In this study, we examined the effects of organic types of calcium derived from oyster shell (OS-Ca) and nano-calcium (Nano-Ca) on the bio-availability and physiological responses associated with bone health in ovariectomised rats. Increased body weight, which is one of the physiological effects of ovary removal, was significantly recovered by Nano-Ca treatment (p<0.05). The reduced calcium level in the liver in ovariectomised rat was increased significantly with OS-Ca and Nano-Ca treatment (p<0.05), suggesting improved calcium bio-availability. Alkaline phosphatase (ALP), osteocalcin, and deoxypyridinoline (DPD) were analysed as biochemical markers of bone metabolism and health in the presence or absence of OSCa and Nano-Ca. ALP, osteocalcin, and DPD levels increased following ovary removal and tended to decrease after treatment with Nano-Ca, indicating that Nano-Ca induces favourable bone metabolism. This result was reflected in the recovery of bone mineral density (BMD) and bone mineral content (BMC) of the femur after Nano-Ca treatment following ovary removal. Taken together, our data show that the tested calcium treatments, especially using Nano-Ca, enhanced the bioavailability or absorption of calcium and positively affected bone metabolism in ovariectomised rats.
This study compared tooth's remineralization using enamel surface artificially demineralized with 0.1M lactate and HCL solution using Vicker's Hardness Number(VHN) to compare CPP-ACP and remineralization of nano-sized Carbonate Apatite's initial caries. Using pH circulation models divided into 0% nano-CA, 5% nano-CA, 10% nano-CA, 10% CPP-ACP and D.W. they were treated for 5 minutes, three times a day for 14 days to get the following results. 1. There were no significant differences among the initial surface hardness of samples demineralized surface of front tooth in 5 groups. and all 5 groups' surface hardness reduced significantly after demineralization of enamel. 2. When inquiring into hardness changes through pH circulation model, the highest hardness change was in 5% nano-CA group. Also. 10% nano-CA and 10% CPP-ACP groups increased significantly. but there was no significant difference statistically. In generalizing the above experiment results, nano-sized Carbonate Apatite showed remineralization, and compared to 10% CPP-ACP group, 5% nano-CA had remineralization to artificial caries. thus implies that when we develop method to contact with tooth of nano-CA in the future, it is expected to gain synergy effect on function of saliva, a natural remineralization material.
Calcium phosphate crystallites were prepared by wet chemical method for use in artificial bone. In order to obtain ${\beta}$-tricalcium phosphate (TCP), nano-crystalline calcium phosphate (CaP) was precipitated at $37^{\circ}C$ and at $pH5.0{\pm}0.1$ under stirring using highly active $Ca(OH)_2$ in DI water and an aqueous solution of $H_3PO_4$. The precipitated nano-crystalline CaP solution was kept at $90^{\circ}C$ for the growth of CaP crystallites. Through the growing process of CaP crystallites, we were able to obtain various sizes of rectangular CaP crystallites according to the crystal growing times. Dry nano-crystalline CaP powders at $37^{\circ}C$ were mixed with dry macro-crystalline CaP crystallites and the shaped mixture sample was fired at $1150^{\circ}C$ to make a ${\beta}-TCP$ block. Several tens of nm powders were uniformly coated on the surface, which was comprised of powders of several tens of ${\mu}m$, using a vibrator. The mixing ratio between the nanometer powders and the micrometer powders greatly affected the mechanical strength of the mixture block; the most appropriate ratio of these two materials was 50 wt% to 50 wt%. The sintered block showed improved mechanical strength, which was caused by the solid state interaction between the nano-crystalline ${\beta}-TCP$ and the macro-crystalline ${\beta}-TCP$.
The purpose of this study was to prepare calcium phosphate cement [CPC] for use in artificial bone. Nano-crystalline calcium phosphate [CaP] was precipitated at $37^{\circ}C$ using highly active $Ca(OH)_2$ in DI water and an aqueous solution of $H_3PO_4$. From the XRD measurements, the nano-CaP powder was close to apatitic TCP phase and the powders fired at $800^{\circ}C$ showed a critical ${\beta}$-TCP phase. A mixture of one mole $CaCO_3$ and two moles di-calcium phosphate was calcined at $1100^{\circ}C$ to make a reference ${\beta}$-TCP material. The nano-CaP powders were added to the normal ${\beta}$-TCP matrix and fired at $900^{\circ}C$ to make a ${\beta}$-TCP block. The sintered block showed improved mechanical strength, which was caused by the solid state interaction between nano-CaP and normal ${\beta}$-TCP.
Trifunctional epoxy resin triglycidyl paraaminophenol (TGPAP)/$CaCO_3$ nanocomposites were prepared using the melt blending method. The effects of nano-$CaCO_3$ content on the thermal behaviors, such as cure behavior, glass transition temperature ($T_g$), thermal stability, and the coefficient of thermal extension (CTE), were investigated by several techniques. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results indicated that the cure reaction of the TGPAP epoxy resin was accelerated with the addition of nano-$CaCO_3$. When the nano-$CaCO_3$ content was increased, the $T_g$ of the TGPAP/$CaCO_3$ nanocomposites did not obviously change, whereas the crosslinking density was linearly increased. The nanocomposites showed a higher thermal stability than that of the neat epoxy resin. This result could be attributed to the increased surface contact area between the nano-$CaCO_3$ particles and the epoxy matrix, as well as the high crosslinking density in the TGPAP/$CaCO_3$ nanocomposites. The CTE of the nanocomposites in the rubbery region was significantly decreased as the nano-$CaCO_3$ content was increased.
Effects of doping rare earth elements on Ln site of $Ln_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_3$ (Ln = N d, Sm and La) were examined from structure, magnetic and electrical properties. Size of a-axis increased as following order of La < Nd < Sm, whereas c-axis was not much changed. Curie temperatures of 170 K for $Nd_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_3$, 110 K for $Sm_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_3$ and 250 K for $La_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_3$ were obtained. This result coincides with change of Mn-O bond length causing by a-axis lattice constant. The highest magnetroresistance ratios were 22% at 77 K for $Sm_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_3$, 32% at 110 K for $Nd_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_3$, and 33% at 180 K for $La_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_3$.
Effects of doping rare earth element on Ln site of $Ln_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_3$ (Ln=Nd, Sm and La) were examined from sintering behavior, structure and magnetic properties. Sintering reactions proceeded rapidly in order of $La_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_3>Nd_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_3>Sm_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_3$. This result can be explained by diffusivity of metal cation. Size of a-axis increased as following order of La$Nd_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_3$, 93K for $Sm_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_3$ and 225K for $La_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_3$ were obtained. This result coincides with change of Mn-O bond length causing by a-axis lattice constant.
