  • The authors have interpreted one patient's full mJuth intra-oral films, oblique- lateral film of the left mandible and orthopantomograph which revealed 6 radicular and 1 residual cysts. As a results of interpretation of these serial films, we have drawn following conclusions: 1. Radicular cyst arose from the cell rests contained in an apical granuloma which was sequel to advanced pulpitis due to dental caries. 2. Residual cyst was developed from remaining cell rests after the extraction of a tooth with such a radicular cyst or apical dental granuloma. 3. Cyst grew in size by absorption of fluid into cystic cavity due to difference in osmotic pressure between the cystic fluid and adjacent tissue fluid.

  • The glandular odontogenic cyst (GOC) is a rare cyst derived from odontogenic epithelium with a spectrum of characteristics including salivary gland features. It occurs more commonly in the mandible and most often in the anterior mandible. Radiographically, most cases present a well-defined unilocular or multilocular radiolucency with a cortical boundary. Despite no unique or pathognomonic clinical or radiographic features, the lesion shows potentially aggressive behavior. A 76-year-old male was referred to Gangneung-Wonju National University Dental Hospital with a chief complaint of slight swelling of the right mandible. Cone-beam computed tomography examination revealed a unilocular radiolucent lesion involving impacted third molar at the right posterior mandible. Slight lingual cortical thinning with suspected perforation was also shown. Histopathologically, multiple areas of cyst epithelium showed a glandular differentiation, resulting in mucoid-filled secretory cells and microcyst. Based on these findings, the final diagnosis was determined to be GOC.

  • Radicular cyst is the most common odontogenic cyst occurring in the jaws. The cyst is commonly found in relation to the maxillary anterior teeth in the third and fifth decade of life. Although multiple radicular cysts are not uncommon in the jaws, bilaterally symmetrical representation of these cysts is rare. Radiographs prior to extraction help in diagnosis of these cysts and thereby prevent further morbidities. We report a case of 16-year-old male patient who presented bilateral radicular cysts symmetrically in the mandible.

  • Multiple jaw cysts are one of the most constant features of the basal cell nevus syndrome. Basal cell nevus syndrome is inherited as an autosomal dominant trait with variable expressiveness. This syndrome comprises a number of abnormalities such as multiple nevoid basal cell carcinomas of the skin, skeletal abnormalities as bifid rib and fusion of vertebrae, central nervous system abnormalities as mental retardation, eye abnormalities with multiple jaw cysts. The odontogenic keratocysts in patients with this syndrome are often associated with the crowns of unerupted teeth and huge size; on radiographs they may mimic dentigerous cysts. The most important feature of the cyst is its extraordinary recurrence rate. Since recurrence may be long delayed in this lesion, follow-up of any case of odontogenic keratocyst with roentgenograms and clinical examination of basal cell carcinoma are essential for at least five years after surgery. We report the result of 7-year follow up after cyst enucleation associated with basal cell nevus syndrome with the literature of review.

  • A 35-year-old man was referred to the department of Oral and maxillofacial surgery of Chonnam university hospital for the chief complaint of asymptomatic swelling on the buccal vestibule of upper right canine area. Radiographs revealed that the upper right canine was impacted and there was a well-circumscribed pericoronal radiolucency related with the canine. Multiple radiopaque foci were scattered in the radiolucent lesion, and the roots of the lateral incisor and the first premolar related to the lesion showed external resorption. The radiographic features of this lesion were typical of adenomatoid odontogenic tumor, but considering the gender and age of the patient, the tentative diagnosis was made as calcifying odontogenic cyst. Microscopically this lesion was diagnosed as calcifying odontogenic cyst. Because calcifying odontogenic cyst has no pathognomonic feature of radiographs, to consider radiographic features with clinical findings is necessary in order to establish more correct diagnosis.

  • Primary renal echinococcosis, a rare disease involving the kidney, accounts for 2-3% of human echinococcosis. A 64-year-old female patient from Uzbekistan presented with complaints of left flank pain. A CT scan revealed a cystic mass in the upper to midpole of the left kidney. We regarded this lesion as a renal malignancy and hand-assisted laparoscopic radical nephrectomy was performed to remove the renal mass. The mass consisted of a large unilocular cyst and multiple smaller cysts without any grossly visible renal tissue. The final pathologic diagnosis was a renal hydatid cyst. For patients from endemic areas, hydatid cyst should be included in the differential diagnosis. Here, we present a case of renal hydatid cyst in a female patient who relocated from Uzbekistan to Korea.

  • To examine the prevalence and types of kidney lesions in Korean cattle, a survey was carried out at a abattoir in september 2000 and January 2001. The collected kidneys were examined grossly and histopathologically and investigated for the patterns of renal diseases with considering season and sex. Of 735 cattle (99 bulls and 246 cows in September and 140 bulls, 3 steers, and 247 cows in January) surveyed, 301 (41%) cattle had various renal lesions. The most common prominent finding was focal or multiple interstitial nephritis (36.2%). Other lesions included focal or multiple renal cyst (9.1%), infarction (0.1%), hemorrhage (0.3%), and renal atrophy (0.3%). Microscopically, main pathological lesions were acute or chronic interstitial nephritis with moderate infiltration of neutrophil or lymphocyte, respectively. Finally, the kidney lesions are more or less correlated with the meat quality, especially in female Korean cattle.

  • A radiologic study of 139 dentigerous cysts (128 patients) indicated the followings: 1. There was higher incidence in males (62.99%) than in females (37.01%). The most common age group was 11-20 years and the average age was 23.6 years. 2. The most common clinical symptoms was swelling of the jaws (49 cases, 33.09%), and no symptoms was presented in 26 cases (18.71%). 3. Dentigerous cysts were found to be slightly more common in the maxilla (53.24%) than in the mandible (46.76%) and there was almost no difference in occurance between right and left side. The maxillary supernumerary tooth was the most frequent site of the dentigerous cyst and no dentigerous cyst was found to be related to a deciduous tooth. 4. The most common radiographic findings was root resorption of the adjacent teeth (33.09%), and the central dentigerous cysts were 78 cases (56.12%), the lateral dentigerous cysts were 61 cases (43.88%). 5. The increased radiolucency at the crown portion of the tooth in a cystic cavity was seen in 44 cases (31.65%), and a case of dentigerous cyst was found in a edentulous patient, and 16 cases of multiple dentigerous cysts were found in 5 patients. 6. The ameloblastic changes in 8 cases, the keratinization of the cyst wall in 2 cases, and a case of epidermoid carcinoma were confirmed microscopically.
