In this study, we investigated current vegetation and assessed the health of vegetation through the KERVI (Korea Estuary Riparian Vegetation Index) to monitor vegetation changes near estuaries due to the opening of the Nakdong River estuary. As the first investigation of the long-term monitoring, six areas near the Nakdong River estuary were surveyed twice in July and October 2021, and vegetation monitoring and a survey of species composition and distribution density of aquatic, riparian, and land plants were carried out. The survey identified 262 taxa, 82 families, 192 genera, 196 species, 3 subspecies, 26 varieties, and 1 form of vascular plants in the surveyed area. The results of the vegetation health assessment through KREVI showed that sites 1 and 6 were rated "Very good" in both surveys, sites 2 and 4 were rated "Very good" in the first survey and then "Good"in the second survey, and site 3 and 5 were rated one grade higher in the second survey than the first survey. The assessment showed that the health grades of most species in the survey area were generally high. Most of the potential natural vegetation after the opening of estuary gates to create a brackish water area is expected to consist of reed (Phragmites communisTrin.) communities. The area of the willow (Salix koreensisAndersson) community adjacent to the water area may be somewhat narrower, but the community will be maintained. In the case of freshwater areas in inland areas with very low salinity, reeds (Phragmites communisTrin.) are expected to occupy most of them, and some communities such as amur silver-grass (Miscanthus sacchariflorusBenth.) and cattails (Typha orientalisC. Presl) are expected to be distributed. We suggest establishing measures such as estuary gate operation to create healthy brackish water regions through long-term monitoring.
The evapotranspiration (ET) is one of the most important factor in the hydrological cycle. In this study, remote sensing based ET algorithm using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) was considered. Then, Priestley-Taylor algorithm was used for estimation of potential evapotranspiration in South Korea, and its spatial distribution was analyzed. Overall applicability between estimated potential evapotranspiration and weather station pan evaporation in Nakdong river basin was represented. The results using small pan showed that correlation coefficient in Pohang and Moonkyung Station was 0.70 and 0.55, respectively. However, the results using large pan showed correlation coefficient in Pohang and Moonkyung Station was 0.62 and 0.52, respectively.

This study was done to evaluate resources distributed around the Nakdong-Jeongmaek which is the eastern ridge line of the Nakdong-river basin with 437km in length. Here we found and/or searched for thousands of resources within each of 210 villages around the ridge, which were divided into six categories including landscape, natural park, protected area, history, tourism and biodiversity. An inventory was also created using an attribute table in a shape file for identifying the spatial location and property for every resource existing in each village. Each of fields for six-typed resources has 210 records representing each village and resources within it. If a resource exists in a village, '1' is assigned for its existence in its corresponding record. Otherwise, '0' is assigned for its non-existence in the record. The number of '1' on six records for a village is meaning the number of resources contained within a village, which can be a barometer to decide the properties of each village. In this study, we found five core villages containing all kind of resources in it, while 52 villages were found having only a single type of resources within it. The other villages were known to have multiple resources like having two or more ones.

This study was focused on understanding the agricultural non-point sources pollution in 72 rural catchments of Nakdong river watershed from 2001 to 2005 every two year. Also. Pearson correlations between water quality and basin characteristic were computed. Water quality of this study watershed was better in 2003 than any other period. The water quality of upstream was recorded from 0.040 to 0.510 dS/m in EC, from 3.55 to 22.60 mg/L in DO, from 0.32 to 16.64 mg/L in T-N, from 0.00 to 12.21 mg/L in $NO_3-N$, from 0.000 to 0.860 mg/L in T-P, and from 0.000 to 0.640 mg/L in $PO_4-P$. A the downstream, EC was measured from 0.030 to 0.520 dS/m, DO from 4.13 to 18.36 mg/L, T-N from 0.38 to 26.88 mg/L, $NO_3-N$ from 0.10 to 20.12 mg/L, T-P from 0.002 to 0.820 mg/L, $PO_4-P$ from 0.002 to 0.690 mg/L. But there was no difference between upstream and downstream for the water quality. Based on the correlation analysis between water quality and land use, correlation between BOD and residential was the highest positive correlation of 0.541 (p<0.01), and correlation between $PO_4-P$ and forest was the highest negative correlation of -0.451 (p<0.01). Also, T-N, $NO_3-N$, and pH were not correlated with all basin characteristics and basin was not correlated with all water quality parameter. According to the correlation residential was causative of growing worst for water quality, and forest was causative of improving for water quality.

