  • In this study, we investigated the application of oriental history of mathematics in school mathematics teaching. We set up three study problems to achieve this purpose. First, we analyze the middle and high school mathematics textbooks and auxiliary books. Second, we survey the mathematics teacher's knowledge and degree of application on history of mathematics. Third, we develop the teaching and learning materials on oriental history of mathematics. We performed three study-methods to settle above study problem. First, we analyzed 24 textbooks and auxiliary books for study problem 1. There were 6 middle school mathematics textbooks and 6 auxiliary books and also 6 high school mathematics textbooks and 6 auxiliary books. We categorized the contents into "anecdote", "systematization", "application of problem", "expansibility of thought", and "comparative of the contents". Second, we surveyed the 78 mathematics teachers's knowledge and degree of application using questionnaire about knowledge and application on history of mathematics. The questionnaire was made up of four types of question; the effect of material about history of mathematics, the understanding of western history of mathematics, the understanding of oriental history of mathematics; the direction of development of teaching material. Third, we exemplified the teaching and learning materials about three categories: "anecdote", "comparative of the contents".

  • This paper initiates an effort to look at "South Korean" medicine as perhaps distinct from "Korean" medicine, focusing specifically on the possibility of offering a post-colonial history of medicine. As such, the paper looks at the formation of the NMC (National Medical Center) in Seoul in 1958 (1958-1963, 1963-1968, 1968-1971) by a consortium of European actors--Denmark, Sweden, and Norway--invested in developing new forms of international assistance after the Korean War. Rather than take a firm stance, the paper ultimately suggests that the role of these actors in formative South Korean institutions was constitutive, and perhaps requires much more examination in the future.

  • This research aimed for revealing social interaction-based environmental learning elements at the natural history museum. First, we carried out a survey of the perceptual change about 'the environment' concept. It was for confirming whether environmental learning occurred in visiting. Second, we found environmental learning elements through analyzing dialogues among small group members during looking around the museum. Social interaction-based environmental learning elements were classified into five; knowledge, affection, value, skill, behaviour. Each environmental learning element included several sub-elements, so we revealed totally 9 environmental learning sub-elements. By results, we said characteristics and possibility of the natural history museum as an informal environmental educational institution. It is meaningful for extending areas of environmental education.

  • The study was designed to analyze the curatorial professional resources of natural history museums in Korea and propose a plan on how to develop human resources including younger generation of experts to be working on the future National Museum of Natural History. Many academic associations and expert groups in the field have been making multilateral efforts along with research-based studies about how to best establish a National Museum of Natural History in the past 20 years. The Korean Earth Science Society was a premier organization which has been working closely on the establishment of natural history museums and science museums through a number of academic studies and projects more than any other academic associations. This study recommends that the future National Museum of Natural History needs highly-trained specialists of museums. Therefore, the Korean Earth Science Society has to offer multiple courses that produce specialists in various fields of museums through education and training.

  • It has been proposed since modern times that we need to consult the history of mathematics in teaching mathematics, and some modifications of this principle were made recently by Lakatos, Freudenthal, and Brousseau. It may be necessary to have a direction which we consult when modifying the history of mathematics for students. In this article, we analyse the elements of the cognitive interest in Hamilton's discovery of the quaternions and in the history of discovery of imaginary numbers, and we investigate the effects of these elements on attention of the students of nowadays. These works may give a direction to the historic-genetic principle in teaching mathematics.

  • The chemical and kinematic properties of stars in the Galactic halo provide crucial information on the origin of the Galactic halo as well as the assembly history of the Milky Way. In this study, we present metallicity distribution functions (MDFs) in different regions of the Galactic halo as well as the kinematic characteristics in each region. The different MDFs and kinematic properties of stars in investigated regions allow us to associate them with the possible progenitor dwarf galaxies discovered to date; hence the assembly history of the Galactic halo.

  • The history of mathematics is an important part of Chinese highschool mathematics curriculum. The current 2003 revised curriculum in China refers directly to the history of mathematics and presents it as one of the optional series. Moreover, they publish separate history textbooks for mathematics according to the 2003 revised curriculum. The importance of the history of mathematics in Chinese highschool curriculum, which was revised in 2017, has increased. This study aims to analyze the contents of the highschool curriculum and mathematics history textbooks, which were revised in 2003. Based on the results of analysis, we make suggestions on the use of mathematics history for teaching mathematics in Korea.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the possibility of introducing the history of science in modern Korea into elementary education. Although there are many studies on applying a history of science to science education, they do not pay attention to the history of science in modern Korea. I survey research papers on the history of science in modern Korea and science education based on a history of science, and elementary science textbooks in Korea, Japan and the US. When we apply the history of science in modern Korea into elementary education, elementary students will recognize science has close relations to Korean culture and history and they will develop the familiarity with science. I show there are 3 ways using the history of science in modern Korea in elementary education: 1) Applying Korean scientists' research contents to science education, 2) Measures to evaluate Korean scientists correctly, 3) Materials for science education programs for gifted elementary students.

  • This project was carried out under the assumption that applying a science history program to a teaching-learning process would lead to students' increased interest in science and increase the development of their scientific process skills. The project aimed at designing an effective science history program which would help to improve students' scientific process skills, to enhance their interest in learning science, and to maintain their inquiry learning abilities. The survey for the activity objectives was produced by the authors. The test items used for testing students' scientific attitude and scientific process skills were created by Korea National University of Education. The survey about scientific perception indicated that there was a meaningful difference of p=0.005 before and after implementing this program. The survey about scientific interest shows that students became interested in science, science-learning and science-related activities after participating in the science history program. Students' scientific process sills increased by 9% after the program was implemented in the subjects' classes. This indicates that the science history program was effective in improving students' science scientific process skills. Since this project, which targeted 8th grade science education activities, has proven to be effective, developing other programs suitable for younger and older students seems promising, too.
