  • This paper treats an adaptive finite-element method for the viscous compressible flow governed by Navier-Stokes equations in two dimensions. The numerical algorithm is the two-step Taylor-Galerkin mettled using unstructured triangular grids. To increase accuracy and stability, combined moving node method and grid refinement method have been used for grid adaption. Validation of the present algorithm has been made by comparing the present computational results with the existing experimental data and other numerical solutions. Four benchmark problems are solved for demonstration of the present numerical approach. They include a subsonic flow over a flat plate, the Carter flat plate problem, a laminar shock-boundary layer interaction. and finally a laminar flow around NACA0012 airfoil at zero angle of attack and free stream Mach number of 0.85. The results indicates that the present adaptive triangular grid method is accurate and useful for laminar viscous flow calculations.

  • The delta-formulation of the Navier-Stokes equations has been popularly used in the aerodynamics area. Implicit algorithm can be easily implemented in that by using Taylor series expansion. This formulation is extended for an unsteady analysis by using a dual-time integration. In the meanwhile, the incompressible flows with heat transfers which occur in the area of thermo-hydraulics have been solved by a segregated algorithm such as the SIMPLE method, where each equation is discretised by using an under-relaxed deferred correction method and solved sequentially. In this study, the dual-time delta formulation is implemented in the segregated Navier-Stokes solver which is based on the collocated cell-centerd scheme with un unstructured mesh FVM. The pressure correction equation is derived by the SIMPLE method. From this study, it was found that the Euler dual-time method in the delta formulation can be combined with the SIMPLE method.

  • To predict the transonic buffet onset for a supercritical airfoil with shock-boundary layer interactions, a practical steady approach has been proposed. In this study, it is assumed that the airfoil flow is steady even when buffet onset occurs. Steady Navier-Stokes computations are performed on the supercritical airfoil. Using the aerodynamic parameters calculated from Navier-Stokes solver, various steady approaches for predicting buffet onset are discussed. Among the various steady approaches considered in this study, Thomas' criterion based on Navier-Stokes computation has shown to be the most appropriate indicator of identifying the buffet onset for a supercritical airfoil with shock-boundary layer interactions. Good agreements have been obtained compared with the results of unsteady transonic wind tunnel tests. The present method is shown to be reliable and useful for transonic buffet onset for a supercritical airfoil with shock-boundary layer interactions in terms of practical engineering viewpoint.

  • General classes of boundary-pressure-driven flows of incompressible Newtonian fluids in threedimensional (3D) channels and in 3D pipes with known steady laminar realizations are investigated respectively. The characteristic physical and geometrical quantities of the flows are subsumed in the kinetic Reynolds number Re and a parameter $\psi$, which involves the energetic ratio and the directions of the boundary-driven part and the pressure-driven part of the laminar flow. The solution of non-stationary dimension-free Navier-Stokes equations is sought in the form $\underline{u}=u_{L}+U,\;where\;u_{L}$ is the scaled laminar velocity and periodical conditions are prescribed for U in the unbounded directions. The objects of our numerical investigations are autonomous systems (S) of ordinary differential equations for the time-dependent coefficients of the spatial Stokes eigenfunction, where these systems (S) were received by application of the Galerkin-method to the dimension-free Navier-Stokes equations for u.

  • The main objective of the research is to develop a research code solving transient incompressible Navier-Stokes equation. In this research code, Adams-Bashforth method was applied to the convective terms of the navier stokes equation and the splitted equations were discretized spatially by finite element methods to solve the complex geometry problems easily. To reduce the divergence on the boundaries of pressure poisson equation due to the unsuitable pressure boundary conditions, multi step approximation pressure boundary conditions derived from the boundary linear momentum equations were used. Simulations of Lid Driven Flow and Flow over Cylinder were conducted to prove the accuracy by means of the comparison with results of the previous workers.

  • The non-linear k-.epsilon. model developed by Speziale was employed for the prediction of developing turbulent flow in a square duct. The numerical procedure incorporated a finite volume method using a strong conservation form of the partially-parabolized Navier-Stokes equation. Results of the calculation were compared with available experimental data on the mean velocity field and turbulent kinetic energy, and was found to be in favorable agreement.

  • The flow induced by the oscillatory motion of a solid body is important in a number of practical problems. As the solid boundary oscillates harmonically, there is steady streaming motion invoked by the Reynolds stresses, which could cause extensive migration of the fluid during a period of fluid motion. We here analyzed the flow in a square cavity with an oscillating top wall for the parameters which make the time derivatives and the convective terms equally important in the entire cavity flow. The full Navier-Stokes equations are solved by the second-order time accurate Momentum Coupling Method which is devised by the authors. The particular numerical scheme does not need subiteration at each time step which is usually a required process to calculate the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The effect of two parameters, the Reynolds number and the frequency parameter, on the oscillatory flow has been investigated.

  • This study concentrates on the upwind schemes for convergence acceleration of the multigrid method for the Navier-Stokes equations. Comparative study of the upwind schemes in the Fourier space has been performed to identify why the second-order upwind scheme with enlarged stencil can be preconditioned better than the classical second-order upwind scheme. The full-coarsening multigrid method with implicit preconditioned multistage scheme has been implemented for verification of analysis. Numerical simulations on the inviscid and turbulent flows with the Spalart-Allmaras turbulent model have been performed. The results showed consistent trend with the analysis.

  • The free-surface flow is simulated to make clear the viscous interaction of stem waves and the sub-breaking phenomena around a high speed vehicle. The Navier-Stokes equation is solved by a finite difference method where the body-fitted coordinate system, the wall function and the triple-grid system are invoked They are applied to study precisely on the stem flow of S-103 as to which extensive experimental data are available. Computations are extended to the submerged revolutional body. The numerical result shows that the gradient of M/Us is greatly influenced by the submerged depth And the stem wave is influenced by the separation due to the bow wave.
