  • The hybridization of carbon nano-materials enhances the efficiency of each function of the resulting structure or composites. Also, the addition of non-carbon elements to nanomaterials modifies the electrochemical properties. Electrodes combining porous carbon nanofibers (CNFs) and metal oxides benefit from the combination of the double-layer capacitance of the CNFs and the pseudocapacitive character associated with the surface redox-type reactions. Consequently, they demonstrate superior supercapacitor performance in terms of high capacitance, high energy/power efficiency and high rate capability. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the latest advances made in the development and application of various metal oxide/CNF composites (CNFCs) to supercapacitor electrodes.

  • A simple chemical precipitation technique is reported for the synthesis of a hybrid nanostructure of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) and titania ($TiO_2$) nanocrystals of average size 5 nm, which may be useful as a prominent photocatalytic material with improved functionality. The synthesized hybrid structure has been characterized by transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX), powder X-ray diffractometry (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy. It is clearly revealed that nearly monodispersed titania nanocrystals (anatase phase) of average size 5 nm decorate the surfaces of SWCNT bundles. The UV-vis absorption study shows a blue shift of 16 nm in the absorbance peak position of the composite material compared to the unmodified SWCNTs. The photoluminescence study shows a violet-blue emission in the range of 325-500 nm with a peak emission at 400 nm. The low temperature electrical transport property of the synthesized nanomaterial has been studied between 77-300 K. The DC conductivity shows semiconductor-like characteristics with conductivity increasing sharply with temperature in the range of 175-300 K. Such nanocomposites may find wide applications as improved photocatalyst due to transfer of photo-ejected electrons from $TiO_2$ to SWCNT, thus reducing recombination, with the SWCNT scaffold providing a firm and better positioning of the catalytic material.

  • Miniature ultrasonic and tactile sensors on Si substrate have been proposed, fabricated and characterized to detect objects for a dexterous robot. The ultrasonic sensor consists of piezoelectric PZT thin film on a Pt/Ti/$SiO_2$ and/or Si diaphragm fabricated using a micromachining technique; the ultrasonic sensor detects the piezoelectric voltage as an ultrasonic wave. The sensitivity has been enhanced by improving the device structure, and the resonant frequency in the array sensor has been equalized. Position detection has been carried out by using a sensor array with high sensitivity and uniform resonant frequency. The tactile sensor consists of four or three warped cantilevers which have NiCr or $Si:B^+$ piezoresistive layer for stress detection. Normal and shear stresses can be estimated by calculation using resistance changes of the piezoresitive layers on the cantilevers. Gripping state has been identified by using the tactile sensor which is installed on finger of a robot hand, and friction of objects has been measured by slipping the sensor.

  • In this study, nonlinear vibrations and dynamic instabilities of a smart embedded micro shell conveying varied fluid flow and subjected to the combined electro-thermo-mechanical loadings are investigated. With the aim of designing new hydraulic sensors and actuators, the piezoelectric materials are employed for the body and the effects of applying electric field on the stability of the system as well as the induced voltage due to the dynamic behavior of the system are studied. The nonlocal piezoelasticity theory and the nonlinear cylindrical shell model in conjunction with the energy approach are utilized to mathematically modeling of the structure. The fluid flow is assumed to be isentropic, incompressible and fully develop, and for more generality of the problem both steady and time dependent flow regimes are considered. The mathematical modeling of fluid flow is also carried out based on a scalar potential function, time mean Navier-Stokes equations and the theory of slip boundary condition. Employing the modified Lagrange equations for open systems, the nonlinear coupled governing equations of motion are achieved and solved via the state space problem; forth order numerical integration and Bolotin's method. In the numerical results, a comprehensive discussion is made on the dynamical instabilities of the system (such as divergence, flutter and parametric resonance). We found that applying positive electric potential field will improve the stability of the system as an actuator or vibration amplitude controller in the micro electro mechanical systems.

