The Visual Acuity and Refraction on Students of Primary School Using Eyeglasses in Kyung-Nam Region (경남지역 안경 착용자 초등학생들의 시력과 굴절)

  • The study of the visual acuity and refraction status was performed to the students of primary school using eyeglasses in Kyung Nam region, Korea. Two hundred sixty three subjects with various styles of ametropia were analyzed the visual acuity and refraction examination by the subjective and objective tools. The results of study were as follows; 1) According to the increase of age of subjects, the visual acuity of binocular in naked eyes was decrease. However ametropia was increase. 2) The high frequency of ametropia types in the binocular was simple myopia, and the next order of high frequency was mixed astigmatism, myopic compound astigmatism, simple hyperopia, and hyperopic compound, respectively. 3) On the power of spherical refractive error of ametropia, the high frequency was -1.00 diopter, and the next order of high frequency was -2.00 diopter, +2.00 diopter, -3.00 diopter, and so on, respectively. 4) According to the increase of subjects ages, the changes of dioptric power of myopic spheric power was increase. however the frequency of the boy and girl was similar results, also the dioptric values of refractive status in binocular was similar results. As the results of this study, we conclude that the relationship of the visual acuity and refractive error status in primary students using eyeglasses was improved.

  • Purpose: The objective of the study: At present, the spectacles, with its use as a medical aids or a fashion trimming, are recognized as one of the living necessities which can't be separated from human body. One of the features of spectacles is that it must be worn on any part of human body. Such a feature has to be satisfied under the condition an user keeps feeling comfortable with the rim of spectacles worn. In order to ensure meeting this condition, a criterion has to be arranged for the design of the rim of spectacles. In order to manufacture a rim of spectacles which allows an user to secure a comfortable range of vision as well as enhancing the feeling when to be worn, a manufacturing standard has to be established based on optical science. No precise rim of spectacles could be made from the manufacturing method depending on the manufacturer's sensibility. When the rim of spectacles was manufactured according to the incorrect standards, it may cause an user such a fatal result as myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism. Methods: This study focuses on providing a detailed explanation about the design of rim, which is the most important element during designing a rim of spectacles, making use of the optical elements of spectacles, and helping the manufacturers and the people who work in the spectacles-related business understand and recognize what is correct and exact and then leading them to establish a standard in respect to the manufacture and selection of spectacles. Results, Conclusions: Considering the fact there happen many errors in relation with the names of rim stipulated in the provisions of International Standards Organization (ISO), due to wrong interpretation by some of the rim manufacturers, the right interpretation should be given about the bridge which is directly connected to rim, so that the rims of spectacles manufactured in Korea could keep a favorable position in competing with the foreign products of same kinds.

The Change of Corneal Refractive Power by Everted Silicone Hydrogel Contact Lens Wear (역방향 실리콘 하이드로겔 렌즈 착용에 따른 각막 굴절력 변화)

  • Purpose: The purpose was to study the corneal refractive power changes associated with the wearing of everted silicone hydrogel soft lenses. Methods: The corneal refractive power and corneal astigmatism were measured using corneal topographer (CT-1000, Shin-nippon Co., Japan) for checking change of corneal refractive power and objective refractive error was measured by auto-refractometer (Natural vision-K 5001, Shin-nippon Co., Japan). We measured at baseline and 1 week after lens wearing. Results: The correcting of corneal refractive power could be effective in low myopia. It's more effective to the higher power of greatest meridian of cornea and the more corneal astigmatism. 73% of subjects' refractive error was decrease less than 1 D and 17% of the subjects had an reverse effect (increase) occurs. The reduction of objective refractive error was more effective when cornea refractive power was great or corneal astigmatism was much. Conclusions: Pressure which the everted silicone hydrogel lens to the cornea could be caused. It occurred as the degrees of corneal power, corneal astigmatism and objective refractive error differences. Selection of an appropriate subject is important considering difficulty of changing the parameters of the lens.

