  • A mobile station in a cell receives interference signals from neighboring base stations. Due to the interference signals, the forward link capacity of the cellular system is reduced. Pilot signal received from a neighboring base station is one of the interference signals. Since the pilot signal is a known signal for all the mobile stations, the pilot interference signal can be cancelled by interference cancellation techniques. In this paper, we propose a demodulator with interference canceller to cancel pilot interference signals received from neighboring base stations. The simulation results show that Eb/No value to obtain BER = 10-2 is lowered by 3㏈ in the propose demodulator.

  • In the present study, we studied the hypermethylation of the human riboflavin transporter 2 (hRFT2) gene and regulation of protein expression in biopsies from resected tissues from Uighur cervical squamous cell carcinoma (CSCC) patients and their neighboring normal tissues. hRFT2 gene promoter region methylation sequences were mapped in cervical cancer cell line SiHa by bisulfite-sequencing PCR and quantitative detection of methylated DNA from 30 pairs of Uighur's CSCCs and adjacent normal tissues by MassARRAY (Sequenom, San Diego, CA, USA) and hRFT2 protein expression was analyzed by immunohistochemistry. In SiHa, we identified 2 CG sites methylated from all of 12CpG sites of the hRFT2 gene. Analysis of the data from quantitative analysis of single CpG site methylation by Sequenom MassARRAY platform showed that the methylation level between two CpG sites (CpG 2 and CpG 3) from CpG 1~12 showed significant differences between CSCC and neighboring normal tissues. However, the methylation level of whole target CpG fragments demonstrated no significant variation between CSCC ($0.476{\pm}0.020$) and neighboring normal tissues ($0.401{\pm}0.019$, p>0.05). There was a tendency for translocation the hRFT2 proteins from cytoplasm/membrane to nucleus in CSCC with increase in methylation of CpG 2 and CpG 3 in hRFT2gene promoter regions, which may relate to the genesis of CSCC. Our results suggested that epigenetic modifications are responsible for aberrant expression of the hRFT2 gene, and may help to understand mechanisms of cervical carcinogenesis.

  • The capacity of a digital cellular CDMA system is evaluated by computer simulation for reverse link (mobile-to-base) with 37 hexagonal cells including 3 rings from a center cell. It is assumed that the channels have shadow fading and the system is ideally power controlled. In this paper the capacity of CBMA system is evaluated for various propagation exponents, voice activity factors and neighboring cell traffics. The following results are obtained. The capacity of CDMA system is increased according to the increase of the propagation exponents and the decrease of the voice activity factors. Its capacity is about 15 and 5 times larger thari that of analog cellular FM/FDMA and digital cellular TDMA for $\gamma=4$ respectively, and is very sensitive to the neighboring cell traffics.

  • Power-efficient base station (BS) operation is one of the important issues in future green cellular networks. Previously well-known BS operation schemes, the cell zooming scheme and the cell wilting and blossoming scheme, require tight cooperation between cells in cellular networks. With the previous schemes, the non-cooperative BSs of a serving cell and neighboring cells could cause coverage holes between the cells, thereby seriously degrading the quality of service as well as the power saving efficiency of the cellular networks. In this paper, we propose a novel power-efficient BS operation scheme for green downlink heterogeneous cellular networks, in which the networks virtually adjust the coverage of a serving macrocell (SM) and neighboring macrocells (NMs) without adjusting the transmission power of the BSs when the SM is lightly loaded, and the networks turn off the BS of the SM when none of active users are associated with the SM. Simulation results show that our proposed scheme significantly improves the power saving efficiency without degrading the quality of service (e.g., system throughput) of a downlink heterogeneous LTE network and outperforms the previous schemes in terms of system throughput and power saving efficiency. In particular, with the proposed scheme, macrocells are able to operate independently without the cooperation of a SM and NMs for green heterogeneous cellular networks.

  • This paper proposes a self-organizing scheme which collects the information of neighboring cells, and then assigns a Physical Cell Identifier (PCI) for a newly deployed cell in LTE systems. The number of PCIs are limited, so the reuse of PCIs in different cells is unavoidable. In a dense urban environment where many small cells such as Pico/Femto cells are deployed under macro cells, it is expected that the number of PCIs becomes more limited. Therefore, the limited number of PCIs needs to be allocated very efficiently. We propose a PCI allocation scheme for a newly deployed cell that can autonomously select a PCI to increase PCI reuse efficiency by utilizing the levels of received signal strength from neighboring cells. To evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme, simulations have been developed and performed with two scenarios on the coverage types of newly deployed cells. When the proposed scheme is applied, the simulation results show that the number of PCIs required for the operation of the system can be saved so that PCIs can be efficiently reused.

