Adenomyotic cyst mimicking a congenital Mullerian anomaly: Diagnosis and treatment with laparoscopy

  • A 28-year-old woman presented with a 1-year history of severe progressive dysmenorrhea following suction evacuation and tubal ligation. Sonography showed a bicornuate uterus with hematometra in the left horn. Hysteroscopy ruled out a diagnosis of a congenital Müllerian anomaly, as both ostia appeared normal. Under laparoscopy, a mass was seen on the left fundal region near the insertion of the round ligament, and needle aspiration of a chocolate-colored fluid confirmed the diagnosis of an adenomyotic cyst. The cyst was excised. The patient recovered well and has been symptom-free since surgery. Adenomyotic cyst is a rare entity in young women and must be differentiated from obstructive Müllerian anomaly. Laparoscopy is the preferred minimally invasive modality for managing this rare disorder.

The Effects of Needle Electrode Electrical Stimulation on Cellular Necrosis Blocking the Forebrain after Induction of Ischemia

  • This study was performed to investigate the effects of Needle Electrode Electrical Stimulation(NEES) on ischemia-induced cerebrovascular accidents. After obstruction and reperfusion of arteries in white mice, the amounts of necrosis and inflammation related substances Bax, IL-6, Caspase-3, and COX-2 were measured in neurons of the fore-brain. The following results were obtained. This study used 21 male specific pathogen free(SPF) SD rats, 8 weeks of age and approximately 300g in weight. Each exposed artery was completely occluded with non-absorbent suture thread and kept in that state for 5 minutes. The sutures were then removed to allow reperfusion of blood. Test group is control group(common carotid artery occlusion models), a GI(underwent common carotid artery occlusion), and NEES(underwent NEES after artery occlusion). The GI and NEES groups were given 12, 24, or 48 hours of reperfusion before NEES. NEES device(PG6, ITO, Japan, 9V, current, 2Hz) was used to stimulate the bilateral acupoint ST36 of the SD rats for 30 minutes while they were sedated with 3% isoflurane. An immuno-histochemistry test was done on the forebrains of the GI induced rats. Both Bax and Caspase-3 immuno-reactive cells, related to apoptosis, were greater in the GI than the NEES group. Cox-2 and IL-6 immuno-reactive cells, related to inflammation, were greater in the GI and NEES groups than the control group. We can expect that applying NEES after ischemic CVA is effective for preventing brain cells from being destroyed. And we can conclude NEES should be applyed on early stage of ischemic CVA.

Fabrication of Lignin Nanofibers Using Electrospinning (전기방사를 이용한 리그닌 나노섬유의 제조)

  • Lignin is an abundant natural polymer in the biosphere and second only to cellulose; however, it is under-utilized and considered a waste. In this study, lignin was fabricated into nanofibers via electrospinning. The critical parameters that affected the electrospinnability and morphology of the resulting fibers were examined with the aim to utilize lignin as a resource for a new textile material. Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) was added as a carrier polymer to facilitate the fiber formation of lignin, and the electrospun fibers were deposited on polyester (PET) nonwoven substrate. Eleven lignin/PVA hybrid solutions with a different lignin to PVA mass ratio were prepared and then electrospun to find an optimum concentration. Lignin nano-fibers were electrospun under a variety of conditions such as various feed rates, needle gauges, electric voltage, and tip-to-collector distances in order to find an optimum spinning condition. We found that the optimum concentration for electrospinning was a 5wt% PVA precursor solution upon the addition of lignin with the mass ratio of PVA:lignin=1:5.6. The viscosity of the lignin/PVA hybrid solution was determined as an important parameter that affected the electrospinning process; in addition, the interrelation between the viscosity of hybrid solution and the electrospinnability was examined. The solution viscosity increased with lignin loading, but exhibited a shear thinning behavior beyond a certain concentration that resulted in needle clogging. A steep increase in viscosity was also noted when the electrospun system started to form fibers. Consequently, the viscosity range to produce bead-free lignin nanofibers was revealed. The energy dispersive X-ray analysis confirmed that lignin remained after being transformed into nanofibers. The results indicate the possibility of developing a new fiber material that utilizes biomass with resulting fibers that can be applied to various applications such as filtration to wound dressing.