The Correlation of Tear Break-Up Time according to Corneal Refractive Power (각막굴절력에 따른 누액층 파괴시간 분포와 연관성)

  • In this study, the relation between the corneal refractive power and the tear break-up time(TBUT) was analyzed. The results can be effectively used in eye clinics and served as the reference on wearing the contact lenses. We had measured the radius of the corneal of university students who are in the range of 21 to 27 year-old and who don't have eye disease. The corneal refractive power was calculated by using the radius of the corneal. And TBUT is the time when the mire image is distorted first time. The relation between the corneal refractive power and TBUT in right eye was a linear as 'y=37.921-0.610x', in which the larger the refractive power of the cornea is, the shorter TBUT is(negative relationship; r=-0.462, p=0.010). The relation in left eye was also a negatively linear as 'y=41.894-0.695x'(r=-0.509, p=0.004). Consequently, in both eyes the corneal refractive power and TBUT have a negative correlation when myopia is a high. It is possible to predict TBUT, which is necessary in deciding on wear of contact lenses, by measuring the corneal radius of subjects.

A Clinical Study on the Decreased Visual Acuity (視力低下에 對한 臨床的 考察)

  • We observed 79 patients, who visited the Department of Oph. & Otorhinolaryngology in Oriental medicine of Kyung Hee University Medical Center from July 1995 to June. 1996, with the complaint of decreased visual acuity. The results were as follows. 1. In the incidence of decreased visual acuity, men's was $46.84\%$(37 cases) and women's was $53.16\%$(42 cases), which showed that more women were suffering decreased visual acuity than men. In the incidence of myopic ametropia and astigmatic ametropia among the total patients, men's was $44.62\%$(29 cases) and $37.50\%$(9 cases) each, and women's was $55.38\%$(36 cases) and $62.50\%$( 15 cases) each, which also showed that more women were suffering myopia and astigmatism than men. 2. The average age of patients was 11.08 years at the first visit. The most were the patients from 6 to 15 years old, with 63 cases($79.74\%$). 3. The age of onset in the decreased visual acuity was mainly 6∼10 years with 45 cases($56.96\%$). In the case of myopic ametropia and astigmatic ametropia, the age of onset was also mainly 6∼10 years with 65 cases($60.00\%$), and with 12 cases($50.00\%$) each. 4. In ABO blood type, the frequency was, A type, O type, B type and AB type in order. In men, O type was the most, while in women, A type. 5. In the liking for cool or warm food or tepidity, the liking for cool food was the most in both men and women. 6. The type of decreased visual acuity was mainly myopic ametropia with 65 cases($82.28\%$). Astigmatic ametropia was $30.38\%$ with 24 cases, hyperopic ametropia $2.53\%$ with 4 cases, and the decreased visual acuity accompanied by amblyopia $7.59\%$ with 4 cases. 7. At the first visit, the average visual acuity of O.D. was 0.29 and that of O.S.. 0.24, which showed that O.S.. is worse than O.D.. The visual acuity below 0.2 was the most, $63.29\%\;in\;O.D..\;72.15\%$ in O.S.. 8. In the treatment period, 4∼7 weeks occupied $35.44\%$ with 28 cases, 8∼11 weeks $30.38\%$ with 24 cases, so the treatment period was mainly these two periods with 52 cases($65.82\%$). 9. The average frequency of acupuncture treatment per week was mainly 2.1∼3.0 times with 45 cases($56.96\%$). In this case, men was 24 cases($53.33\%$) and women 21 cases($46.67\%$), so men was more than women. 10. The frequency of herbal prescription was mainly Gamijungjitang and Gamijingjibogansan with 76 cases($85.39\%$).

A Study of Eye Refraction State on Male Old Age (노인 남성의 안굴절 상태에 대한 연구)

  • The old age may experienced the visual acuity decrease according to refraction abnormality and they have a inconvenient real life style on viewing condition. So that, This study can provide the accurate information on the treatment of visual acuity of a male old ages by test of eye refraction state. The test was performed the visual acuity test by the object and subject methods.and the subjects was the Korean male over 55 old age. The eye types were 0.8 % positive for emmetropia, 15.2 % for myopia, and 84 % for hyperopia, respectively. The abnormal refraction eyes were 1.3 % positive for simple myopic astigmatism, 13.9 % for compound myopic astigmatism. 3.4 % for simple hyperopia and 3.1 % for simple hyperopic astigmatism, 77.5 % for mixed astigmatism, respectively. The asix of astigmatisms were 62% positive for against-the-rule astigmatism, 6% for with-the rule astigmatism, and 32 % for oblique astigmatism, respectively. On the total myopic spherical power, the $-0.50{\leq}$spheric equivalent <-2.00 diopter was 84.3%, the $-2.00{\leq}$spherical equivalent <-6.00.diopter was 15.7%. On the total hyperopic spherical power, the $+0.50{\leq}$spheric equivalent <+2.00 diopter was 74.2%, the $+2.00{\leq}$spherical equivalent <+6.00 diopter was 24.8%, and anything over the +6.00 diopter was 1%. On the astigmatic power, the $0.5{\leq}$cylinder <1.00 diopter was 54.1%, the $1.00{\leq}$cylinder <2.00 diopter was 32.4%, and anything over the 2.00 cylinder diopter was 13.5%.

