An hydrocarbon alcohol and steroids were isolated from the hexane fraction of the extract from the seeds of Phaseolus radiatus L. And also a flavonoid was identified from the ethyl acetate and butanol fraction. The structure of the obtained compound were elucidated by spectroscopic methods (UV, IR, mass and NMR) and their physicochemical properties. As the results, triacontanol, stigmasterol, ${\beta}-sitosterol$ and vitexin were identified.
Twelve species of Ipomoea were investigated for allelopathic behavior. Seed extracts of I. quamoclit, I. nil and I. pes-tigridis showed significant allelopathy over germination of other seeds. Investigation on seed extracts of I. quamoclit, revealed the presence of several phytochemical components viz., n-triacontanol, sitosterol, stigmasterol, ${\alpha}-amyrin$, taraxerone, taraxerol, erythrodiol, cucurbitacin-G. Seed fat of twelve species were also analyzed.

Silymarin is the standardized extract from Silybum marianum which consists mainly of flavonoids and polyphenols. It is highly regarded for its hepatoprotective ability. Silybin B is a flavonolignan and one of the active components of silymarin. The content of silybin B in various parts of S. marianum was analyzed by HPLC-UV. Results show that the extract of seeds contain the highest amount of silybin B (7.434 mg/g DW). The petioles of S. marianum showed a low content of silybin B. This study revealed that seeds of S. marianum contain high amount of silybin B and could be a good source of the compound.
This experiment was held to identify the germination feature of Papaver radicatum var. pseudoradicatum which has high economical value. Seeds were collected in the Mt. Changbai in China. To eliminate dormancy of the seeds, chilling treatment were carried out in the $5^{\circ}C$ refrigerator. 30 days, 60 days, 90 days, 120 days of chilling treatments were taken. After being Treated, seeds were under 15, 20, $25^{\circ}C$ of temperature and light, dark conditions respectively to see the differences in germination. Within many features, germination ratio of seeds and germination period were investigated. Also, features related to early growth were checked through the closer look into acrospire, growth of cotyledon of young plant. Over 30 days of chilling treatment was all effective. Especially, 120 days of chilling treatment was most effective. The seeds germinated well in the light conditions. 120 days of chilling treatment, $15^{\circ}C$, light conditions were found to be most effective conditions as 54.5% of the seeds germinated. The germination period was 4.29 days. 30 days after germinating, length of the aerial part had been 1.90 cm. But after 45 days, the length grew rapidly to 4.58 cm. Fresh weight of scales plant was also increased dramatically after 45 days. Therefore, transporting the plant 45 days after seeding judged to be good.
Background: Panax ginseng Meyer (Araliaceae) is a highly valued medicinal plant in Asian regions, especially in Korea, China, and Japan. Chemical and biological studies on P. ginseng have focused primarily on its roots, whereas the seeds remain poorly understood. This study explores the phytochemical and biological properties of compounds from P. ginseng seeds. Methods: P. ginseng seeds were extracted with methanol, and 16 compounds were isolated using various chromatographic methods. The chemical structures of the isolates were determined by spectroscopic data. Antiinflammatory activities were evaluated for triterpene and steroidal saponins using lipopolysaccharide-stimulated RAW264.7 macrophages and THP-1 monocyte leukemia cells. Results: Phytochemical investigation of P. ginseng seeds led to the isolation of a novel triterpene saponin, pseudoginsenoside RT8, along with 15 known compounds. Pseudoginsenoside RT8 exhibited more potent antiinflammatory activity than the other saponins, attenuating lipopolysaccharide-mediated induction of proinflammatory genes such as interleukin-1β, interleukin-6, inducible nitric oxide synthase, cyclooxygenase-2, and matrix metalloproteinase-9, and suppressed reactive oxygen species and nitric oxide generation in a dose-dependent manner. Conclusion: These findings indicate that pseudoginsenoside RT8 has a pharmaceutical potential as an antiinflammatory agent and that P. ginseng seeds are a good natural source for discovering novel bioactive molecules.
We previously reported the potential of Senna tora L. seeds fermented by Lactobacillus casei (FSL) as a laxative agent in a loperamide-induced constipation rat model. Here, we examine the mechanism of action of FSL and its bioactive compound, revealed herein, on loperamide-induced constipation Sprague Dawley rat model. We identified the compound aurantio-obtusin (AO) using HPLC quantitative analysis. Rats were randomly assigned to six experimental groups (eight rats each)-normal and constipated groups (loperamide, FSL [100, 300, 500 mg/kg], and AO [1 mg/kg]). The FSL and AO-treated group showed an increase in the frequency, amount, and water content of feces in the constipated rat. Moreover, FSL and AO increased the intestinal transit speed in the constipated rat. Histological analysis revealed that FSL and AO recovered the intestinal mucus, the number of goblet cells, as well as thickness of the mucosa layer and muscle. Furthermore, the protein levels of the muscarinic acetylcholine receptor M3, which is involved in intestine contraction, were recovered in the FSL and AO-treated group. Its downstream signaling pathway (p-protein kinase C) was recovered by FSL and AO treatment. In conclusion, fermentation of S. tora L. seeds increases AO, which improves intestinal function, indicating that FSL is effective for treating constipation.

