One of the most probable reason of the apex seal damage in IR-2500 industrial Wankel (rotary) engine was believed to be the engine detonation. Both analytical and experimental studies were made with a view th find out engine detonation pressure. The stagnation detonation pressure $p_{03}$' was estimated based on the data from IR-2500 engine detonation tests, such as engine firing pressure, state of fresh charge at BDC and polytropic compression exponent. The estimated stagnation detonation pressure for the natural gas fueled IR-2500 engine was in excess of 3,700 psia. With natural gas liquid added to the natural gas the octane value of the fuel was lowered, thus, making the engine more prone to detonate. The estimated detonation pressure for the case with the mixed fuel was about 3,400 psia which was sufficiently high to break the apex seal. The subsequent engine lab tests performed on two identical engines with sole difference in the apex seal thickness between the two engines proved that the engine knock, in fact, was the villain of the apex seal failure.ilure.

This paper represents an analysis of the economic impact of firing natural gas/diesel and natural gas/by-product oil mixtures in diesel engine power plants. The objects of analysis is a power plant with electricity generation capacity (300 kW). Using performance data of original diesel engines, the fuel consumption characteristics of the duel fuel engines were simulated. Then, economic assessment was carried out using the performance data and the net present value method. A special focus was given to the evaluation of fuel cost saving when firing natural gas/diesel and natural gas/by-product oil mixtures instead of the pure diesel firing case. Analyses were performed by assuming fuel price changes in the market as well as by using current prices. The analysis results showed that co-firing of natural gas/diesel and natural gas/by-product oil would provide considerable fuel cost saving, leading to meaningful economic benefits.

Natural gas is one of the most promising alternatives to gasoline and diesel fuels because of its high thermal efficiency and lower harmful emissions, including $CO_2$. Although the high octane value of natural gas increases engine output and efficiency due to the high compression ratio, this fuel is prone to such difficulties as a narrow limit of inflammability and a slow combustion speed in the lean burn operation domain, leading to unstable combustion and higher emissions of harmful exhaust gases. Hydrogen blended with natural gas can extend the lean burn limit while maintaining stable, efficient combustion and achieving lower NOx, hydrocarbon and green house gas emissions. In this study, the effect of hydrogen addition on an engine performance and NOx emission characteristics was investigated in a heavy duty natural gas engine. The results showed that thermal efficiency was increased and NOx emissions were reduced due to the expansion of lean operation range under stable operation. NOx emission can be significantly reduced with the retard of spark advance timing.

Adding hydrogen gas in natural gas leads to stable combustion in internal combustion engine and its performances rely on compression ratio. To analyze the effects of compression ratio and rate of hydrogen addition on the engine performance, the characteristics of overall engine performance including emission were investigated by using the medium duty natural gas fueled engine. As results, it was found that compression ratio occurred knock was nearby compression ratio, $\varepsilon$=14 for the case that hydrogen was enriched in the natural gas fueled engine. But slight knock was occurred at $\varepsilon$=14.7 in the case of neat natural gas. Also HC and $CO_2$ were reduced around 80% and 20% respectively when the rate of hydrogen addition was increased to 50% and compression ratio from $\varepsilon$=13 to $\varepsilon$=14.7.