Breakdown Characteristics of Mixtures of $SF_6$ and Dry air under Uniform and Nonuniform Electric Field ($SF_6$와 Dry air가 혼합된 가스의 평등/불평등 전계에 의한 절연파괴특성 연구)

  • 본 연구는 $SF_6$와 Dry-air(건조공기)가 혼합된 절연매체의 절연 특성과 부분방전 특성 연구를 위하여 기초실험용 쳄버와 70kV급 GIS mock up 을 이용하여 교류전압을 인가하여 실험이 수행되었다. 전자의 경우, Sphere gap 및 Needle/Plate 전극시스템을 이용하여 순수 $SF_6$가스와 Dry-air의 절연내력을 비교하고, 챔버의 압력을 5기압으로 유지한 상태에서 Dry-air와 $SF_6$가스의 혼합비를 변화시키면서 절연내력이 측정되었다. 후자의 경우, 기초실험에서 도출된 $SF_6$가스와 Dry-air의 최적의 혼합비율을 선택한 후, 방전 개시전압과 부분방전 양상을 순수 $SF_6$가스의 결과와 비교 분석하기 위한 실험을 수행하였다. 이를 위하여 GIS 사고의 주요원인이 되는 결함들, 즉 Protrusion, Floating, Free moving particle 들을 인위적으로 모의하여 Mock up 내부에 설치하고 내부 압력을 5기압으로 유지한 상태에서 수행되었다. 전자의 경우, $0.5{\sim}5$ 기압 범위내 에서 Dry-air 압력을 변화시켰을 때 절연내력은 전극시스템에 무관하게 순수 $SF_6$가스의 결과치의 $40{\sim}50%$정도이다. 또한 챔버 압력이 5기압일 경우, Needle/Plate 전극을 이용했을 경우, Dry-air 가 80% 혼합된 절연매체는 순수 $SF_6$가스 절연내력의 80%정도이다. 후자의 경우, 인가전압을 고정 시켰을 때, 부분방전 패턴과 방전크기는, 순수 $SF_6$가스와 Dry-air 가 80% 혼합된 절연매체는 동일한 패턴과 방전크기를 나타내고 있다. 이러한 결과를 근거로, 가스 압력이 5기압에서 운전되는 전력기기의 절연 매체로서 혼합가스를 사용할 경우, $SF_6$가스와 Dry-air의 혼합비는 2:8정도가 적절한 것으로 제안한다.

Comparison of anxiety and pain perceived with conventional and computerized local anesthesia delivery systems for different stages of anesthesia delivery in maxillary and mandibular nerve blocks

  • Background: Fear of local anesthesia (LA) is a significant impediment to dental care as many patients delay or avoid treatment to avert pain. Computer-controlled local anesthetic delivery system (CCLAD), with constant and controlled rate of flow, present a painless alternative. The present study aimed to compare anxiety and pain perceived with conventional and computerized systems, for different stages of anesthesia delivery when administering various nerve blocks. Methods: One hundred patients requiring bilateral LA participated in the study. One side was anesthetized using one system and the contralateral side was anesthetized using the other, in two separate appointments. Patients assigned anxiety scores on a 5-point scale and used the visual analogue scale (VAS) for pain determination at needle insertion, during delivery of anesthetic solution, immediately after injection, and at the end of the periodontal procedure. Each patient's preference for the delivery system of future injections was also recorded. Results: Patients reported significantly lower anxiety levels with CCLAD compared to the syringe. Significantly lower mean VAS scores for anesthesia deposition, pain immediately after, and at the end of the periodontal procedure were also noted. However, pain at needle insertion was comparable between the two systems, with no statistical significance. Overall, 64.4% patients preferred CCLAD for future anesthesia. Conclusion: Lower pain perceived with CCLAD and higher preference for the system suggest that CCLAD should replace conventional syringes to allow pain-free dental treatment.

Biological Activities of the Vaporized Liquid of Water-boiled Pine Needle (솔잎 열수 증류액의 생리활성 효과)

  • This study was performed to determine the antioxidative, antimutagenic, and anticancer effects of vaporized liquid of water-boiled pine needle(VLP) using DPPH free radical donating method, Ames test, and cytotoxicity. VLP showed the highest electron donating activities $(18.4\;{\mu}L)$. The inhibition rate of VLP $(200\;{\mu}L/plate)$ in the Salmonella. typhimurium TA100 strain showed $45.9\%$ inhibition against the mutagenesis induced by MNNG. In addition, the suppression of with same concentration of VLP in the S. typhimurium TA100 strains showed $85.5\%$ inhibition against 4NQO, respectively. The suppressions under the same condition against Trp-P-1 in the TA98 and TA100 strains were $91.0\%$ and $62.1\%$, respectively. The cytotoxic effects of VLP against the cell lines with human lung carcinoma (A549), human hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2) , human gastric carcinoma (AGS), human breast adenocarcinoma (MCF-7) and human cervical adenocarcinoma (HeLa) were inhibited with increase of the VLP concentration. The treatment of $50\;{\mu}L/well$ VLP showed strong cytotoxicities of $78.7\%,\;90.3\%,\;90.8\%,\;62.3\%$ and $93.7\%$ against A549, HepG2, AGS, MCF-7 and HeLa, respectively.

