  • Ligands, Br-PEMP, Cl-PEMP and $CH_3O-PEMP$ having Br, Cl and $CH_3O$ substituents at 5-position of the $N_2O$ tridentate ligand, 2-[(2-pyridine-2-ethylamio)-methyl]-phenol (H-PEMP) containing pyridine and phenol were synthesized. Another ligand, Naph-PEMP having pyridine and 2-hydroxy-1-naphthalene was also synthesized. The ligands were characterized using elemental analysis, UV-visible, IR, $^1H\;NMR\;and\;^{13}C$ NMR spectroscopy and mass analysis. The potentiometric titration study in aqueous solution revealed that the proton dissociation of the ligands occurred in three steps and the order of overall proton dissociation constants (log${\beta}$) was $CH_3O-PEMP$ > Naph-PEMP > H-PEMP > Cl-PEMP > Br-PEMP. The order of stability constants (logML and log$ML_2$) of their transition metal complexes was Co(II) < Ni(II) < Cu(II) > Zn(II). The order in their stability constants values of each transition metal complex agreed well with that in overall proton dissociation constant value of the ligands.

  • Highly sensitive and mechanically stable gas sensors have been fabricated using the microfabrication and micromachining techniques. The sensing materials used to detect the offensive $CH_3SH$ and $(CH_3)_3N$ gases are 1 wt% Pd-doped $SnO_2$ and 6 wt% $Al_2O_3$-doped ZnO, respectively. The optimum operating temperatures of the devices are $250^{\circ}C$ and $350^{\circ}C$ for $CH_3SH$ and $(CH_3)_3N$, respectively and the corresponding heater power is, respectively, about 55mW and 85mW. Excellent thermal insulation is achieved by the use of a double-layer membrane: i.e. $0.2{\mu}m$-thick silicon nitride and $1.4{\mu}m$-thick phosphosilicate glass. The sensors are mechanically stable enough to endure the heat cycles between room temperature and $350^{\circ}C$, at least for 30 days.

  • Several studies have demonstrated that nanoparticles (NPs) have toxic effects on cultured cell lines, yet there are no clear data describing the overall molecular changes induced by NPs currently in use for human applications. In this study, the in vitro cytotoxicity of three oxide NPs of around 100 nm size, namely, mesoporous silica (MCM-41), iron oxide ($Fe_2O_3$-NPs), and zinc oxide (ZnO-NPs), was evaluated in the human embryonic kidney cell line HEK293. Cell viability assays demonstrated that 100 ${\mu}g/mL$ MCM-41, 100 ${\mu}g/mL$ $Fe_2O_3$, and 12.5 ${\mu}g/mL$ ZnO exhibited 20% reductions in HEK293 cell viability in 24 hrs. DNA microarray analysis was performed on cells treated with these oxide NPs and further validated by real time PCR to understand cytotoxic changes occurring at the molecular level. Microarray analysis of NP-treated cells identified a number of up- and down-regulated genes that were found to be associated with inflammation, stress, and the cell death and defense response. At both the cellular and molecular levels, the toxicity was observed in the following order: ZnO-NPs > $Fe_2O_3$-NPs > MCM-41. In conclusion, our study provides important information regarding the toxicity of these three commonly used oxide NPs, which should be useful in future biomedical applications of these nanoparticles.

  • Recently, n-InZnO/p-CuO oxide diode has attracted great attention due to possible application for selector device of 3-dimensional cross-point resistive memory structures. To investigate the detailed properties of InZnO (IZO), we have deposited IZO films on the fused quartz substrate using PLD (pulsed laser deposition) method at oxygen pressure of 1~100 mTorr and substrate temperature of RT$\sim600^{\circ}C$. The influence of oxygen pressure and substrate temperature on structural, optical and electrical of IZO films is analyzed using XRD (x-ray diffraction), SEM (scanning electron microscopy), UV-Vis spectrophotometry, spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) and hall measurements. The XRD results shows that the deposited thin films are polycrystalline over $300^{\circ}C$ of substrate temperature independent of oxygen pressure. The resistivity of films was increased as oxygen pressure and substrate temperature decrease. The thickness and optical constants of the deposited films measured with UV-Vis spectrophotometer were also compared with those of broken SEM and SE results.

