was performed for aerodynamic design optimization problem in distributed computing environment. The aerodynamic analyses which take most of computational work during design optimization were divided into several jobs and allocated to associated PC clients through network. This is not a parallel process based on domain decomposition rather than a simultaneous distributed-analyses process using network-distributed computers. GBOM(gradient-based optimization method), SAO(Sequential Approximate Optimization) and RSM(Response Surface Method) were implemented to perform design optimization of transonic airfoil and to evaluate their efficiencies. One dimensional minimization followed by direction search involved in the GBOM was found an obstacle against improving efficiency of the design process in distributed computing environment. The SAO was found quite suitable for the distributed computing environment even it has a handicap of local search. The RSM is apparently the fittest for distributed computing environment, but additional trial and error works needed to enhance the reliability of the approximation model are annoying and time-consuming so that they often impair the automatic capability of design optimization and also deteriorate efficiency from the practical point of view.

  • With the advance of network and software infrastructure, Grid-computing technology on a cluster of heterogeneous computing resources becomes pervasive. Grid computing is required a coordinated use of an assembly of distributed computers, which are linked by WAN. As the number of grid system components increases, the probability of failure in the grid computing is higher than that in a traditional parallel computing. To provide the robustness of grid applications, fault detection is critical and is essential elements in design and implementation. In this paper, a OGSA based process fault-detection services presented to provide high reliability under low network traffic environment.

  • In this paper, we introduce a new soft computing technique that dwells on the ideas of combining fuzzy rules in a fuzzy system with polynomial neural networks (PNN). The PNN is a flexible neural architecture whose structure is developed through the modeling process. Unfortunately, the PNN has a fatal drawback in that it cannot be constructed for nonlinear systems with only a small amount of input variables. To overcome this limitation in the conventional PNN, we employed one of three principal soft computing components such as a fuzzy system. As such, a space of input variables is partitioned into several subspaces by the fuzzy system and these subspaces are utilized as new input variables to the PNN architecture. The proposed soft computing technique is achieved by merging the fuzzy system and the PNN into one unified framework. As a result, we can find a workable synergistic environment and the main characteristics of the two modeling techniques are harmonized. Thus, the proposed method alleviates the problems of PNN while providing superb performance. Identification results of the three-input nonlinear static function and nonlinear system with two inputs will be demonstrated to demonstrate the performance of the proposed approach.

  • With the rapid advancement of Internet services, there has been a dramatic increase in services that dynamically provide Internet resources on demand, such as cloud computing. In a cloud computing service, because the number of users in the cloud is changing dynamically, it is more efficient to utilize a flexible network technology such as software-defined networking (SDN). However, to efficiently support the SDN-based cloud computing service with limited resources, it is important to effectively manage the flow table at the SDN switch. Therefore, in this paper, a new flow management scheme is proposed that is able to, through efficient management, speed up the flow-entry search speed and simultaneously maximize the number of flow entries. The proposed scheme maximizes the capacity of the flow table by efficiently storing flow entry information while quickly executing the operation of flow-entry search by employing a hash index. In this paper, the proposed scheme is implemented by modifying the actual software SDN switch and then, its performance is analyzed. The results of the analysis show that the proposed scheme, by managing the flow tables efficiently, can support more flow entries.

  • The emerging Fifth Generation (5G) network technology brings us a new demand for low latency services. However, it may not be possible for long-distanced cloud computing servers to support users with satisfactory low latency services. For this reason, Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) technology are gaining attraction since it is designed to provide low latency services to users by placing cloud computing resources to base-stations or mobile switching centers nearby users. Accordingly, it is necessary to verify the deployed containers on the MECs are reliable enough to provide low latency services empirically. For the purpose, we develop a testing tool to verify the reliability as well as network resources status of running MECs by deploying containers on the MECs in a Kubernetes environment.

  • Virtualization technologies are being adopted and broadly utilized in many fields and at different levels. In cloud computing, achieving load balancing across large distributed virtual machines is considered a complex optimization problem with an essential importance in cloud computing systems and data centers as the overloading or underloading of tasks on VMs may cause multiple issues in the cloud system like longer execution time, machine failure, high power consumption, etc. Therefore, load balancing mechanism is an important aspect in cloud computing that assist in overcoming different performance issues. In this research, we propose a new approach that combines the advantages of different task allocation algorithms like Round robin algorithm, and Random allocation with different threshold techniques like the VM utilization and the number of allocation counts using least connection mechanism. We performed extensive simulations and experiments that augment different scheduling policies to overcome the resource utilization problem without compromising other performance measures like makespan and execution time of the tasks. The proposed system provided better results compared to the original round robin as it takes into consideration the dynamic state of the system.

  • The interconnection of an enormous number of devices into the Internet at a massive scale is a consequence of the Internet of Things (IoT). As a result, tasks offloading from these IoT devices to remote cloud data centers become expensive and inefficient as their number and amount of its emitted data increase exponentially. It is also a challenge to optimize IoT device energy consumption while meeting its application time deadline and data delivery constraints. Consequently, Fog Computing was proposed to support efficient IoT tasks processing as it has a feature of lower service delay, being adjacent to IoT nodes. However, cloud task offloading is still performed frequently as Fog computing has less resources compared to remote cloud. Thus, optimized schemes are required to correctly characterize and distribute IoT devices tasks offloading in a hybrid IoT, Fog, and cloud paradigm. In this paper, we present a detailed survey and classification of of recently published research articles that address the energy efficiency of task offloading schemes in IoT-Fog-Cloud paradigm. Moreover, we also developed a taxonomy for the classification of these schemes and provided a comparative study of different schemes: by identifying achieved advantage and disadvantage of each scheme, as well its related drawbacks and limitations. Moreover, we also state open research issues in the development of energy efficient, scalable, optimized task offloading schemes for Fog computing.