  • Collective cell migration is a fundamental phenomenon observed in various biological processes such as development, wound healing, and cancer metastasis. During the collective migration, cells undergo changes in their phenotypes from those of stable to the migratory state via the process called epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Recent findings in biology and biochemistry have shown that EMT is closely related to the cancer invasion or metastasis, but not much of the correlations in kinematics and physical forces between the neighboring cells are known yet. In this study, we aim to understand the cell migration and stress distribution within the expanding cell cluster. We constructed the in vitro cell cluster on the hydrogel, employed traction force microscopy (TFM) and monolayer stress microscopy (MSM) to visualize the physical forces within the expanding cell monolayer. During the expansion, cells at the cluster edge exhibited enhanced motility and developed focal adhesions that are the essential features of EMT while cells at the core of the cluster maintained the epithelial characteristics. In the aspect of mechanical stress, the cluster edge had the highest traction force of ~90 Pa directed toward the cluster core, which means that cells at the edge actively pull the substrate to make the cluster expansion. The cluster core of the tightly confined cells by neighboring cells had a lower traction force value (~60 Pa) but the highest intercellular normal stress of ~800 Pa because of the accumulation of traction from the edge of the monolayer.

  • The data retention characteristics depending on neighbor cell's threshold voltage (Vt) in a multilevel NAND flash memory is studied. It is found that a Vt shift (${\Delta}Vt$) of the noted cell during a thermal retention test is increased as the number of erase-state (lowest Vt state) cells surrounding the noted cell increases. It is because a charge loss from a floating gate is originated from not only intrinsic mechanism but also lateral electric field between the neighboring cells. From the electric field simulation, we can find that the electric field is increased and it results in the increased charge loss as the device is scaled down.

  • This study proposes a rad o resource management scheme to maximize the performance of the LTE(Long Term Evolution) uplink, using SC-FDMA(Single Carrier-Frequency Division Multiple Access). Rather than the single-cell SC-FDMA system the existing studies are mainly concerning, this study focuses on multi-cell system which needs considering the interaction among cells. Radio resource management is divided into two phases, planning and operation phases. The former is for the master eNB(e-NodeB) to allocate RBs(radio bearer) to eNB, the latter for eNB to assign RBs to the mobiles in the cell. For each phase, an optimization model and greedy algorithm are proposed. Optimization models aim to maximize the system performance while satisfying the constraints for both QoS and RB continuity. The greedy algorithms, like generic ones, move from a solution to a neighboring one having the best objective value among neighboring ones. From the numerous numerical experiments, the performance and characteristics of the algorithms are analyzed. This study is expected to play a volunteering role in radio resource management for the multi-cell SC-FDMA system.

  • The human body loses several billions of cells daily. When cells die in vivo, the corpse of each dead cell is immediately cleared. Specifically, dead cells are efficiently recognized and cleared by multiple types of neighboring phagocytes. Early research on cell death focused more on molecular mechanisms of cell death regulation while the cellular corpses were merely considered cellular debris. However, it has come to light that various biological stimuli following cell death are important for immune regulation. Clearance of normal dead cells occurs silently in immune tolerance. Exogenous or mutated antigens of malignant or infected cells can initiate adaptive immunity, thereby inducing immunogenicity by adjuvant signals. Several pathogens and cancer cells have strategies to limit the adjuvant signals and escape immune surveillance. In this review, we present an overview of the mechanisms of dead cell clearance and its immune regulations.

  • In this paper, we propose a window based resource reservation scheme to minimize an waste bandwidth due to resource reservation in mobile networks. Specially, this scheme decides a proper timing to reserve resource by using the number of movement, which is provided by the differentiated handoff estimation model, among inner regions. In the previous resource reservation scheme[6], it requests a resource reservation to neighboring cells as soon as a mobile host enters or creates into a cell. But, after a proper time based on the number of movements in the differentiated handoff estimation model passes, the proposed scheme requests a resource reservation to neighboring cells. Because of this reason, it can improve resource utilization on mobile networks. And, this scheme differentiates resource reservation according to a request ratio for resource reservation to each neighboring cell. Also, this scheme improves resource reservation acceptance rate and bandwidth utilization.
