Concerns on environmental waste problems caused by non-biodegradable petrochemical-based plastic packaging materials as well as consumer's demand for high quality food products has caused an increasing interest in developing biodegradable packaging materials using annually renewable natural biopolymers such as polysaccharides and proteins. However, inherent shortcomings of natural polymer-based packaging materials such as low mechanical properties and low water resistance are causing a major limitation for their industrial use. By the way, recent advent of nanocomposite technology rekindled interests on the use of natural biopolymers in the food packaging application. Polymer nanocomposites, especially natural biopolymer-layered silicate nanocomposites, exhibit markedly improved packaging properties due to their nanometer size dispersion. These improvements include increased mechanical strength, decreased gas permeability, and increased water resistance. Additionally, biologically active ingredients can be added to impart the desired functional properties to the resulting packaging materials. Consequently, natural biopolymer-based nanocomposite packaging materials with bio-functional properties have huge potential for application in the active food packaging industry. In this review, recent advances in the preparation and characterization of natural biopolymer-based nanocomposite films, and their potential use in food packaging applications are addressed.

The sintering behavior of titanium-titanium nitride nanocomposite powders has been studied by dilatometry. Titanium. titanium nitride nanocomposite powders were produced by the reactive milling of micron sized titanium powder $(12\;{\mu}m)$ in nitrogen atmosphere. The Ti-TiN nanocomposite powders milled for various durations along with the initial micron sized Ti powders were then sintered in the temperature range of $450-1000^{\circ}C$ by a constant rate of heating $(10^{\circ}C/min)$. The linear shrinkage, shrinkage rate, activation energy for sintering and microstructure has been studied and discussed as a function of milling time.

This study deals with development of new bio-based polymeric materials from epoxidized soybean oil (ESO). The curing of ESO in the presence of organophilic montmorillonite produced an oil polymer-clay nanocomposite ("green nanocomposite") showing flexible property. A green nanocomposite (oil polymer-silica nanocomposite) coatings were synthesized by an acidcatalyzed curing of ESO with 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane. The curing of ESO in the presence of a biodegradable plastic, poly(caprolactone), produced a composite with semi-IPN structure. The mechanical properties of the composite was much superior to those of polyESO. These new oil-based materials have large potential for applications in various fields.
Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), PVA/Montmorillonite (MMT), PVA/Silver (Ag), and PVA/MMT/Ag nanocomposite nanowebs were prepared by electrospinning technique in aqueous solution. In order to investigate the effect of inorganic materials on the morphology and thermal properties of PVA based nanocomposite nanowebs, experiments were performed with 5 wt.% of MMT and Ag. Field emission type scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), reflection type X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermal gravimetric analyzer were utilized to characterize nanocomposite nanowebs. TEM and XRD results show MMT and Ag were well dispersed in PVA nanowebs. Those inorganic nanoparticles enhanced thermal property of the nanocomposite nanowebs.
A poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET)/organosilicate nanocomposite, with enhanced mechanical properties, has been prepared using the melt intercalation method. For this purpose, a new organic modifier has been synthesized for the preparation of organosilicate, which is thermally stable and compatible with PET. The use of the new organosilicate yielded almost exfoliated PET nanocomposite; whereas, the PET nanocomposites prepared by use of commercial organoclays (Cloisite 15A and 30B) show only an intercalated morphology. Particularly, the use of the new organosilicate showed an enhanced tensile modulus, and without sacrifice of the tensile strength and elongation on breaking, while the use of commercial organoclays only exhibit a trade-off between those mechanical properties.

The TiB2-reinforced iron matrix nanocomposite (Fe-TiB2) was in-situ fabricated from titanium hydride (TiH2) and iron boride (FeB) powders by a simple and cost-effective process that combines the mechanical activation (MA) and a subsequent heat treatment (HT). Effect of milling factors and synthesized temperatures on the formation of the nanocomposite were presented and discussed. A differential thermal analyser (DSC-TG) was employed for examination of thermal behavior of MAed powders. Phases of the nanocomposite were confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). The morphologies and microstructure of nanocomposite were investigated by field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Phase composition and distribution were analyzed by electron probe X-ray microanalysis (EPMA). Results showed that TiB2 particles formed in nanoscale were uniformly distributed in alloyed Fe matrix.

The quaternary ZrCrAIN nanocomposite thin films are synthesized by Closed-Field Unbalanced Magnetron Sputtering (CFUBMS). Microstructure and mechanical properties of ZrCrAIN nanocomposite thin films are studied. Grain refinement of ZrCrAIN nanocomposite thin film is occurred by controlling $N_{2}$ partial pressure. Maximum hardness value according to the various $N_{2}$ partial pressures is obtained at 45 GPa. It is also conformed that critical value of the grain size (d) needs to achieve the maximum hardness.
A flexible piezoelectric energy harvester(f-PEH) that converts tiny mechanical and vibrational energy resources into electric signals without any restraints is drawing attention as a self-powered source to operate flexible electronic systems. In particular, the nanocomposites-based f-PEHs fabricated by a simple and low-cost spin-coating method show a mechanically stable and high output performance compared to only piezoelectric polymers or perovskite thin films. Here, the non-piezoelectric polymer matrix of the nanocomposite-based f-PEH is replaced by a P(VDF-TrFE) piezoelectric polymer to improve the output performance generated from the f-PEH. The piezoelectric hybrid nanocomposite is produced by distributing the perovskite PZT nanoparticles inside the piezoelectric elastomer; subsequently, the piezoelectric hybrid material is spin-coated onto a thin metal substrate to achieve a nanocomposite-based f-PEH. A fabricated energy device after a two-step poling process shows a maximum output voltage of 9.4 V and a current of 160 nA under repeated mechanical bending. Finite element analysis(FEA) simulation results support the experimental results.

$Fe_3O_4$/Fe/graphene nanocomposite powder is synthesized by electrical wire explosion of Fe wire and dispersed graphene in deionized water at room temperature. The structural and electrochemical characteristics of the powder are characterized by the field-emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, field-emission transmission electron microscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and galvanometric discharge-charge method. For comparison, $Fe_3O_4$/Fe nanocomposites are fabricated under the same conditions. The $Fe_3O_4$/Fe nanocomposite particles, around 15-30 nm in size, are highly encapsulated in a graphene matrix. The $Fe_3O_4$/Fe/graphene nanocomposite powder exhibits a high initial charge specific capacity of 878 mA/g and a high capacity retention of 91% (798 mA/g) after 50 cycles. The good electrochemical performance of the $Fe_3O_4$/Fe/graphene nanocomposite powder is clearly established by comparison of the results with those obtained for $Fe_3O_4$/Fe nanocomposite powder and is attributed to alleviation of volume change, good distribution of electrode active materials, and improved electrical conductivity upon the addition of graphene.
