  • In recent, as many applications of sensor networks increase, various techniques have been studied to efficiently operate network systems. The query optimization scheme that is one of such techniques has been studied to reduce the data transmission cost. The data transmission is of great importance to the energy consumption of sensor networks. In this paper, we propose an energy-efficient multiple queries processing scheme by sharing sensor readings for multiple queries, when they are occurred in sensor networks. The proposed scheme reduces unnecessary data transmissions among the sensor nodes by intuitively identifying their locations using the grid structure. It also efficiently shares the data by recognizing the redundant regions of sensor nodes. In order to show the superiority of the proposed scheme, we compare it with the existing scheme in various experiments. As the result, the proposed scheme reduces about 65% energy consumption over the existing scheme.

  • As sensor technology grows up in fields such as environmental hazards detecting system, ubiquitous sensor network, intelligent robot, the sensing and detecting system for sensor is increasing. The sensor data is measured by change of chemical and physical status. Because of decrepit sensor or various sensing environment, it is problem that sensor data is inaccurate result. So the reliability of sensor data is essential. In this paper, we proposes a reliable sensor signal processing platform for various sensor. To improve reliability, we use same sensors in multiple array structure. As sensor data is corrected by spatial and temporal relation signal processing algorithm for measured sensor data, reliability of sensor data can be improved. The exclusive protocol between platform components is designed in order to verify sensor data and sensor state in various environment.

  • In this paper, authors propose the sensor fusion system that can recognize multiple 3D objects from 2D projection images and tactile information. The proposed system focuses on improving recognition performance of 3D object. Unlike the conventional object recognition system that uses image sensor alone, the proposed method uses tactual sensors in addition to visual sensor. Neural network is used to fuse these informations. Tactual signals are obtained from the reaction force by the pressure sensors at the fingertips when unknown objects are grasped by four-fingered robot hand. The experiment evaluates the recognition rate and the number of teaming iterations of various objects. The merits of the proposed systems are not only the high performance of the learning ability but also the reliability of the system with tactual information for recognizing various objects even though visual information has a defect. The experimental results show that the proposed system can improve recognition rate and reduce learning time. These results verify the effectiveness of the proposed sensor fusion system as recognition scheme of 3D object.

  • Earlier researches on Sensor Networks preferred symmetric key-based authentication schemes in consideration of limitations in network resources. However, recent advancements in cryptographic algorithms and sensor-node manufacturing techniques have opened suggestion to public key-based solutions such as Merkle tree-based schemes. These previous schemes, however, must perform the authentication process one-by-one in hierarchical manner and thus are not fit to be used as primary authentication methods in sensor networks which require mass of multiple authentications at any given time. This paper proposes a new concept of public key-based authentication that can be effectively applied to sensor networks. This scheme is based on exponential distributed data concept, a derivative from Shamir's (t, n) threshold scheme, in which the authentication of neighbouring nodes are done simultaneously while minimising resources of sensor nodes and providing network scalability. The performance advantages of this scheme on memory usage, communication overload and scalability compared to Merkle tree-based authentication are clearly demonstrated using performance analysis.

  • In this study, a framework for web-based information system in VDN environment for safety and health monitoring in subway stations is suggested. Since physical variables that describing safety and health need to be closely monitored in multiple locations in subway stations, concept of distributed monitoring network using wireless media needs to be implemented. Connecting remote wireless sensor network and device (LonWorks) networks to the IP network based on the concept of VDN can provide a powerful, integrated and distributed monitoring performance, making a web-based information system possible.

  • In the environment with multiple heterogeneous wireless sensor networks with a single point of sensed data collection or a gateway (GW), relay points (RPs) may be required for the energy efficient delivery of sensed data from static or mobile sinks to the GW. The optimal placement of RPs becomes an even more difficult problem if static sinks are dynamically added or the trajectory of mobile sinks can not be known in advance. In order to resolve this problem, we propose a mechanism to deploy RPs in a grid pattern and to use the tree-based relaying network for reducing the cost of the RP and for reducing the control overhead incurred by the route setup from sinks to the GW. For the performance evaluation of our proposed mechanism, we have carried out a numerical analysis on a single route setup from a sink to the GW and, for more general performance evaluations, ns-2 based simulations have been carried out. According to the performance evaluation results, our tree-based relaying network mechanism outperforms that based on AODV in terms of the data delivery time, the network service time and the control overhead.

  • This paper has researched water supply facilities management using real-time water utility monitoring system based on USN(Ubiquitous Sensor Network) which is consisted of wireless sensors transferring waterworks facilities md treatment information about a valve-room and flowmeter-room of water supply installation. In the manholes, it was installed with flowmeter, pressure sensors, vibration sensors, Co-sensors, and hydro-thermograph sensors. These measurement values which are received by PDA are used for facilities operation on the spot safely and conveniently. It has also provided safe installation management via CDMA(Code Division Multiple Access) network which transfers data to remote servers to monitoring at a distance place. With safety management system of water supply facilities on USN technology convenience and safety is increased in real situation, and it is expected that we can supply clean water to people as much safer and more effective water supply installation management.

  • This paper introduces a novel sensor network protocol, R-WSLP(Realtime Wireless Sensor Line Protocol), which has extremely low latency characteristic in large-scale WSN. R-WSLP is proposed to implement realtime forest fire monitoring system. We propose Distributed TDMA method for the multiple channel access and Time Synchronized Forwarding Mechanism instead of routing technique to achieve low latency network. Also, R-WSLP provides extremely low power operation which we accomplished by reducing idle listening. In our experimentation, we get successful results at the forest fire monitoring system with our protocol.

  • We introduce an indoor broadcasting system using light-emitting diode (LED) lamps coupled with a 220 V power line. Two couplers connected to the power line constitute a power line communication (PLC) link. The transmission path from an LED lamp to a photodetector forms a visible light communication (VLC) link in free space. When the LED lamp is coupled to the power line, a composite PLC-VLC link is formed, making it possible to transmit a VLC signal beyond line-of-sight. In experiments, a 4 kHz analog signal modulated with a 100 kHz carrier was sent to the power line by a PLC coupler, and LED lamps coupled to the power line detected the signal and radiated it to multiple VLC receivers in the room. This configuration is useful in expanding an indoor VLC sensor network to adjacent rooms or constructing a voice broadcasting system in a building or apartments with existing power lines.

  • Wireless multimedia sensor networks (WMSNs) require real-time quality-of-service (QoS) guarantees to be provided by the network. The end-to-end delay is very critical metric for QoS guarantees in WMSNs. In WMSNs, due to the transmission errors incurred over wireless channels, it is difficult to obtain reliable delivery of data in conjunction with low end-to-end delay. In order to improve the end-to-end delay performance, the system has to drop few packets during network congestion. In this article, our proposal is based on optimization of end-to end delay for WMSNs. We optimize end-to-end delay constraint by assuming that each packet is allowed fixed number of retransmissions. To optimize the end-to-end delay, first, we compute the performance measures of the system, such as end-to-end delay and reliability for different network topologies (e.g., linear topology, tree topology) and against different choices of system parameters (e.g., data rate, number of nodes, number of retransmissions). Second, we study the impact of the end-to-end delay and packet delivery ratio on indoor and outdoor environments in WMSNs. All scenarios are simulated with multiple run-times by using network simulator-2 (NS-2) and results are evaluated and discussed.
