The paper reports results of recent studies on the effects of column support conditions on the lateral displacements of moment frames at incipient collapse. The article presents a number of exercises in the plastic theory of structures that lead to useful design formulae. It has been shown that Drift Shifting (DS) is caused due to differences in the stiffnesses of adjoining columns, and that changes in drift ratios are more pronounced at first level column joints in both fixed as well as pinned base frames. In well proportioned moment frames, DS in the upper levels could be minimized, even reduced to zero. It has been demonstrated that DS can be eliminated in properly designed fixed and grade beam supported (GBS) moment frames. Several examples, including symbolic P-delta effects, have been provided to demonstrate the validity and the applications of the proposed ideas to the design and drift control of moment frames. The proposed methodology is exact within the bounds of the theoretical assumptions and is well suited for preliminary design and teaching purposes.

In this paper, a method of substructural identification is presented for the estimation of localized structural parameters. for this purpose, an auto-regressive and moving average with stochastic input (ARMAX) model is derived for the substructure to process the measurement data impaired by noises. The sequential prediction error method is used fer the estimation of unknown localized parameters. Using the substructural method, the number of unknown parameters can be reduced and the convergence and accuracy of estimation can be improved. For some substructures, the effect of the input excitation is expressed in terms of the responses at the inferences with the main structure, and substructural identification may be carried out without measuring the actual input excitation to the whole structure. Example analysis is carried out for idealized structural models of a multistory building and a truss bridge. The results indicate that the present method is effective and efficient for local damage estimation of complex structures.
The inelastic earthquake response of non-symmetric, braced steel buildings, designed according to the EC3 (steel structures) and EC8 (earthquake resistant design) codes, is investigated using 1, 3 and 5-story models, subjected to a set of 10, two-component, semi-artificial motions, generated to match the design spectrum. It is found that in these buildings, the so-called "flexible" edge frames exhibit higher ductility demands and interstory drifts than the "stiff" edge frames. We note that the same results were reported in an earlier study for reinforced concrete buildings and are the opposite of what was predicted in several other studies based on the over simplified, hence very popular, one-story, shear-beam type models. The substantial differences in such demands between the two sides suggest a need for reassessment of the pertinent code provisions. In a follow up paper, a design modification will be introduced that can lead to a more uniform distribution of ductility demands in the elements of all building edges. This investigation is another step towards more rational design of non-symmetric steel buildings.
In this paper, the influence of the rotational component, about a vertical axis, of earthquake ground motion on the response of building structures subjected to seismic action is considered. The torsional component of ground motion is generated from the records of translational components. Torsional component of ground motion is then, together with translational components, applied in numerical linear dynamic analysis of different reinforced concrete framed structure of three stories buildings. In total, more than 40 numerical models were created and analyzed. The obtained results show clearly the dependence of the effects of the torsional seismic component on structural system and soil properties. Thus, the current approach in seismic codes of accounting for the effects of accidental torsion due to the torsional ground motion, by shifting the center of mass, should be reevaluated.
The vertical axis through the modal center of rigidity (m-CR) is used for interpreting the code torsional provisions in the design of eccentric multi-story building structures. The concept of m-CR has been demonstrated by the author in an earlier paper and the particular feature of this point is that when the vertical line of the centers of mass at the floor levels is passing through m-CR, minimum base torsion is developed. For this reason the aforesaid axis is used as reference axis for implementing the code provisions required by the equivalent static analysis. The study examines uniform mixed-bent-type multistory buildings with simple eccentricity, ranging from torsionally stiff to torsionally flexible systems. Using the results of a dynamic response spectrum analysis as a basis for comparisons, it is shown that the results of the code static design are on the safe side in torsionally stiff buildings, but unable to predict the required strength of bents on the stiff side of systems with a predominantly torsional response. Suggestions are made for improving the code provisions in such cases.