Fiber Dyeing and Finishing facility has been recognized as an important pollution source due to its consumption of large volumes of water and chemicals. Unit mass discharge for the conventional water quality parameters such as flowrate, SS, $BOD_5,\;COD_{Mn},\;COD_{Cr}$, TN, TP were estimated. To represent the respective industries, three companies were carefully selected based on its manufacturing goods, flowrate and location at various unit operations and processes. More than 90% of decrease in unit mass estimation between influent and effluent of BOD was observed. But the values themselves were similar to those of Fiber Manufacturing facility due to the high loadings of organic matter. Biodegradability of influent was almost three times higher than that of effluent. Unit mass discharge estimations of unit process (estimated in this study) based on space, products and raw material were similar to those of composite process (estimated by National Institute of Environmental Research), while big difference was observed in the other factors. Unit mass discharge factors calculated in this study can be used as the reference for the estimation of water pollution loading costs in Nakdong river basin. For the effective water pollution control and management, it is essential to characterize the various types of water quality parameters from the effluents of individual industrial wastewater treatment plants.

Soil and water quality was monitored in the Nakdong River basin to assess the impact of different agricultural practices. From five catchments, soil samples were collected at three times during 1996 to 1998, and water samples were collected at twelve times on July during 1995 to 1999. The major agricultural practices were paddy and upland farming in three areas surveyed: Youngju, Goryung, and Milyang. Apple orchards were located along in the Imgo-Cheon catchment. Intensive vegetable farming in plastic fIlm house was practiced in the Habin-Cheon catchment. Total N contents, 0.04-0.32%, of paddy soils were low in comparison with those of upland, orchard, and plastic film house soils. Available phosphate($P_2O_5$) contents, $2-421mg\;kg^{-1}$, in plastic film house soils were higher than those in paddy soils. In plastic film house and upland soils, CEC of soils were high. The N concentrations in most of the streams were higher than $1.0mg^{-1}$, the standard of agricultural irrigation water. The P concentrations were above $1.0mg^{-1}$, the standard of agricultural irrigation water and were higher than the minimum level for eutrophication, $0.01-0.05mg\;L^{-1}$ in most of the streams. In conclusion, nutrients by agricultural activity could affect water quality of streams near the agricultural fields. Good water quality in streams can be maintained by proper management of agricultural fields and by decreasing application amount of fertilizers in agricultural fields.
A natural hybrid of interspecific between the Coreoleuciscus splendidus and C. aeruginos (Cypriniformes: Cyprinidae) was captured in the Hwang-ji Stream, a tributary of the Nakdong River basin in Korea. An interspecific hybrid between C. splendidus and C. aeruginos was genetically identified based on morphological characteristics and the sequence analysis of nuclear recombination activating gene 1 (RAG1) gene (1,334 bp) and mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (CO1) gene (1,551 bp). As a result of morphological variations, the natural hybrid appeared to have an intermediate character between two parental species (C. splendidus and C. aeruginos) in three variations of black array (s) on dorsal, caudal and anal fin rays. Phylogenetic analysis inferred from RAG1 and CO1 sequence data revealed that Coreoleuciscus populations from Hwang-ji stream consist of two pure Coreoleuciscus species and a hybrid individual group. The individuals were clearly identified the cross and reciprocal hybrid by CO1 gene analysis. In RAG1 gene, 13 nucleotide variation loci were detected and the hybrid individuals displayed the double peaks of sequence chromatograms at the 9 diagnostic positions. In this study, molecular data and morphological variations were clearly demonstrated that hybridization did occur between C. splendidus and C. aeruginos. However, F2 hybrid generation and reproductive capacity of F1 hybrid individuals were not demonstrated.
The utilization of TOC(Total organic carbon), a new environmental standard, was evaluated for 30 lakes in the Nakdong River Basin, which is used for drinking and agricultural usage. The active use of water resources begins with securing satisfactory water quality. Since this allows people and nature to maintain stability of quality, water quality standards are being tightened to ensure good water quality. In order to improve the pollution level of organic matter in lakes in the living environment, it is important to use the appropriate organic substance index. The relationship between the newly introduced TOC and the existing COD(Chemical oxygen demand) in the targeted lake was positively correlated with the possibility of replacing the TOC with COD. However, the environmental grade standard using TOC is better than the environmental grade standard using COD, so it has the same effect as that of the grade of water quality using TOC as an organic substance factor. This indicates the limitation of TOC to directly replace existing COD when trying to determine or improve the quality level using organic indicators of lakes. Therefore, in order to secure the qualitative safety of the lake, it is required to strengthen environmental standards of TOC in terms of water quality grade. In addition, the correlation between TOC and COD shows a great difference depending on the utilization characteristics of the lake. This requires clear scientific identification, and it requires continuous monitoring of COD that has been used to accumulate indicators of lake organic matter.