Various Factors giving impacts on the Visual Impairment in schoolchildren (초등학생들의 시력장애에 영향을 미치는 요인)

  • This study was investigated the refractive state and the analysis of ametropic frequency among schoolchildren who were the three grade in W elementary school in Suwon. Total 488eye (244 persons) were examined by the trial-lens set and the questionary. Through Trial-Lens set verification, several factors related to ametropic frequency were obtained as the following. Among the 244 persons, the students who wear spectacles or need to wear spectacles were 27.3%, among the 27.3% students, the students who have low visual acuity below 0.3 were 6.3%. The ametropia eyes among the total eyes were 27.3%. Among ametropic eyes, myopia and hyperopia were 25.4% and 1.9%. Among the total ametropic errors were low refractive error were 71.4%, and middle refractive error were 28.6%. In ratio myopic frequency, it was statistically related to the refractive errors with the environments factors such as reading distance & habits, T.V watching distance. Among the students belonged to below 0.7 visual acuity, the wear spectacles students were 63.3%. The ratio of anisometropia was 3.4%.

Comparison of Accommodative Response among Emmetropes, Spectacle and Contact Lens Wearer (정시, 안경 및 콘택트렌즈 착용자의 조절반응량 비교)

  • Purpose: The purposes of this study are to investigate accommodative response among emmetropes, spectacle wearer and contact lens wearer, and correlation between refractive error and accommodative respons for each group. Methods: The 72 subjects(144 eyes) who do not have any ocular diseases were participate in this study. Subjects were categorized into emmetropes, spectacle wearer and contact lens wearer by refractive error using closed-field auto-refractometer. We measured dominant eye, naked/habitual visual acuity and refractive error of monocular/binocular vision of refractive error for far/near distance with open-field auto-refractometer and calculated accommodative lag. Results: There were no significant difference of accommodative lag between right and left eye dominant and non-dominant eye, monocular and binocular vision, and spectacle lens wearer and contact lens wearer, However the accommodative lag of binocular vision was severe than monocular vision at near. The lag of myopia was larger than emmetropes, and male was larger than female. Significant correlation was found between refractive error and accommodative lag in total subjects and the same result was found in emmetropes and contact lens wearer. However there were no significant correlation in the spectacle wearer. Conclusions: There were significant difference between emmetrops and myopes in terms of accommodative lag, however accommodative lag of spectacle wearer was not different with contact lens wearer in myopes. There were also significant correlation between refractive error and accommodative lag in emmetropes and contact lens wearer, but the accommodative lag of spectacle wearer was not significantly correlated with refractive error.

The Study of Kinetic Visual Acuity in College Students (대학생의 동적시력에 관한 연구)

  • Purpose: We were to obtain the basic data for studying kinetic visual acuity through the comparative analysis in kinetic visual acuity, visual acuity, refractive error, pupil size, and hand reaction time for college students. Methods: We had tested the kinetic visual acuity, visual acuity, refractive error and hand reaction time using the kinetic visual acuity tester (KOWA AS-4A), the hand reaction time program and auto-refractometer for thirty-nine male and same female optometry students with more than +0.1 LogMAR visual acuity in both eyes. And the results were examined gender differences of kinetic visual acuity and the factors correlation. Results: In the measured values of male, pupil size were 6.00 mm, hand reaction time 0.23 msec, refractive error -1.66 D, visual acuity -0.07, kinetic visual acuity 0.59 and pupil size 5.86 mm, hand reaction time 0.24 msec, refractive error -2.08 D, visual acuity -0.02, kinetic visual acuity 0.46 in female. It was significant difference for kinetic visual acuity values but other factors were not. The kinetic visual acuity and left visual acuity had the highest correlation, r=-0.406. The kinetic visual acuity indicated more excellent values in the case of increasing visual acuity and decreasing myopia amount. Conclusions: It was able to see that male college students were better than female for kinetic visual acuity and the visual acuity were related to kinetic visual acuity.
