  • The characteristics of $S\breve{o}lc$ filters in $X^{(2)}$ nonlinear photonic crystals, periodically poled lithium niobate ($LiNbO_3$), were investigated by the Jones matrix method. The transmittance increases and the full width half maximum of the filter becomes narrow as the duty ratio increases. However, the filtering wavelength does not change. The transmittance at the filtering wavelength is over 95% when the duty ratio is larger than 0.35.

  • We printed a one-dimensional array of metallic wires and a two-dimensional array of metallic split ring resonators on a photo-paper by using a high-dots-per-inch resolution printer and an ink with silver nano-particles. The printed sample sizes are $1.0{\times}1.0cm^2$. The transmission measured by a terahertz time domain spectroscopy system shows that the arrays of wires and split ring resonators could act as polarizers and band-stop filters, respectively, in a terahertz frequency region.

  • Compared to the simple-beam springs, double-folded springs have advantages of the linearity even at the long stroke, so that they have been widely used for optical components such as optical switches and optical attenuators. Until now only the stiffness of the double-folded springs dn the perpendicular direction of the shuttle movement has been considered for the stable operation, however, the rotational stiffness of the splings has not been researched as much. Therefore, this paper suggests the double-folded springs of the maximum rotational stiffness with the constant stiffness in the stroke direction using the reliability based topology optimization (RBTO), whose operation properties were experimentally characterized.

  • The characteristics of the supercontinuum generated in photonic crystal fibers were investigated by using the generalized nonlinear $Schr\"{o}dinger$ equation and the split-step Fourier method. Based on the simulated results, we generated the supercontinuum spectrum with the flatness of ${\pm}4dB$ in the wavelength range of 650 to 900 nm by employing a 200-fs pulse of Ti:sapphire laser and a commercial photonic crystal fiber.

  • Here we report the long-term stability of polymer:nonfullerene solar cells which were stored under dark and indoor light condition. The polymer:nonfullerene solar cells were fabricated using bulk heterojunction (BHJ) layers of poly[(2,6-(4,8-bis(5-(2-ethylhexyl) thiophen-2-yl)-benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene))-alt-(5,5-(1',3'-di-2-thienyl-5',7-bis(2-ethylhexyl)benzo[1',2'-c:4',5'-c']dithiophene-4,8-dione))] (PBDB-T) and 3,9-bis(6-methyl-2-methylene-(3-(1,1-dicyanomethylene)-indanone))-5,5,11,11-tetrakis(4-hexylphenyl)-dithieno[2,3-d:2',3-d']-s-indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b']dithiophene (IT-M). To investigate their long-term stability, the PBDB-T:IT-M solar cells were stored in an argon-filled glove box. One set of the fabricated solar cells was completely covered with an aluminum foil to prevent any effect of light, whereas another set was exposed to indoor light. The solar cells were subjected to a regular performance measurement for 40 weeks. Results revealed that the PBDB-T:IT-M solar cells underwent a gradual decay in performance irrespective of the storage condition. However, the PBDB-T:IT-M solar cells stored under indoor light condition exhibited relatively lower power conversion efficiency (PCE) than those stored under the dark. The inferior stability of the solar cells under indoor light was explained by the noticeably changed optical absorption spectra and dark spot generation, indicative of degradations in the BHJ layers.

  • A thin GaN semiconducting film that grows on sapphires due to metalorganic chemical vapor deposition was machined for nanophotonic applications. The thin film had multilayered superlattice structures, including nanoscaled InGaN layers. Eight alternating InGaN/GaN multilayers provided a blue light emission source. Nanoscaled holes, 150 nm in diameter, were patterned on polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) film using an electron beam lithography system. The PMMA film blocked the etching species. Air holes, 75 nm in diameter, which acted as blue light diffraction sources, were etched on the top GaN layer by an inductively coupled plasma etcher. Hexagonal lattice photonic crystals were fabricated with 230-, 460-, 690-, and 920-nm pitches. The 450-nm wavelength blue light provided the nanodiffraction destructive and constructive interferences phenomena, which were dependent on the pitch of the holes.

  • Brillouin time-domain analysis in optical fibres is a novel technique making possible a distributed measurement of temperature and strain over long distance and will deeply modify our view about monitoring large structures, such as dams, bridges, tunnels and pipelines, Optical fibre sensing will certainly be a decisive tool for securing dangerous installations and detecting environmental and industrial threats.