This study investigated the environmental factors and fish assemblage in 42 wetlands between spring and autumn of 2017 to evaluate the fish distribution and deduce the management strategy for improving biodiversity in created wetlands located at the Nakdong River basin. The investigation identified a total of 30 fish species and found that the most of wetlands were dominated by exotic fishes such as Micropterus salmoides and Lepomis macrochirus. Fish species such as Rhinogobius brunneus, Opsariichthys uncirostris amurensis, Zacco platypus were less abundant in the area with high density of Micropterus salmoides (static area) because they preferred the environment with active water flow. The pattern analysis of fish distribution in each wetland using the self-organizing map (SOM) showed a total of 24 variables (14 fish species and 10 environmental variables). The comparison of variables indicated that the distribution of fish species varied according to water depth and plant cover rate and was less affected by water temperature, pH, and dissolved oxygen. The plant cover rate was strongly associated with high fish density and species diversity. However, wetlands with low plant biomass had diversity and density of fish species. The results showed that the microhabitat structure, created by macrophytes, was an important factor in determining the diversity and abundance of fish communities because the different species compositions of macrophytes supported diverse fish species in these habitats. Based on the results of this study, we conclude that macrophytes are the key components of lentic freshwater ecosystem heterogeneity, and the inclusion of diverse plant species in wetland construction or restoration schemes will result in ecologically healthy food webs.

Water supply system aims to meet the user's demand by securing water resources in a stable way. However, water supply failure sometimes happens because inflow decreases during drought period. Droughts induced by the lack of precipitation do not always lead to water supply failures. Thus, it is necessary to consider features of actual water shortage event when we evaluate a water supply risk. In this study, we developed a new drought index for drought management, i.e., Joint Drought Management Index (JDMI), using two water supply system performance indices such as reliability and vulnerability. Future data that were estimated from GCMs according to RCP 4.5 and 8.5 scenarios were used to estimate future water supply risk. After dividing the future period into three parts, the risk of water supply failure in the Nakdong River basin was analyzed using the JDMI. As a result, the risk was higher with the RCP 4.5 than the RCP 8.5. In case of RCP 4.5, W18 (Namgangdam) was identified as the most vulnerable area, whereas in case of RCP 8.5, W23 (Hyeongsangang) and W33 (Nakdonggangnamhae) were identified as the most vulnerable area.
