  • Atomic force microscopy (AFM) has been widely utilized as a versatile tool not only for imaging surfaces but also for understanding nano-scale interfacial phenomena. By measuring the responses of the photo detector due to bending and torsion of the cantilever, which are caused by the interactions between the probe and the sample surface, various interfacial phenomena and properties can be explored. One of the challenges faced by AFM researchers originates in the physics of measuring the small forces that act between the probe of a force sensing cantilever and the sample. To understand the interactions between the probe and the sample quantitatively, the force calibration is essential. In this work, the procedures used to calibrate AFM instrumentation for nano-scale force measurement in normal and lateral directions are reviewed.

  • Nano adhesion and friction characteristics between SPM(scanning electron microscope) tips and flat plates of different materials were experimentally studied. Tests were performed to measure adhesion and friction in AFM(atomic force microscope) and LFM(lateral force microscope) modes in different conditions of relative humidity. Three different Si$_3$N$_4$ tips (rdaii : 15nm, 22nm and 50 nm) and three different flat plates of Si-wafer(100), W-DLC(tungsten-incorporated diamond-like carbon) and DLC were used. Results generally showed that adhesion and friction increased with the tip radius, and W-DLC and DLC surfaces were superior to Si-wafer. But the adhesion force of Si-wafer showed non linearity with the tip radius while W-DLC and DLC surfaces showed good correlation to the “JKR model”. It was found that high adhesion force between Si-wafer and a large radius of tip was caused by a capillary action due to the condensed water.

  • "Biomimetics" is the study and simulation of biological systems with desired properties. In recent times, biomimetic surfaces have emerged as novel solutions for tribological applications in micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS). These biomimetic surfaces are attractive for MEMS application as they exhibit low adhesion/friction and wear properties at small-scales. In this paper, we present some of the examples of biomimetic surfaces that have potential application in small-scale devices.

  • Si(100) surfaces were topographically modified i.e. the surfaces were patterned at micro-scale using photolithography and DRIE (Deep Reactive Ion Etching) fabrication techniques. The patterned shapes included micro-pillars and microchannels. After the fabrication of the patterns, the patterned surfaces were chemically modified by coating a thin DLC film. The surfaces were then evaluated for their friction behavior at micro-scale in comparison with those of bare Si(100) flat, DLC coated Si(100) flat and uncoated patterned surfaces. Experimental results showed that the chemically treated (DLC coated) patterned surfaces exhibited the lowest values of coefficient of friction when compared to the rest of the surfaces. This indicates that a combination of both the topographical and chemical modification is very effective in reducing the friction property. Combined surface treatments such as these could be useful for tribological applications in miniaturized devices such as Micro-Electro-Mechanical-Systems (MEMS).

  • In this study, the tribology of laser patterned DLC thin film was studied. DLC thin films were coated by RF-PECVD to improve the durability of tungsten carbide (WC) materials. DLC thin films have high hardness and low friction characteristics. Dot and line patterning was processed on the surface of DLC thin film with femtosecond laser, and the coefficient of friction was improved. As a result of ball on disk abrasion test, the hardness and friction coefficient of DLC thin films were much better than that of WC material. The friction coefficient of DLC thin film with dot patterning and line patterning showed better results. The excellent performance of the laser patterned DLC coating is appeared to reduce the coefficient of friction due to the reduction of surface contact area.

  • Nano materials have great potential for development of advanced lubricating and protecting materials. Nano-particles capped by organic compound such as organic acid, dialkyldithiophosphate (DDP) are capable to disperse stably in lubricating oils, and are able to reduce wear and to increase load-carrying capacity.

  • Many researchers have tried to improve the tribological characteristics of lubricant by adding various nano particles in the base lubricant. But the reliability evaluation of the lubricants are rarely performed in its real operation condition. In this study, the physical property and the tribological characteristics of the graphite nano lubricant were evaluated and compared with raw lubricant after thermal degrading. In order to evaluate the tirbological characteristics, the disk-on-disk tribotester was adopted to measure the friction coefficient of the graphite nano lubricants. Also the temperature variations of friction surfaces were measured by the thermocouple installed on the fixed plate in the test chamber of the tribotester. The kinematic viscosity was measured using a capillary viscometer on the temperatures of 40, 60 and $80^{\circ}C$. The results showed that the graphite nano lubricant had lower friction coefficient and less wear on the friction surfaces than raw lubricant. After thermally degrading, the friction coefficients of graphite nano lubricant increased, but the friction coefficients after thermal degradation were still maintained lower than those of raw lubricant.

  • Nano-Crystalline $CeO_2$ particles were dispersed in deionized water with controlled slurry chemicals for CMP test. According to the CMP test, the removal rate of $SiO_2$ layer was mainly controlled by the size and crystallinity of $CeO_2$ particles which can be controlled by the heat-treatment condition during $CeO_2$ synthesis. In contrast, the removal rate of $Si_3N_4$ layer was significantly influenced by the passivation reagent which protects the $Si_3N_4$ surface layer from excessive dissolution during CMP.

  • Nano-diamonds were added to Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) to improve the tribological properties of UHMWPE. Nano-diamonds which have a diameter of about 5-10nm were produced by detonation. UHMWPE/nano-diamonds composites were fabricated by hot pressing method. It is shown that friction coefficient was increased and wear resistance was improved as nano-diamonds were added to UHMWPE because of excellent mechanical properties of nano-diamonds located on UHMWPE surface.

  • New lubrication mechanism for nanomachine is proposed. This mechanism utilizes the effect of diffusive double layer observed in hydrophobic colloidal solution. Basic idea of the theory is inspired by the research for possible mechanism of bacterial flagellar motor In this study, formulation of this mechanism is achieved and numerical calculation is performed. It is shown that this mechanism can produce enough load capacitance. Furthermore not only capacitance to sustain driving force of flagellar motor
