  • In programming classes, there is always a need to efficiently manage programming assignments. This is especially important as class sizes and assignment complexity grows. GitHub and GitHub Classroom makes the management of student assignments much simpler than uploading files and folders to a LMS or shared online drive. Additionally, git and GitHub are industry standard tools, so introducing students these tools in class provides them a good opportunity to start learning about how software is developed in the real-world. This study describes a workflow that uses both GitHub Pages and GitHub Classroom for more efficient classroom and assignment management. The workflow outlined in this study was used in two practical web programming classes in Spring 2023 with 46 third and fourth-year university students. GitHub Pages was used as a classroom website to distribute class announcements, assignments, lecture slides, study guides, and exams. GitHub Classroom was used as a class roster and assignment management platform. The workflow presented in this study is expected to assist other lecturers with the formidable tasks of distributing, collecting, grading, and leaving feedback on multiple students' multi-file programming assignments in practical programming classes.

  • In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic has brought dramatic changes in the field of engineering education. Contrary to the traditional engineering education emphasis on content-oriented, design-based, hands-on, experimental, and field experience, most of engineering classes in 2020 had to be undertaken remotely online. However, it has not been explored how professors and students perceive about such a shift in engineering education. The aim of the current study was to investigate the perceptions of professors and students on online classes in engineering colleges during spring Semester 2020. Questionnaire data were collected from 100 professors and 4,152 students in the college of engineering. The results of this study were as following: Students were less satisfied with the online classes than professors. The online lecture method that students were most satisfied with was the recorded lecture. This is likely due to the fact that the recorded lectures can be repeated multiple times anytime, anywhere. Moreover, the experimental classes, which conventionally has more of an emphasis on the hands-on experience, also had to be conducted remotely, showing even lower satisfaction among students. Most of professors reported that the average hours they spent on preparing for online lecture increased compared to face-to-face class. Both professors and students preferred in-person exam as a desirable method of end-of-semester assessment for grading. The results of the current study have important implications for the improvement of online course environments. It is important for professors to design a structured class suitable for online education and understand the challenges students encounter during online classes. Also, professors should communicate more openly about their expectations and rubrics for class goals and assignments. Schools also needs to make effort to provide the support for the internet environment of students.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine how basic psychological needs of elementary school physical education classes influence school happiness and physically active lifestyles. Questionnaires were distributed to 300 elementary schoolers in five elementary schools in I city. After excluding 22 incomplete questionnaires, a total of 278 questionnaires were used for data analysis. For data analysis, descriptive analysis, exploratory factor analysis, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis were used. Correlation analysis revealed that the competence and relatedness of basic psychological needs are positively correlated with all the subsets of school happiness and moderate-vigorous physical activity. Multiple regression showed that the competence of basic psychological needs positively predicted self-respect and relationships with teachers of school happiness and also predicted moderate-vigorous physical activity. Multiple regression also showed that the relatedness of basic psychological needs positively predicted all the subsets of school happiness. The findings indicate the importance of basic psychological needs in physical education classes on school happiness and physically active lifestyles. Thorough this research, it is hoped that the values of physical education classes in elementary schools increase.

  • We address the frequency management in the IMT-2000 CDMA system. The system characteristics such as multiple classes of services, multiple kinds of channels with different bandwidths, overlaid cell structure, etc. are examined to make way for the problem definition. The problem is formulated as a constrained optimization model, the objective of which is to consume as narrow bandwidth as possible while satisfying various multimedia demands with required QOSs. A solution algorithm is developed which generates two sets of optimal decisions: 1) which combination of service classes to assign to each cell, 2) which set of frequency channels of varying bandwidths to allocate to each cell. The effectiveness of the proposed deployment policy is demonstrated via computational experiments.

  • In this paper, double laxity threshold MLT(Minimum Laxity Threshold) algorithm and double queue threshold QLT(Queue Length Threshold) algorithm are proposed as DPS(Dynamic Priority Scheduling) techniques for advanced processing of multiple class traffics. Also, the performance of the proposed algorithms is analyzed by a computer simulation. According to the simulation results, it can be shown that the proposed double laxity threshold ML T algorithm advances the processing performance versus ML T algorithm for 2 or more classes delay sensitive traffics, and that double queue length threshold QL T algorithm provides more efficient performance than QL T for 2 or more classes of non real time traffics.

  • This study develops a new type of latent class analysis (LCA) in order to explain the associations between one latent variable and several other categorical latent variables. Our model postulates that the prevalence of the latent variable of interest is affected by another latent variable composed of other several latent variables. For the parameter estimation, we propose deterministic annealing EM (DAEM) to deal with local maxima problem in the proposed model. We perform simulation study to demonstrate how DAEM can find the set of parameter estimates at the global maximum of the likelihood over the repeated samples. We apply the proposed LCA model in an investigation of the effect of and joint patterns for drug-using behavior to violent behavior among US high school male students using data from the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System 2015. Considering the age of male adolescents as a covariate influencing violent behavior, we identified three classes of violent behavior and three classes of drug-using behavior. We also discovered that the prevalence of violent behavior is affected by the type of drug used for drug-using behavior.

  • SVM (Support vector machine) analysis was performed after applying a deep learning technique based on an Inception-based model (GoogLeNet). The accuracy of automatic image classification was analyzed using an SVM with multiple virtual grid sizes. Six classes were selected from a standard land cover map. Cars were added as a separate item to increase the classification accuracy of roads. The virtual grid size was 2-5 m for natural areas, 5-10 m for traffic areas, and 10-15 m for building areas, based on the size of items and the resolution of input images. The results demonstrate that automatic classification accuracy can be increased by adopting an integrated approach that utilizes weighted virtual grid sizes for different classes.

  • In this paper. we propose a storage system for XML documents using relational databases. Additional processing is required to store XML documents in the relational databases due to the discrepancy between XML structures and relational schema. This study aims to store XML documents with DTD in the relational databases. We propose the association inlining that exploits shred inlining and hybrid inlining and avoids relation fragments and excessive joins. Experiments show some improvements in the performance with the proposed method. The information of the storage structures is extracted from the simplified DTD. Existing map classes are extended in order to map various structures of XML to relational schema. Map classes are defined for various structures such as elements with multiple values, elements with multiple super elements, and elements with recursive structures through analyzing XML documents. Map files that are XML structures and used in generating SQL statements are created by using the extracted information of storage structures and map classes.

  • This study examined the influencing factors of learning satisfaction for real-time online adult nursing classes to provide basic data for the design and operation of online lectures in nursing subjects and help prepare a new educational paradigm. The subjects of the study were 105 3rd graders taking real-time online adult nursing classes, and data collection was conducted through structured online questionnaires from June 20 to July 30, 2020. The subjects were analyzed using a t-test, one-way ANOVA by Scheffe test, Person's correlation coefficients, and Hierarchical multiple regression analysis. The results showed that the learning flow was 3.07, academic engagement was 3.46, and learning satisfaction was 3.88. Learning satisfaction showed a positive correlation with learning flow (r=.41, p<.001) and academic engagement (r=.56, p<.001). In addition, the factors influencing the learning satisfaction of the subjects of this study were academic engagement (=.47), very high in the level of interest in adult nursing classes (=.21), and high (=.20) followed by 34% (F=14.53, p<.001). Therefore, the learning outcomes of nursing students and the effective achievement of their learning goals are expected by developing plans and teaching methods for active participation in classes.
