Background: This purpose of this study is to compare the analgesic efficacy, occurrence of motor block and other side effects of 48 hr continuous postoperative epidural infusions with 0.125% ropivacaine with fentanyl or 0.15% ropivacaine with fentanyl. Methods: Forty patients undergoing Cesarean section were randomly allocated into two groups. Both groups received epidural injection of 2.0% lidocaine 19 ml and 0.75% ropivacaine 2-5 ml with fentanyl $50{\mu}g$ for 20 minutes before surgery. Following surgery, a continuous epidural infusion using a two- day infusor was given for 40 minutes for post-operative pain control. Group 1 (n = 20) then received 0.125% ropivacaine and 6 ug/ml of fentanyl at a rate of 2 ml/h. Group 2 (n = 20) received 0.15% ropivacaine and 6 ug/ml of fentanyl at the same rate. Visual analog scales (VAS) for pain during rest and movement, sensory change and motor blockade were assessed for 48 hr after surgery. Results: There were no significant differences in VAS for pain during rest or movement. The incidence of side effects was similar in both groups. Conclusions: Using 0.125% ropivacaine with fentanyl via an epidural route provided similar pain relief and side effects as 0.15% ropivacaine with fentanyl.

The new potentially heptadentate $N_7$ ligand 1, 15-bis(2-pyridyl)-2, 5, 8, 11, 14-pentaazapentadecane(pytetren) has been synthesized and characterized by EA, IR, NMR, and mass spectrometry. Its proton association constants (log $K{_H}^n$) and stability constants(log $K_{ML}$) for $Co^{2+}$, $Ni^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$, and $Zn^{2+}$ ions were determined at 298.1K and ionic strength=0.100M($KNO_3$) by potentiometry: log $K{_H}^1=9.36$, log $K{_H}^2=9.12$, log $K{_H}^3=8.09$, log $K{_H}^4=6.62$, log $K{_H}^5=4.02$, log $K{_H}^6=2.54$: log $K_{ML}(CO^{2+})=22.67$, log $K_{ML}(Ni^{2+})=26.25$. log $K_{ML}(Cu^{2+})=28.46$, log $K_{ML}(Zn^{2+})=19.90$.
The new unsymmetric $N_6$ ligand 1-amino-13-(2-pyridyl)-3,6,9,12-tetraazatridecane (aptatd) containing one pyridyl group has been synthesized and characterized by EA, IR, and NMR. Its proton association constants $(log K_H^n)$ and stability constants $(log K_{ML})$ for Co(Ⅱ), Ni(Ⅱ), Cu(Ⅱ), and Zn(Ⅱ) ions were determined at 298.1 K and ionic strength 0.100 mol $dm^{-3}$ (KNO₃) in aqueous solution by potentiometry: log $K_H^1$=8.80, log $K_H^2$=8.49, log $K_H^3$=6.84, log $K_H^4$=4.17, log $K_H^5$=3.47; log $K_{ML}(Co^{2+})$=18.00, log $K_{ML}(Ni^{2+})$=21.31, log $K_{ML}(Cu^{2+})$=23.62, log $K_{ML}(Zn^{2+})$=15.60. The X-ray structure of its nickel(Ⅱ) complex [Ni(aptatd)]$(ClO_4)_2$ are reported: orthorhombic space group Pbca, a=15.715(1) Å, b=14.280(2) Å, c=19.443(2) Å, V=4363.4 (9) ų with Z=8. The geometry around nickel is a distorted octahedron with the pyridine nitrogen atom being cis to the nitrogen atom of the terminal primary amine.
Perfluorotolyl (PFT)-ether and perfluorotoly-trimethylsilyl (PFT-TMS) ether derivatives of oestrone, $17{\alpha}$- and $17{\beta}$oestradiol were prepared under phase transfer conditons. The former derivatives under negative ion chemical ionization conditions gave significant ions in the mass spectrometer but $17{\alpha}$- and $17{\beta}$ -oestradiol gave poor resolution. However, the PFT-TMS derivatives of 17.${\alpha}$- and$17{\beta}$-oestradiol showed good resolution. These derivatives were used for the analysis of oestrogens in bovine aqueous humour, vitreous humour and retina. The mean $({\pm}SEM)$ concentrations of oestrone in bovine aqueous humour (n=18), vitreous humour (n=18) and bovine retina (n=4) were $0.47{\pm}0.11$, $0.46{\pm}0.14$ and $1.10{\pm}0.24 ng.ml^{-1}$, respectively. $17{\alpha}$-Oestradiol was detected in 16 out of 18 samples of bovine aqueous humour and vitreous humour and the mean $({\pm}SEM)$ concentrations were $0.30{\pm}0.10$ and $0.08{\pm}0.02 ng.ml^{-1}$, respectively. The mean $({\pm}SEM)$ concentration of 17.betha.-oestradiol in aqueous humour (n=7) and vitreous homour (n=11) $0.83{\pm}0.26 ng ml^{-1}$ and $0.39{\pm}0.09 ng ml^-1$, respectively. In retina the concentrations of both steroids were below the detection limit.
