  • We report a case of metastatic carcinoma of the skin in 62-year-old male who showed multiple nodules on the anterior chest, scalp, face and left axilla for 2 months' duration. He suffered from lower abdominal discomfortness for 6 months. Histopathologic findings revealed atypical cell nests and some tubular or glandular formation in the dermis and subcutaneous fat tissue. Material in the lumen showed diastase resistant and PAS positive, and alcian blue positive at pH 2.4, but negative pH 0.4. So it represented sialomucin. We did not find primary site of malignant tumor. In view of clinical and histopathological findings, it was considered to be originated from the large intestine.

  • A case of nonsecretory multiple myeloma in a 66 year-old-woman is reported. At first, she complained severe neck pain and radiologic finding showed C2 pathologic fracture. She complained severe low back pain 4 month later and L1 compression fracture was found. The lumbar MRI showed a 1.4cm-sized round enhancing lesion in the body of T12. Bone marrow aspiration biopsy at L1 spine showed a few polymorphous and small nests of mononuclear cell. L1 lamina bone biopsy showed many abnormal plasma cells. Pathologic diagnosis was multiple myeloma. However, plasma electrophoresis and protein immunoelectrophoresis of serum and urine of patient were normal. So, it is a nonecretory multiple myeloma case and the incidence of nonsecretory multiple myeloma is known to about 1% of all multiple myeloma.

  • The sexual dimorphism of river sculpin (Cottus poecilopus Heckel) was investigated samples were collected from the Chiak stream from January 1993 to April 1994. Sexual dimorphism in body size and some morphological characteristics were observed in this species ; males were larger in size and had a larger mouth, anal fin, ventral fin and pevic fin than females. Males have a genital papilla and nuptial color, but females do not. Females may mate preferentially with large males. Larger males could be superior in nest defense and fanning of eggs to smaller ones, thus resulting in higher survival of eggs. Similary, the larger mouth in males could be advantageous in acquiring and defending their nests. Such sexual dimorphism in this species may reflect to outcome of sexual selection.

  • The composition of the Martes flavigula diet has been extensively studied, but little is known about its insect component. This study characterized the insect diet and insect nest materials in the feces of M. flavigula. A total of 952 fecal samples were collected in Jirisan National Park from January 2009 to November 2011, and 1379 species or taxonomic groups were identified. M. flavigula fed on insects (8.7%) and bee wax (5.0%), which comprised 2.9% and 4.4% of the dry weight of M. flavigula feces, respectively. A total of 12 insect species belonging to 8 families in 3 orders were identified. The most frequently found insects were Hymenoptera (frequency of occurrence, FO, 89.1), including Vespa simillima simillima (FO, 37.3) and Vespula koreensis koreensis (FO, 20.0). The Vespidae constituted the majority of the insect diet in autumn when the diversity of marten's prey was strongly reduced, probably because the numbers of social insects were sufficient for M. flavigula. In addition, the data suggest that M. flavigula attacks the nests of social wasps in late autumn when males do not have a venomous sting and new queens are less aggressive than workers. Bee wax appeared in all seasons and the highest rate was from spring to early summer. However, the remains of honeybees were not found in feces; thus, M. flavigula presumably eats honey but not honeybees.

  • Domestic fowl still tend to exhibit very similar behavior such as perching, nesting and dust-bathing to their ancestor, Red Jungle Fowl (Gallus gallus), even though they have been domesticated for 8,000 years. If given the opportunity, they choose high place for staying at night, a dark place for laying eggs and do dust bath in litter area. Therefore, these behaviors are considered for very important role in improving the welfare of laying hens. In EU and some countries, farmers must provide perches, nests and litter for the housing of laying hens. An understanding of behavior can lead to enhance physical health, emotional condition and welfare of laying hens. Unfortunately, there is little information on behavior of laying hens in Korea. Therefore, we researched the literature on certain behavior of laying hens.

