  • This paper proposes a new switching scheme of a static var compensator(SVC) with cascade multilevel inverter which employs H-bridge inverter(HBI). To improve the unbalanced problem of the DC capacitor voltages, the rotated switching scheme of fundamental frequency is newly used. The optimized fundamental switching pattern with low switching frequency is adapted to be suitable for high application. The selective harmonic elimination method(SHEM) allows to keep the total harmonic distortion(THD) low in the output voltage of multilevel inverter. The SVC system is modeled using the d-q transform which calculates the instantaneous reactive power. This model is used to design a controller and analyze the SVC system. Simulated and experimental results are also presented and discussed to validate the proposed schemes.

  • An efficient sequential optimization approach for metamodel was presented by Choi et al. This paper describes a new approach of the multilevel optimization method studied in Refs. [2] and [20,21]. The basic idea is concerned with multilevel iterative methods which combine a descent scheme with a hierarchy of auxiliary problems in lower dimensional subspaces. After fitting a metamodel based on an initial space filling design, this model is sequentially refined by the expected improvement criterion. The advantages of the method are that it does not require optimum sensitivities, nonlinear equality constraints are not needed, and the method is relatively easy to understand and use. As a check on effectiveness, the proposed method is applied to an engineering example.

  • This paper describes the design and implementation of a new diode clamped multilevel inverter for variable frequency drive. The diode clamp multilevel inverter has been widely used for low power, high voltage applications due to its superior performance. However, it has some limitations such as increased number of switching devices and complex PWM control. In this paper, a new topology is proposed. New topology requires only (N-1) switching devices and (N-3) clamping diodes compared to existing topology. A modified APO-PWM control method is used to generate gate pulses for inverter. The proposed inverter topology is coupled with single phase induction motor and its performance is tested by MATLAB simulation. Finally, a prototype model has built and its performance is tested with single phase variable frequency drive.

  • A modular multilevel converter is widely adapted for a high-voltage direct current power transmission system. This study proposes a design methodology for a novel digital control that mitigates the negative effects caused by time delay, including communication transport delay for a modular multilevel converter. The modeling and negative effect of time delay are analyzed theoretically in a frequency domain, and its compensation methodology based on an inverse model is described fully with practical considerations. The proposed methodology is verified through several simulation results using a modular 21-level converter system.

  • Voltage source multilevel module converter attracts more and more attention recently. The core component of the voltage source multilevel module converter is the valve based on IGBT. So the test circuit for the valve is very important, reliable test method can guarantee the converter valve design meet the operation requirement. This paper analyzes the valve voltage and current stress during the operation, and according to IEC standard test requirement, object, condition, introduces a kind of test circuit. Finally, through the simulation model, to verify the test circuit can provide the proper test condition for the voltage source multilevel module converter valve.

  • In existing mobile computing environments, users need to choose between their privacy and the services that they can receive from an application. However, existing mobile platforms do not allow users to perform such trade-offs in a fine-grained manner. In this study, we investigate whether users can effectively make utility-privacy trade-offs when they are provided with a multilevel privacy control method that allows them to recognize the different quality of service that they will receive from an application by limiting the disclosure of their private information in multiple levels. We designed a research model to observe users' utility-privacy trade-offs in accordance with the privacy control methods and other factors such as the trustworthiness of an application, quality level of private information, and users' privacy preferences. We conducted a user survey with 516 participants and found that, compared with the existing binary privacy controls, both the service utility and the privacy protection levels were significantly increased when the users used the multilevel privacy control method.

  • The modular multilevel converter (MMC) has become a promising topology for high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission systems. To control a MMC system properly, the ac-side current, circulating current and submodule (SM) capacitor voltage are taken into consideration. This paper proposes a low-computation indirect model predictive control (IMPC) strategy that takes advantages of the conventional MPC and has no weighting factors. The cost function and duty cycle are introduced to minimize the tracking error of the ac-side current and to eliminate the circulating current. An optimized merge sort (OMS) algorithm is applied to keep the SM capacitor voltages balanced. The proposed IMPC strategy effectively reduces the controller complexity and computational burden. In this paper, a discrete-time mathematical model of a MMC system is developed and the duty ratio of switching state is designed. In addition, a simulation of an eleven-level MMC system based on MATLAB/Simulink and a five-level experimental setup are built to evaluate the feasibility and performance of the proposed low-computation IMPC strategy.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the risk-adjusted in-hospital mortality for craniotomies between logistic regression and multilevel analysis. By using patient sample data from the Health Insurance Review & Assessment Service, in-patients with a craniotomy were selected as the survey target. The sample data were collected from a total number of 2,335 patients from 90 hospitals. The sample data were analyzed with SAS 9.3. From the results of the existing logistic regression analysis and multilevel analysis, the values from the multilevel analysis represented a better model than that of logistic regression. The intra-class correlation (ICC) was 18.0%. It was found that risk-adjusted in-hospital mortality for craniotomies may vary in every hospital. The agreement by kappa coefficient between the two methods was good for the risk-adjusted in-hospital mortality for craniotomies, but the factors influencing the outcome for that were different.
