  • Traditional music should be succeeded and developed through the systematic education since music represents culture and history of one country. In Korea, even through the importance of Korean traditional music has been emphasized through the seven times of revision of national curriculum, music education has been still Western-oriented. This study aims to make students have experience Uttari Samul-nori and investigate the perception changes about the Korean traditional music. It is ultimately expected that students inherit the Korean traditional music and further recreate our own traditional culture. Samul-nori class was organized in the regular music curriculum twice a week, for 10 hours and various activities were tried during that time. 1st-year high school students participated in this research and they were allowed to play Samul instruments directly and play the basic rhythm suggested in the newly designed curriculum. Before and after the research, the questionnaires were sent to examine the attitude changes toward the Korean traditional music. The result of the questionnaire are as follows: First, Samul-nori activities affect positively the students' interest in the Korean traditional music and Samul-nori itself. Second, Danso(short bamboo flute) education which has been implemented most frequently during the Korean music education, is not satisfactory to the students. Third, students were satisfied with the new teaching method of Samul-nori and most students wanted to continue to take Samul-nori class. Last, students recognized the importance of Korean traditional music education after the research activities.

  • Emotional style of multimedia art works are abstract content information. This study aims to explore emotional style transfer method and find the possible way of matching music with appropriate images in respect to emotional style. DCNNs (Deep Convolutional Neural Networks) can capture style and provide emotional style transfer iterative solution for affective image generation. Here, we learn the image emotion features via DCNNs and map the affective style on the other images. We set image emotion feature as the style target in this style transfer problem, and held experiments to handle affective image generation of eight emotion categories, including dignified, dreaming, sad, vigorous, soothing, exciting, joyous, and graceful. A user study was conducted to test the synesthesia emotional image style transfer result with ground truth user perception triggered by the music-image pairs' stimuli. The transferred affective image result for music-image emotional synesthesia perception was proved effective according to user study result.

  • This paper proposes a MIDI- and audio-based music genre classification method for Korean traditional music. There are many traditional instruments in Korea, and most of the traditional songs played using the instruments have similar patterns and rhythms. Although music information processing such as music genre classification and audio melody extraction have been studied, most studies have focused on pop, jazz, rock, and other universal genres. There are few studies on Korean traditional music because of the lack of datasets. This paper analyzes raw audio and MIDI phrases in Korean traditional music, performed using Korean traditional musical instruments. The classified samples and MIDI, based on our classification system, will be used to construct a database or to implement our Kontakt-based instrument library. Thus, we can construct a management system for a Korean traditional music library using this classification system. Appropriate feature sets for raw audio and MIDI phrases are proposed and the classification results-based on machine learning algorithms such as support vector machine, multi-layer perception, decision tree, and random forest-are outlined in this paper.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop the Korean version of Music-Related Quality of Life (K-MRQoL) for the elderly. The K-MRQoL consisted of Musical Ability, Attitude, Activity Frequency (PART 1) and Musical Ability, Attitude, Activity Important (PART 2). Each subcategory consists of Music Perception with 11 items and Music Engagement with 7 items. The validity and reliability of K-MRQoL were measured with Pearson's and Cronbach's alpha correlation coefficients and Independent t-test in total 30 elderly with normal hearing and 30 elderly with hearing loss from local welfare Centers and nursing homes. The correlation coefficients between total scores and PART 1 and PART 2 ranged from .701 to .948 and from .598 to .926, respectively. The internal consistency between total and Part 1 and Part 2 ranged from .846 to .931 and from .838 to .918, respectively. The test-retest correlations were .979, .970, and 979 for total, PART 1, and PART 2, respectively. The correlation between K-MRQoL and Quality of Communication Life Scale was .449. There were significant differences in total, PART 1, and PART 2 between the elderly with normal hearing and hearing loss. This indicates that the K-MRQoL can be used as a useful clinical tool to evaluate Music-related Quality of Life in the elderly with normal hearing or hearing loss.

  • Purpose: By studying the effects of SNS advertising characteristics and SNS advertising music characteristics conducted by companies on advertising preference and advertising effects, we would like to suggest a plan for effective SNS advertising operation. Research design, data and methodology: In this study, a total of 483 surveys were collected for college student consumers in their 20s who had experience seeing advertisements on SNS, and 458 were used for the final analysis. In addition, the collected questionnaire data were analyzed using statistical programs SPSS 24.0 and AMOS 24.0, and Sobel Test was performed through structural equation modeling and regression analysis. Results: Advertising preference, purchase, and recommendation intentions increased as consumers who saw advertisements on SNS perceived the characteristics of advertisements (information, entertainment, individuality, and interactivity). However, advertising preference was not formed by SNS advertising music characteristics (fun, information delivery, unconscious stimulation, and emotional homogeneity). In addition, the higher the perception of SNS advertising music characteristics (fun, information delivery, unconscious stimulation, and emotional homogeneity), the more advertising effects such as purchase and recommendation intentions were linked, and the higher the perception of SNS advertising music characteristics (fun, information delivery, unconscious stimulation, and emotional homogeneity), the more advertising effects such as purchase and recommendation intentions could be created. Finally, it was confirmed that advertising preference had a partial mediating effect between SNS advertising characteristics and advertising effects, and between SNS advertising music characteristics and advertising effects. Conclusions: Unlike previous studies that have investigated the causal relationship of advertising effects according to sub-factors such as SNS advertising characteristics and SNS advertising music characteristics, it is significant in that it analyzes the variables used in the study as secondary factors.