For natural gas and LPG fuel, measurements on the concentrations of individual exhaust hydrocarbon species have been made as a function of air-fuel ratio in a 2-liter four-cylinder engine using a gas chromatography. NMHC in addition to the species of HC, other emissions such as CO$_2$, CO and NOx were examined for natural gas and LPG at 1800rpm far two compression ratios (8.6 and 10.6). Fuel conversion efficiencies were also investigated together with emissions to study the effect of engine parameters on the combustion performances in gas engines especially under the lean bum conditions. It was found that CO$_2$ emission decreased with smaller C value of fuel, leaner mixture strength and the higher compression ratio. HC emissions from LPG engine consisted primarily of propane (larger 60%), ethylene and propylene, while main emissions from natural gas were mothane (larger than 60%), ethane, ethylene and propane on the average. The natural gas was proved to give the less ozone formation than LPG fuel. This was accomplished by reducing the emissions of propylene, which has relatively high MIR factor, and propane that originally has large portion of LPG. In addition, natural gas shows a benefit in other emissions (i.e. NMHC,NOx, CO$_2$and CO), SR and BSR values except fuel conversion efficiency.
Compressed natural gas has good potential for alternative vehicle fuel due to its economical and clean characteristics. However, the composition of natural gas based on production location is known to affect performance and emissions of CNG engine. Thus, the objective of this paper is to clarify the effect of fuel composition on combustion and emissions of CNG engine. This paper presents combustion characteristics obtained from running a 2.5L, 4-cylinder CNG engine retrofitted IDI diesel engine with engine dynamometer. BSFC, emissions, fuel consumption and combustion pressure were measured under steady state operating conditions especially at partial load for CNG engine. Based on the experimental results, we found that CNG composition affects engine performance, fuel conversion efficiency and burning rate.
Natural gas is attracting attention as an alternative to existing fossil fuels. Natural gas has a high octane number. Therefore, knocking does not occur even if the compression ratio is increased, so that the thermal efficiency and the output can be improved. And it is relatively easy to apply the natural gas supply system to the internal combustion engine hardware system. In this study, a gasoline direct injection turbo engine was converted into a natural gas port injection type turbo engine. Therefore, the combustion and performance of the engine are measured and compared comprehensively in the region where the turbo operates.
Compressed natural gas has a high octane number and low particulate emission characteristics as compared with petroleum-based fuels, so it can respond to exhaust gas regulations positively. A natural gas engine has been introduced to improve the quality of the atmosphere, a diversity of fuel, a stable supply, and it has widely been used in city buses and garbage trucks. Recently, the natural gas engine has received attention by overcoming the disadvantage of the theoretical air-fuel ratio method through the development of EGR cooler and engine parts with the development of LP-EGR technology. In this study, we try to develop the cogeneration system that can simultaneously generate electric power and heat by remodeling the gasoline engine to the mixer type CNG engine. As a result, it was able to reduce the NOx (approximately 77%) compared to the diesel engines with same displacement.

Natural gas, a fossil fuel contained mostly of methane, is one of the cleanest alternative fuels. It can be used in the form of compressed gas(CNG) or liquefied natural gas(LNG) to cars and trucks. And, dedicated natural gas vehicles are designed to run on natural gas only, while Bi-fuel vehicles can also run on gasoline or CNG, especially, bi-fuel can be defined as the simultaneous combustion of two fuels. In this study, converted gasoline marine system to CNG Bi-fuel system which is made up of injector, regulator, tank and ECU is converted. And estimated the fuel system and engine power compared the result with gasoline engine is estimated. As a result, CNG engine shows low exhaust emissions but maxium power is 7% reduced compared to gasoline engine.
A three-way catalyst system of a natural gas vehicle (NGV) has characteristics of higher fuel consumption and higher thermal load than a lean-bum catalyst system. To meet stringent emission standards in the future, NGV with the lean-bum engine may need a catalyst system to reduce the amounts of HC, CO and NOx emission, although natural gas system has low emission characteristics. We conducted experiments to evaluate the conversion efficiency of the NOx reduction catalyst for the lean-burn natural gas engine. The NOx reduction catalysts were prepared with the ${\gamma}-Al_{2}O_3$ washcoat including Ba based on Pt, Pd and Rh precious metal. In the experiments, effective parameters were space velocity, spike duration of the rich condition, and the temperature of flowing model gas. From the results of the experiments, we found that the temperature for maximum NOx reduction was around $450^{\circ}C$, and the space velocity for optimum NOx reduction was around $30,000\;h^{-1}$ And we developed an evaluation model of the NOx reduction catalyst to evaluate the conversion performance of each other catalysts.