  • A $Li[Co_{1/3}Ni_{1/3}Mn_{1/3}]O_2$ cathode was modified by applying a $ZrF_x$ coating. The surface-modified cathodes were characterized by XRD, SEM, EDS, TEM techniques. XRD patterns of $ZrF_x$-coated $Li[Co_{1/3}Ni_{1/3}Mn_{1/3}]O_2$ revealed that the coating did not affect the crystal structure of the parent powder. SEM and TEM images showed that $ZrF_x$ nano-particles were formed as a coating layer, and EDS data confirmed that $ZrF_x$ distributed uniformly on the surface the powder. Capacity retention of coated samples at high C rates was superior to that of pristine sample. However, as the coating concentration increases beyond the optimum concentration, the rate capability was deteriorated. Whereas, as the increase of coating concentration to 2.0 wt %, the cyclic performances of the electrodes under the severe conditions (high cut-off voltage, 4.8 V, and high measurement temperature, $55^{\circ}C$) were improved considerably.

  • In this study, a patterning method using self-aligned nanostructures was introduced to fabricate GaN-based fin-gate HEMTs with normally-off operation, as opposed to high-cost, low-productivity e-beam lithography. The honeycomb-shaped fin-gate channel width is approximately 40~50 nm, which is manufactured with a fine width using a proposed method to obtain sufficient fringing field effect. As a result, the threshold voltage of the fabricated device is 0.6 V, and the maximum normalized drain current and transconductance of Gm are 136.4 mA/mm and 99.4 mS/mm, respectively. The fabricated devices exhibit a smaller sub-threshold swing and higher Gm peak compared to conventional planar devices, due to the fin structure of the honeycomb channel.

  • A railway track generates severe levels of vibrations. In order to reduce these vibrations and to provide structural stability, various rail pads, mats, etc., are used for vibration protection. In this study, a specially designed rail pad was developed to reduce vibration and to generate electric power simultaneously, that is, by using the vibrations generated by railway cars on the track. The newly developed rail pads were tested to evaluate the characteristics of electric power by investigating the generated voltage and the current levels and patterns. In addition, we proposed an optimal laminated structure and adhesive by comparing the voltage generated by each type of adhesive required for optimal adhesion of the rail pad and the piezoelectric device.

  • We analyzed the relationship between center potential and subthreshold swing (SS) of Junctionless Cylindrical Surrounding Gate (JLCSG) and Junctionless Double Gate (JLDG) MOSFET. The SS was obtained using the analytical potential distribution and the center potential, and SSs were compared and investigated according to the change of channel dimension. As a result, we observed that the change in central potential distribution directly affects the SS. As the channel thickness and oxide thickness increased, the SS increased more sensitively in JLDG. Therefore, it was found that JLCSG structure is more effective to reduce the short channel effect of the nano MOSFET.

  • We present multifunctional indium tin oxide (ITO) thin films formed at room temperature by a normal sputtering system equipped with a plasma limiter which effectively blocks the bombardment of energetic negative oxygen ions (NOIs). The ITO thin film possesses not only low resistivity but also high gas diffusion barrier properties even though it is deposited on a plastic substrate at room temperature without post annealing. Argon neutrals incident to substrates in the sputtering have an optimal energy window from 20 to 30 eV under the condition of blocking energetic NOIs to form ITO nano-crystalline structure. The effect of blocking energetic NOIs and argon neutrals with optimal energy make the resistivity decrease to $3.61{\times}10-4{\Omega}cm$ and the water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) of 100 nm thick ITO film drop to $3.9{\times}10-3g/(m2day)$ under environmental conditions of 90% relative humidity and 50oC, which corresponds to a value of ~ 10-5 g/(m2day) at room temperature and air conditions. The multifunctional ITO thin films with low resistivity and low gas permeability will be highly valuable for plastic electronics applications.

  • We report the phase transformation of Co thin films on a sapphire substrate induced by laser irradiation. As grown Co films were initially strained and tetragonally distorted. With low power laser irradiation, the surface was ruptured and irregular holes were formed. As the laser power was increased, the films changed into round shape Co nanocrystals with well-defined 6-fold structure. By measuring the XRD of Co nanostructure as a function of laser energy densities, we found that the change of morphological shapes from films to nanocrystals was accompanied with decrease of the tetragonal distortion as well as strain relaxation. By measuring the size distribution of nanocrystals as a function of film thickness, the average diameter is proportional to 1.7 power of the film thickness which was consistent with the prediction of thin film hydrodynamic (TFT) dwetting theory. Finally, we fabricated the formation of size controlling nanocrystals on the sapphire substrate without strain.