To evaluate the seismic performance of multistory building structures use an equivalent SDOF model to represent the resistance of the structure to deformation as it respond in its predominant mode. This paper presents a method of converting a MDOF system into an equivalent SDOF model. The principal objective of this investigation is to evaluate appropriateness of converting method through perform nonlinear time history analysis of a multistory building structures and an equivalent SDOF model. The hysteresis rules to be used an equivalent SDOF model is obtained from the pushover analysis. Comparing the peak inelastic response of a moment resisting reinforced concrete frames and an equivalent SDOF model, the adequacy and the validity of the converting method is verified. The conclusion of this study is following; A method of converting a MDOF system into an equivalent SDOF model through the nonlinear time history response analysis is valid. The representative lateral displacement of a moment resisting reinforced concrete frames is close to the height of the first modal participation vector \ulcorner$_1{\beta}$${_1{\mu}}=1$. It can be found that the hysteresis rule of an equivalent SDOF model have influence on the time history response. Therefore, it necessary for selecting hysteresis rules to consider hysteresis characteristics of a moment resisting reinforced concrete frames.
In high multistory reinforced concrete buildings, coupled shear walls can provide an efficient structural system to resist horizontal force due to wind and seismic effects. Coupled shear walls are usually built over the whole height of the building and re laid out either as a series of walls coupled by beams and/or slabs or a central core structure with openings to accommodate doors, elevators walls, windows and corridors. A number of recent studies have focused on examining the seismic response of concrete, steel, and composite coupling beams. However, since no specific equations are available for computing the bearing strength of steel coupling beam-wall connections, it is necessary to develop such strength equations. There were carried out analytical and experimental studies to develop the strength equations of steel coupling beam-connections. Experiments were conducted to determine the factors influencing the bearing strength of the steel coupling beam-wall connection. The results of the proposed equations were in good agreement with both test results and other test data from the literature. Finally, this paper provides background for design guidelines that include a design model to calculate the bearing strength of steel coupling beam-wall connections.
In case of this thick rolling-steel for a multistory building, a large oil-drilling structure, a large vessel, a bridge and so on, Lamella Tearing around the welded joint zone is the most serious problems. In order to prevent Lamella Tearing, not only is choice of material important, but also the comprehensive investigation for the structural design and the construction. The Lamella Tearing that is a staircase-shape occurs due to the contraction stress to the thickness direction of the plate and has the character that the cracks progress along the elongated inclusion by rolling. In general, because cracks occur at the heat affected zone and around HAZ, it is necessary to establish the safety and the confidence of the welded structure to restrain the welding defect such as Lamella Tearing. The mechanical approaches are the easier and more economical than the approaches of the material and the construction method. In addition, the appropriate welding profile and the optimum welding condition contribute toward the improvement of the productivity and influence on the standardization of the manufacturing technology.
The present contribution addresses the parallelization of advanced simulation methods for structural reliability analysis, which have recently been developed for large-scale structures with a high number of uncertain parameters. In particular, the Line Sampling method and the Subset Simulation method are considered. The proposed parallel algorithms exploit the parallelism associated with the possibility to simultaneously perform independent FE analyses. For the Line Sampling method a parallelization scheme is proposed both for the actual sampling process, and for the statistical gradient estimation method used to identify the so-called important direction of the Line Sampling scheme. Two parallelization strategies are investigated for the Subset Simulation method: the first one consists in the embarrassingly parallel advancement of distinct Markov chains; in this case the speedup is bounded by the number of chains advanced simultaneously. The second parallel Subset Simulation algorithm utilizes the concept of speculative computing. Speedup measurements in context with the FE model of a multistory building (24,000 DOFs) show the reduction of the wall-clock time to a very viable amount (<10 minutes for Line Sampling and ${\approx}$ 1 hour for Subset Simulation). The measurements, conducted on clusters of multi-core nodes, also indicate a strong sensitivity of the parallel performance to the load level of the nodes, in terms of the number of simultaneously used cores. This performance degradation is related to memory bottlenecks during the modal analysis required during each FE analysis.
In a nonlinear finite element study on the mechanical behavior of simple beam connections to continuous concrete-filled steel tube columns, two principally different connection types were analyzed: one with plates attached to the outside of the tube wall, relying on shear transfer, and one with an extended plate inserted through the steel section to ensure bearing on the concrete core. The load was applied partly at the connection within the column length and partly at the top, representing the load from upper stories of a multistory building. The primary focus was on the increased demand for load transfer to ensure composite action when concrete with higher compressive strength is used. The results obtained from the analyses showed that the design bond strength derived from push tests is very conservative, mainly due to the high frictional shear resistance offered by pinching and contraction effects caused by connection rotation. However, with higher concrete strength the demand for load transfer increases, and is hard to fulfill for higher loads when connections are attached only to the steel section. Instead, the connection should penetrate into the concrete core to distribute load to the concrete by direct bearing.