  • To verify the fate and transport of engineered nanoparticles (ENP), it is essential to understand its interactions with organic matter. Previous research has shown that dissolved organic matter (DOM) can increase particle stability through steric repulsion. However, the majority of the research has been focused on model organic matter such as humic or fulvic acids, lacking the understanding of organic matter found in field conditions. In the current study, organic matter was sampled from wastewater treatment plants to verify the stability of engineered nanoparticles (ENP) under field conditions. To understand how different types of organic matter may affect the fate of ENP, wastewater was sampled and separated based on their size; as small organic particular matter (SOPM) and large organic particular matter (LOPM), and dissolved organic matter (DOM). Each size fraction of organic matter was tested to verify their effects on nano-zinc oxide (nZnO) and nano-titanium oxide (nTiO2) stability. For DOM, critical coagulation concentration (CCC) experiments were conducted, while sorption experiments were conducted for organic particulates. Results showed that under field conditions, the surface charge of the particles did not influence the stability. On the contrary, surface charge of the particles influenced the amount of sorption onto particulate forms of organic matter. Results of the current research show how the size of organic matter influences the fate and transport of different ENPs under field conditions.

  • CO oxidation was performed with Cu-Mn and Cu-Zn co-precipitated catalysts as differential precipitant, metal ratio and calcination temperature. The effects of differential metal mole ratio and calcination temperature in mixed metal oxide catalyst were investigated with CO oxidation reaction. Physiochemical properties were studied by XRD, $N_2$ sorption and SEM. 2Cu-1Mn with $Na_2CO_3$ catalyst calcined at $270^{\circ}C$ has a large surface area $43m^2/g$ and the best activity for CO oxidation. $Cu_{0.5}Mn_{2.5}O_4$ in XRD peak shows the lower activity than others. The catalytic activity over the catalyst calcined $270^{\circ}C$ displayed the highest conversion, and it was better activity comparing with Pt catalysts CO conversion.

  • Characteristics of self-propagating reaction for the preparation of ZnO powder from precursors composed of nitrate and citrate compounds were examined. The ratio of C/N was maintained in range of 0.7~0.8 to initiate the self-propagating reaction between the reducing citrate and oxidizing nitrate groups. The samples were decomposed thermally by using TGA. The sudden decomposition occurred in the range of X > 0.5 in a very short time with a very sharp decrease of mass, indicating that the self-propagating reaction would occur. Friedman, Ozawa-Flynn-Wall and Vyazovkin methods were employed to predict the activation energy, reaction order and frequency factor of the reaction rate in the rate determining step of X < 0.5 range. The activation energy increased with increasing fractional conversion in the range of 46~130 (kJ/min). The reaction order decreased in the range of 2.9~0.9, while the frequency factor increased in the range of 85~278 ($min^{-1}$), respectively, with increasing the rate of temperature increase.

  • In this study, the contaminated status of groundwater under Ponchon Basin, Kwangju-city was analyzed by hydrogeological survey. Though the distribution of groundwater hydraulic head was similar with the ground elevation, the flow system of groundwater was changed due to overpumping in the industrial area. Paddy field and residential area which were located in the north part of the basin had relatively high concentrations of Cl, N $a^{+}$ and N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ in the groundwater. Southern part of the basin which most industrial area occupied had relatively high concentrations of HC $O_3$, $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$ and Zn. Groundwater was contaminated by C $l^{[-10]}$ and N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ due to the infiltration of domestic sewage and factory wastewater. In the Cl case, C $l^{[-10]}$ had a tendency of distribution over the water shed along with the contaminated source. The drawdown of groundwater due to overpumping caused more vertical movement of contaminant than lateral movement. If the overpumping continues in the industrial area, the groundwater flow system will be more affected and the groundwater will be lowered in the north part of basin. It is clear that contamination by C $l^{[-10]}$ and N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ due to domestic sewage and factory wastewater will spread through the whole basin area.rea.

  • We have investigated effects of the lattice mismatch between the LPE films and the substrates. We have grown $La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}$(x=0.1 to 0.15) single crystalline films on single crystalline substrates having different lattice parameter ratio c/a e.g., $La_{2-x}Sr_{x}Cu_{1-y}Zn_{y}O_{4},\;La_{2-x}Ba_{x}CuO_{4},\; LaSrAlO_{4}\;and\;La_{2-x}Sr_{x}Cu_{1-y}Al_{y}O_{4}$ etc., using the IR-LPE technique. The superconducting properties of the grown films were found to vary significantly depending on the lattice mismatch with different substrates.
