  • The purpose of this study was to investigate leisure constraints based on the types of leisure sports activity(individual, partner, and group activities) in order to lead people to participate in and to continue their leisure sports activities. Data were collected from leisure sports participants in Seoul and Kyungki province. A total of 286 respondents were selected using the convenience sampling method. Leisure constraint's sub-dimensions for the respondents were named as facility and environment, negative perception, lack of condition, risk of injury, and lack of time. As the results of this study, first, respondents felt facility and environmental constraint the most and negative perception constraint the lowest. Second, there were differences in negative perception and lack of condition constraints based on the magnitude of participation. Finally, there were differences in facility and environment, negative perception, lack of condition, and risk of injury constraints based on the types of leisure sports activity.

  • Because of operating and ordering vessels over 10,000 TEU, the strategic alliance between liner shipping companies will be diversified and activated more briskly to secure cargo quantities, minimize costs, secure profits, improve service quality and manage stable business. Many of prior studies concerning strategic alliance are carried out to clarify success factors, motives or to explain how to select a good partner for success. But over 70% of strategic alliance has been resulted in failure. Because failures of strategic alliance occur much more frequently than success, negative effect factors in strategic alliance have to be measured and be adapted to changing conditions in the shipping market. To improve negative effect factors, shipping companies should make an effort to establish reliable relationships between partners and suppress claims by clearing off imprecise contract terms. And it is necessary to increase satisfaction of each individuals and minimize complexity occurred due to the exterior relationships for the successful strategic alliance.

  • In this paper, we propose a quadratic discriminant analysis based approach for improving the discriminating strength of weak classifiers based on simple Haar-like features that were used in the Viola-Jones object detection framework. Viola and Jones built a strong classifier using a boosted ensemble of weak classifiers. However, their single threshold (or decision boundary) based weak classifier is sub-optimal and too weak for efficient discrimination between object class and background. A quadratic discriminant analysis based approach is presented which leads to hyper-quadric boundary between the object class and background class, thus realizing multiple thresholds based weak classifiers. Experiments carried out for car detection using 1000 positive and 3000 negative images for training, and 500 positive and 500 negative images for testing show that our method yields higher classification performance with fewer classifiers than single threshold based weak classifiers.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of lifestyle on the perceived value of children in university students. Questionnaires were distributed to 467 university students with questions covering topics including general personal information and characteristics, lifestyle type, and value of children. First, a cluster analysis based on lifestyle showed that the subjects could be categorized into three groups: negative-leisure types, active-achievement types, and affirmative-fidelity types. The negative-leisure type was highly leisure-oriented and showed a negative self-value; the active-achievement type showed a perspective that valued personal and occupational self-development and a high level of labor-oriented value; and the affirmative-fidelity type favored materialism, seeking occupational aptitude and worth and showing a positive self-value. Second, an investigation of the impact of these three lifestyle types on the students' value of children revealed that the active-achievement type group had high level of belief in the necessity of childbirth, the affirmative-fidelity type group highly valued fulfilling an active parent role, and the active-achievement type group were inclined to delay childbirth. Further, the negative-leisure type group wanted the lowest number of children, while the affirmative-fidelity type group wanted the highest number of children. This study reveals that university students' lifestyle does have an effect on their value of children. It is therefore proposed that a value-focused population education for increasing fertility should relate not only to individuals' value of children but also to their broader lifestyle.

  • Saltwater pumping method can be used to mitigate saltwater intrusion in coastal aquifers. However, the saltwater pumping well may discharge large freshwater along with saltwater, thereby wasting precious resources. A double negative barrier was proposed: an inland well to capture freshwater and a saltwater well near the coastline to pump saltwater. A previous study anaylzed effects of double negative barriers in dispersion-dominated coastal aquifers and determined the critical pumping rate at the saltwater well which minimized the saltwater ratio at the freshwater well. However, the study resulted in 1~15% of saltwater ratios, which were too high, for example, for drinking water standards. This study analyzed cases that were considered in the previous study, but for advection-dominated cases, and found that freshwater with sufficiently low saltwater ratios could be developed at the freshwater well. In addition, for optimal groundwater management of a watershed not only the minimum saltwater ratio at the freshwater well but also the least freshwater wasted at the saltwater well must be pursued.

  • Twitter is very popluar with users who desire social interaction as it is a highly effective method of communicating compared to traditional communication platforms; and thus has garnered considerable interest from the academic community. This research reveals how election results can be predicted by the factors of total volume of messages, positive messages and negative messages tweeted about a candidate. Social matrix analysis revealed that the quantity of twitter messages was a strong predictor of election results in the 18th presidential election in Korea. In addition, more positive messages than negative messages about a candidate from twitter users recorded better results in the election. This research found that the total quantity of messages, positive messages, and negative messages as key factors for predicting election result. Future studies should investigate other SNS platforms to discover what is the most effective communication strategy on each platform.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the Kuwaiti Stock Exchange's (KDE) response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the precautions taken by Kuwaiti authorities to protect their citizens and other residents. To achieve this objective, daily data from four different indexes published by the Kuwait Stock Exchange (KSE) for the period between 24 February and 30 June 2020, as well as daily data on the number of people infected with COVID-19, the daily number of recovered people, the daily number of deaths, lockdown days, and days the country was under curfew. The findings show a significant positive association between the daily recovery of persons infected by COVID-19 and all indexes published by the KSE except for the Boursa Kuwait Main Market 50, where the association was positive but insignificant. A negative and significant association was also found between the closure of the country and each of the four indexes. Although the curfew imposed by the Kuwaiti authorities at an early stage of the pandemic appeared to have a negative effect on the four indexes, the level of association was statistically significant only in the cases of the Main Market index and Boursa Kuwait Main Market 50 index.