  • Metastatic squamous cell carcinoma was described in two female Pere David's deer reared at Everland zoo. Both deer with chronic emaciation had the mass on right maxilla(9$\times$11$\times$15cm or 20$\times$17cm) which was composed of miliary tan creamy contents and encapsulated by connective tissue. The undulating contents in the mass was a1so extended in the underlying or adjacent soft palate, maxillary and frontal sinus causing severe bone destruction. In one deer, two fistula were also noted in the right periocular area. Histologically, the neoplastic masses of both deer consist of anastomosing cords or nests of squamous epithelial cells with intercellular bridge or keratin pearl formation. The neoplastic cells invade deep into the subcutis and bony tissue. Mitotic figure was rare. Multifocal areas of necrosis and hemorrhages were also noted in the dermis. Metastasis to maxilla and ethmoid bones and/or to submandibular lymph node was noted in both cases. The diagnosis was based on the results of histopathology.

  • Among benign proliferation of the urinary bladder, polypoid cystitis is a rare disease in dogs. It is characterized by epithelial proliferation, chronic inflammation in lamina propria, and development of a polypoid mass or masses without evidence of neoplasia. This report describes histopathologic features of polypoid cystitis in dog. A 10-year-old spayed female shihtzu-dog was presented with two-month history of hematuria. Abdominal ultrasonography confirmed the thickened bladder wall and calculi in both kidneys. Surgical biopsy sample was taken from the thickened bladder mucosa for the histopathologic examination. The mass was covered with irregular hyperplastic transitional epithelium with the projection into the lumen in multifocal areas as well as many Brunn's nests in lamina propria. Many inflammatory cells such as lymphocyte, plasma cell, and macrophage and few neutrophils were occupied in lamina propria and submucosa. Proliferated fibrous tissues in lamina propria were clarified by using special staining methods. These collagens were stained blue with Masson's trichrome and red with van Gieson, but negative for alcian blue. Based on the clinical, gross, and histopathologic examinations, this case was diagnosed as polypoid cystitis in a dog. In our best knowledge, this is the first report of polypoid cystitis in dog in Korea.

  • Clear cell sarcoma is a rare soft tissue sarcoma that occurs in tendons and aponeuroses, usually in the lower extremities in young adults. The exact histogenesis is not definitely established. We experienced a case of 58 year-old female who presented with a $3.2{\times}2.2cm$ sized mass located in the subcutaneous tissue of the left lower thigh. The mass was well-circumscribed, grayish and firm. Two small satellite nodules were also seen. Histrionically, the tumor was composed of round to fusiform cells with clear or pale eosinophilic cytoplasm and separated into compact nests or short fascicles by delicate fibrous septa. The melanin pigments and hemosiderin were seen. Tumor cells showed positive reaction for S-100 protein and HMB-45. The ultrastructural examination showed abundant mitochondria and melanosomes.

  • Basaloid squamous cell carcinoma(BSCC) is a high-grade variant of squamous cell carcinoma, with a prediction for multifocal involvement of the base of tongue, pyriform sinus, supraglottic larynx, hypopharynx and palatine tonsil. It primary affects men in the seventh decade of life with frequent cervical lymph-node metastasis at presentation. Grossly, these tumors are usually firm to hard, with associated central necrosis, occuring as exophytic to nodular masses. Histologically, the this infiltrating tumor offers a variety of growth patterns, including solid, lobular, cribriform, cords, trabeculae, nests and glands or cyst. We present a 55-year-old female who was treated with surgical excision and radiotherapy. She was firstly presented as a recurrent inflammatory neck mass and finally diagnosed with basaloid squamous cell carcinoma in the palatine tonsil.

  • Purpose : Granular cell tumour(GCT) is a rare benign tumour that can arise in anywhere throughout the body. Histopathological diagnosis of malignancy is difficult. We report a case of a granular cell tumor which developed on lower lip. Methods : A 58-year-old male had a palpable mass and whitish plaque in the oral mucosa for three months. Results : Under local anasthesia, the tumor was removed through wide excision including normal skin margin. Immediate reconstruction using local flap was done. Pathologic observation showed nests of polygonal cells with abundant granular, eosinophilic cytoplasm and round nuclei. Immunohistopathologic staining showed positive reaction on S-100 protein Conclusion : The results support the hypothesis that granular cell tumor is derived from Schwann cells. We report here on a case of granular cell tumor of lower lip that was successfully treated with radical resection.
