  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relation between NEAP (net rate of endogenous noncarbonic acid production) from dietary potassium and protein intakes, and bone mineral density and urinary deoxypyridinoline (DPD) in Korean women. The subjects were 276 women aged $18\sim81$, and they were asked about general characteristics and nutrient intake using 24-hr recall method. Also, their bone mineral density of spine and femoral neck were measured using DEXA. Urinary DPD analysis was done in 106 postmenopausal women. The average energy, protein and potassium intake were 1503.0 kcal, 57.7 g and 60.8 mEq, respectively. Mean NEAP [54.5$\times${protein intake (g)/potassium intake (mEq)}-10.2] was 44.6. NEAP showed a significantly negative correlation with spine bone mineral density of the subjects after controlling for confounding factors (age, height and weight) (p<0.05). The lowest quartile of protein intake had the highest spine bone mineral density after controlling for confounding factors (p<0.05). There was no significant correlation between urinary DPD and calculated NEAP. These results provided positive relation between a ratio of lower protein to higher potassium dietary intake and bone mineral density.

  • This study was designed to find an appropriate biomaterial to proliferate Schwann cell (SC). Poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) films mixed with demineralized bone particle (DBP), small intestine submucosa (SIS), and silk were fabricated by a solvent casting method. Analysis of MTT, SEM and RT-PCR were performed to confirm adhesion and proliferation of SC. Contact angle of films was assayed for hydrophilicity of films. We confirmed that PLGA/DBP 20% film showed higher hydrophilicity, promoted adhesion and proliferation of SC than other films. It was concluded that PLGA/DBP film can be applied for the scaffold biomaterials for the regeneration of central nerve system.

  • Hydroxyapatite has osteoconductivity, biocompatibility and noninflammatory, and it has been used clinically as artificial bone. In this study, we prepared hydroxyapatite/poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) scaffolds using 0, 10, 20, 40 and 60 wt% of hydroxyapatite. We analyzed compressive strength, SEM analysis and FTIR for mechanical property of 3D hydroxyapatite/PLGA scaffolds. For biocompatibility tests, cell proliferation and viability were measured via MTT assay and SEM. We analyzed RT-PCR, FACS, histology (H&E, ED-1) for anti-inflammatory effect. This study showed that hydroxyapatite hybrid scaffolds have low inflammatory reaction compared with the PLGA. This result has a potential for the application of artificial bone graft material.

  • Satae cheon, a tributary of the Suip cheon in Yanggu, Gangwon province, is an international river extended to North Korea. Most of drainage basin area of the river was the fierce battle field during the Korean War(1950-1953) and hard to access as it located between the MDL(Military Demarcation Line) and the CCZ(Civilian Control Zone: about 10km south from MDL). By the restriction of access to the sites, most of natural landscape have been well conserved except limited use for military activities. Even the landfoms in that area were not studied, except the government's heritage reports. Satae Cheon's channel follows the Imdang fault line(N-S) to Satae-ri and flow to west to the Dutayeon area. The river meanders along geological structure or weak line at the Dutayeon area. The meandering channel was shorten by the meander cut which linked the thalweg line of meander loop ant the meander neck. As a result of this cut, the river cliff formed by the Satae cheon became the part of newly formed channel bed and the S-forms are formed. After the channel route stabilized, channel incised the rock with large potholes and undulating walls were formed. The channel width changes from 1m to 10m with restriction of the undulating walls, so this part can be regarded as inner channel or inner gorge. From the point of planar forms it also can be slot-type canyon.

  • Object Although Taeeum and Soyang constitutional types have bigger body shapes and higher body mass index values than those with the Soeum, the relationship between the Sasang constitutional type and bone mass density is controversial and the association of osteopenia and osteoporosis remains unknown. Therefore, we investigated the relationship between bone mineral density, osteopenia, and osteoporosis according to Sasang constitutional type. Methods A total of 2,508 participants were included in this study. Among the study participants, 1,396 had Taeeum type, 276 had Soeum type, and 836 had Soyang type, respectively. The relationships to bone mass density, osteopenia, and osteoporosis in those with Sasang constitutional type were estimated using logistic and linear regression models. Results Bone mass density was significantly higher in the order of Taeeum, Soyang, and Soeum group (p < 0.01). Soeum group in comparison with Taeeum or Soyang group was significantly associated with a high odds ratio for osteopenia and osteoporosis except in the hip and femoral neck in the comparison of Taeeum and Soeum group (p < 0.01). Moreover, the bone mass density of Soeum group decreased more rapidly as the age increased when compared with Taeeum and Soyang group. Conclusions Our findings may contribute to the early prevention and management of high-risk individuals with poor bone mass density, osteopenia, and osteoporosis using Sasang constitution medicine.

  • In order to find out more effective countermeasures against growth damage of paddy rice due to the irrigation of livestock waste water, pot experiments were carried out in 1985 and 1986. Experiment I conducted in 1985 was to find out the effects of irrigation control and application of ameliorators to paddy soil with irrigation of animal waste water. Experiment II conducted in 1986 was to find out the amounts of wollastonite to be applied. The results obtained were as follows. Experiment I ; Rice yields were higher in the treatment of continuously submersion until harvest than in that of intermittent irrigation. The yield was also increased with the application of soil ameliorators and it showed higher increase in the treatment of zeolite and wollastonite. Nitrogen contents in plant were increased with the nitrogen application and more amounts of irrigation of waste water, but they were considerably decreased with the application of soil ameliorators. Experiment II ; Rice yields were increased with the application of wollastonite and the optimum level of wollastonite for maximum yield in condition of 3.0 g/pot of nitrogen application was belived to be 60g/pot. The increment of yield by the application of wollastinte was though to be due to increase of No. of grains per panicle and ripening ratio. Steriled neck occurred by rice disease such as rice blast was increased with increasing the amounts of nitrogen application and nitrogen contained in irrigated waste water but that was remarkably decreased with the application of wollastonite.