The sutures were then removed to allow reperfusion of blood. Test group is control group for comparison with the common carotid artery occlusion models, a GI group that underwent common carotid artery occlusion, and a needle electrode electrical stimulation (NEES) group that underwent NEES after artery occlusion. The GI and NEES groups were given 12, 24, or 48 hours of reperfusion before NEES. NEES device (PG6, ITO, Japan, 9V, current, 2Hz) was used to stimulate the right and left acupoint ST36 of the SD rats for 30 minutes while they were sedated with 3% isoflurane. An immunohistochemistry test was done on the forebrains of the GI induced rats. All the data collected from this study was symbolized and analyzed using a statistics processing program (SPSS 12.0K/PC). The level of significance was set at ${\alpha}$=0.05 and a T-TEST analysis was used to find out the effects of treatment on each of the groups: the normal group, the CVA induced group, and the treatment after CVA induction group. Results : Both PARP and C-fos immuno-reactive cells, related to apoptosis, were greater in the GI groups than the NEES group. Caspase and IL-6 immuno-reactive cells, related to inflammation, were greater in the GI and NEES groups than the control group. Conclusions : This research was conducted to study the effects of NEES on CVA due to ischemia. Occlusion and reperfusion was performed on the common carotid arteries of white rats, after which amounts of substances related to neuron necrosis and inflammation - PARP, IL-6, Caspase-3, and C-fos - were measured in the Hippocampus

Investigation on Growth Characteristic of ZnO Nanostructure with Various O2 Pressures by Thermal Evaporation Process (열증착법으로 성장된 ZnO 나노구조물의 산소유량 변화에 대한 성장 변화)

  • ZnO nanostructures were developed on a Si (100) substrate from powder mixture of ZnO and 5 mol% Pd (ZP-5) as reactants by ${\times}$ sccm oxygen pressures(x= 0, 10, 20, 40). DTA (differential thermal analysis) result shows the Pd(5 mol%)+ZnO mixtured powder(PZ-5) is easily evaporated than pure ZnO powder. The PZ-5 mixtured powder was characterized by DTA to determine the thermal decomposition which was found to be at $800^{\circ}C$, $1,100^{\circ}C$. Weight loss(%) and ICP (inductively coupled plasma) analysis reveal that Zn vaporization is decreased by increased oxygen pressures from the PZ-5 at $1,100^{\circ}C$ for 30 mins. Needle-like ZnO nanostructures array developed from 10 sccm oxygen pressure, was well aligned vertically on the Si substrate at $1,100^{\circ}C$ for 30 mins. The lengths of the Needle-like ZnO nanostructures is about 2 ${\mu}m$ with diameters of about 65 nm. The developed ZnO nanostructures exhibited growth direction along [001] with defect-free high crystallinity. It is considered that Zn vaporization is responsible for the growth of Needle-like ZnO nanostructures by controlling the oxygen pressures. The photoluminescence spectra of ZnO nanostructures exhibited stronger 376.7 nm NBE (near band-edge emission) peak and 529.3 nm DLE (deep level energy) peak.

Quality Characteristics of Ogapiju Prepared by Different Raw Materials (원료 첨가를 달리한 오가피주의 품질 특성)

  • Quality characteristics of ogapiju prepared by adding different raw materials such as Acanthopanax(0, 0.1, 0.25, 0.5%), Ganoderma lucidum(0, 0.05%), pine needle (0, 0.05%), and red ginseng(0, 0.05%) were evaluated by chemical analyses and sensory evaluation. Total organic acid contents of samples containing ogapi and other medicinal herbs were higher than that of control group. Major free amino acid was histidine. Contents of total amino acid and free sugar were highest in sample C (Acanthopanax 0.1, G. lucidum 0.05, pine needle 0.50, red ginseng 0.05%). In each sample 31-49 volatile components were identified by solid-phase microextraction method, and 42 components were detected by sniff-test using GC-olfactometry. Ogapiju showed higher content of ${\alpha}-copaene$ than control group ${\alpha}-Pinene$, camphene, ${\beta}-pinene$, sabinene, ${\alpha}-terpinene,\;{\gamma}-terpinene$, p-cymene, terpinolene, ${\alpha}-thujone,\;{\beta}-thujone,\;{\alpha}-terpineol$, carvone, and ${\beta}-ionone$ were not identified in control group. Volatile composition of ogapiju was characterized by higher amount of terpenoids. Green and herbaceous note was stronger in ogapiju than control group. Sensory evaluation indicated that good taste and palatability were highest in sample C.