This study was carried out for observation of growth, mycorrhizal formation and nutrient absorption of Pinus thunbergii seedlings treated with two soil mixtures and various nitrogen levels after inoculation with mycorrhizal fungus, Pisolithus tinctorius. 1. Seedlings grown on vermiculite applied with $50-150{\mu}g/ml$ nitrogen levels were well developed with pinnate type and cluster-like mycorrhizae. But seedlings on sandy loam had monopodial type in addition to the above-mentioned two types. 2. Optimum fertilization level for mycorrhizal formation is 50 or $150{\mu}g/ml$ N that showed best mycorrhizal formation of $86.4({\pm}3.14)%$ or $73.0({\pm}7.21)%$, respectively, but increased nitrogen levels decreased formation of mycorrhizal short roots. Seedlings applied with $450{\mu}g/ml$ nitrogen level decreased in net assimilation rate (NAR) and crop growth rate(CGR) during early growth of the seedlings, and they were increased since Aug, when nutrient application was stopped. 9. Inorganic nutrient absorption was increased more in seedlings grown on vermiculite and inoculated growth medium than those grown on sandy loam and noninoculated one, and it was gradually increased with increasing nitrogen increasing nitrogen level until $350{\mu}g/ml$. But $450{\mu}g/ml$ nitro gen level rather reduced absorption of nutrient.
In this study, we report antigenotoxicity and cytotoxicity of Korean Radish extract (RJ) and its seed protein (RSP) to non-tumoral 3T3 cell line. In the case of antigenotoxicity, each cell line was treated with $10{\mu}l\;of\;100{\mu}g/ml$ N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine(MNNG) before adding $10{\mu}l$of 10mg/ml RJ and 1mg/ml RSP to the cell. Both RJ and RS were shown $30\%\;and\;43\%$ of antigenotoxicity respectively. As a result of quantitative analysis for lactose dehydrogenase (LDH), no cytotoxic activity against 3T3 cells was detected when the cells were treated with various concentrations of RJ and RSP, RSP showed $85\%$ of antimicrobial activity against cosmetic sample (C1) assumed as contaminated by bacteria. RSP and RJ showed $79\%\;and\;76\%$ of antimicrobial activities repectively on another cosmetic sample (C4, contaminated by fungi) were treated with 10mg/ml RJ and 1 mg/ml RSP
We investigated the flavonoid and phenol contents and antioxidant effect of wine by-product extract. Antioxidant effects were measured with 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2.2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt radical cation (ABTS+) assays. Cellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) were measured with the dichlorofluorescein-diacetate (DCFH-DA) assay. The flavonoid and phenol contents of the methanol (MeOH) extract were greater than those of the acetone+methylene chloride (A+M) extract. Among fractions, the 85% aqueous methanol (85% aq. MeOH) fraction contained the highest flavonoid contents, while the n-BuOH fraction had more phenol contents. In the DPPH and ABTS assays, the MeOH extract showed a scavenging effect greater than that of the A+M extract (p<0.05). The n-BuOH fraction (0.5 mg/ml concentrations) showed scavenging effects of 72% and 92%, respectively, in the DPPH and ABTS assays (p<0.05). However, the 85% aq. MeOH fraction showed a 90% scavenging effect in the DPPH assay only. In 120 min ROS production assay, all tested fractions dose-dependently decreased cellular ROS production induced by H2O2 in comparison with that produced by exposure to the extract-free control. The MeOH extract showed a higher sinhibitory effect on cellular ROS producing than that of the A+M extract at all concentrations tested. Treatment with the n-BuOH fraction (0.1 mg/ml concentrations) inhibited cellular ROS production by 60%. These results indicate that the n-BuOH fraction of wine by-product extract inhibited cellular oxidation and may contain valuable bioactive compounds such as flavonoids and phenols.
Abundances and bacterivory of heterotrophic and mixotrophic nanoflagellates were investigated fourtimes between October 1993 and March 1995 in an estuarine system of the Mankyung and Dongjin rivers to understand distributions of nanoflagellates and ecological significance of bacterivory of nanoflagellates. Bacterivory of nanoflagellates were measured with fluorescently labeled bacteria (FLB). Heterotrophic and autotrophic flagellates showed a rage of 438-4,159 cells ml/SUP -1/ (mean of 2,145 cells ml/SUP -1/, n=20) and 971- 4,935 cells ml/SUP -1/ (mean of 2,2226 cells ml/SUP -1/, n-20), respectively. These two groups of nanoflagellates generally showed similar distributions of abundance. Abundances of heterotrophic nanoflagellates, known as major grazers of bacteria, and those of autotrophic nanoflagellates with chloroplasts showed statistically significant correlations with bacterial abundance (respectively, r$^2$=0.51 and r $^2$=0.47, p>0.05). Mixotrophic nanoflagellates seemed to comprise at least 4-23% of autotrophic nanoflagellate populations. Individual predation rates of heterotrophic nanoflagellates ranged from 2.2 to 14.2 bacteria flagellate/SUP -1/ h/SUP -1/ (mean of 4.9 bacteria flagellate/SUP -1/h/SUP -1/, n=16), and those of mixotrophic nanoflagellates from 1.6 to 9.7 bacteria flagellate/SUP -1/ h/SUP-1/ (mean of 3.7 bacteria flagellate /SUP -1/ h/SUP -1/, n=16). Bacterivory by mixotrophic nanoflagellates comprised from 30 to 69% of total nanoflagellates grazing on bacteria, indicating the significant role of mixotrophic nanoflagellates as grazers on bacteria in the study area. The ratios of grazing rates on bacteria to bacterial secondary production ranged widely from 0.06 to 1.23. In June, when abundances of total nanoflagellates were low, removal of bacteria by bacterivory of nanoflagellates was also a small fraction (0.08${\pm}$ 0.01, n=4) of bacterial production. In other seasons, nanoflagellates usually grazed on bacteria in significant fraction (0.06${\pm}$0.37, n=9) of bacterial production. Both heterotrophic and mixotrophic nanoflagellates appear to be major grazers on bacteria, and might transfer bacterial secondary production to higher trophic level in an estuarine system of the Mankyung and Dongjin rivers.