Phytochemical constituents were isolated from the seeds of tartary buckwheat (Fagopyrum tataricum) by open column chromatography. Their structures were elucidated as ${\beta}$-sitosterol (1), ${\beta}$-sitosterol-3-O-glucoside (2), oleanolic acid (3), kaempferol (4), quercetin (5), kaempferol-3-O-rutinoside (6), and quercetin-3-O-rutinoside (7) on the basis of spectroscopic analysis including $^1H$-, $^{13}C$-NMR, and MS. To our knowledge, oleanolic acid (3) has been isolated for the first time from the seeds of Fagopyrum species. The total contents of compounds 4 - 7 were 0.500 mg/g in Daesan maemil, 0.312 mg/g in Yangjul maemil, and 2.185 mg/g in tartary buckwheat.
In the course of a searching natural antifungal compounds from plant seeds, we found that the methanol extract of Psoralea corylifolia seeds showed potent control efficacy against tomato late blight caused by Phytophthora infestans and wheat leaf rust Puccinia recondita. Under bioassay-guided purification, we isolated two furanocoumarins, psoralen and isopsoralen, with anti-oomycete activity against P. infestans. By 1-day protective application, both compounds strongly reduced the disease development of P. infestans on tomato seedlings, but hardly controlled development of leaf rust on wheat seedlings. This is the first report on the anti-oomycete activity of P. corylifolia as well as that of psoralen and isopsoralen.
The chloroform extract of the seeds of Carica papaya has been screened for the hormonal properties using ovariectomized female rats for estrogenicity, estrogen primed immature rats for progestogenicity and castrated adult male rats for androgenicity. The results revealed that the extract lacks progestogenicity and androgenicity as evident from the failure of the extract treated animals to mimic progestogen and androgen related changes in the target tissues. The increased weight of vagina and uterus, open status of vagina, cornified and epithelial cells in the vaginal smears and hypertrophy in the uterine epithelium, endometrium and stroma with increased glycogen and sialic acid content in the uterus of the chloroform extract treated animals, which are comparable to those of the ovariectomized estrogen treated animals, suggest that the chloroform extract possesses mild estrogenic activity.

To developed natural food preservatives, ethanol and water extracts were prepared from the defatted camellia(Camellia japonica L.) seeds. Antimicrobial activities were examined against 14 microorganisms which were food borne pathogens and/or food poisoning microorganisms and food-related bacteria and yeasts. Ethanol extract showed antimicrobial activities against several microorganisms tested, but not on lactic acid bactria. Especially, minimum inhibitory concentrations(MIC) for yeasts were as low as 1mg/ml. Water extract exhibited antimicrobial activities for the yeasts tested, but almost bacteria were not observed. The ethanol extract was fractionated in the order of hexane, chloroform, ethylaetate and butanol fractions to test antimicrobial activity. The strongest activity for the tested yeasts were found in the butanol fractions, but bacteria were chloroform fraction. Hansenula anomala treated with ethanol were observed by scanning electron micrograph, and the results exhibited morphological changes, including the irregularly contracted cell surface and expanded ellipsoidal shape.
