  • Effective elastic constants of biomimetic multilayer structures with hierarchical structures are evaluated based on the potential energy balance method. The effective anisotropic elastic constants are used in analyzing low-velocity impact of biomimetic multilayer structures consisting of mineral and protein. It is shown that displacements of biomimetic multilayer structures strongly depend on the volume fraction of mineral and hierarchical level. The effect of the volume fraction of mineral and hierarchical level on the contact force and stresses at the impact point are also discussed.

  • We present a method of using one-dimensional dielectric multilayer structures for designing terahertz frequency spreading filters. The interference of terahertz pulses in these structures composed of alternating weak and strong refractive materials allows design of well-separated THz frequency components within a modulation-limited THz spectral envelope. The design characteristics of these coarse THz combs are limited by the saturation effect and also by the deformation of the THz pulse time-traveling within the structure. The details of the designed THz waveform synthesis from these THz multilayer spectral filters are verified by experiments using time-domain terahertz pulsed spectroscopy.

  • Magnetron sputtered TiN, (Ti, Al)N and TiN/(Ti, Al)N multilayer coatings grown on cemented carbide substrates have been characterized by using electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron spectroscopy (SEM), nanoindentation, scratcher and cutting tests. Results show that TiN coating is bell mouth columnar structures, (Ti, Al)N coating is straight columnar structures and the modulation structure has been formed in the TiN/(Ti, Al)N multilayer coating. TiN/(Ti, Al)N multilayer coating exhibited higher hardness, better adhesion with substrate and excellent cutting performance compared with TiN and (Ti, Al)N coating.

  • Various types of multilayer coatings including Al/$Al_2O_3$ structure have been prepared on Nd-Fe-B permanent magnet to modify the morphology of the coating and to enhance the corrosion resistance of the magnet. Magnetron sputtering has been employed to make the multilayer coatings. $Al_2O_3$sputtering conditions were optimized in reactive sputtering by varying the deposition parameters. The formation of $Al_2O_3$ film was confirmed from the binding energy shift measured by electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis. 3 types of coating structures were designed and prepared by magnetron sputtering. The coating structures consist of (1) single Al coating, (2) modified coatings having oxide or plasma treated layer in the middle of coating structure, and (3) Al/$Al_2O_3$ multilayer coatings. Surface and cross-sectional morphologies showed that Al/$Al_2O_3$ multilayer grew as a layered structure, and that very compact Zone 3 like structure were formed. X-ray diffraction peak showed that the crystal orientations of multilayer coatings were similar to that of the bulk powder pattern. Hardness increased drastically when the Al thickness was around 1im in the Al/$Al_2O_3$ multilayer. From the salt spray test and pressure cooker test, it has been shown that the multilayer coatings showed good corrosion resistance compared to Al single or modified layer coatings.

  • SONAR detection performance is one of the key survivability factors in underwater weapon systems. In order to catch the acoustic ability of SONAR, multilayer SONAR structures are analyzed using the elastic theory. The applied results for the simple models are compared with those from commercial program, ANSYS, and the reliable results are obtained. The analysis of sound pressure level (SPL) and echo reduction (ER) by the thickness change of multilayer SONAR structures are performed using the verified elastic theory. As the thickness of anechoic layer is increased, SPL is distributed evenly and ER is increased slightly with the frequency. In decoupling layers and steel layers, SPL are hardly changed and ER is slightly decreased with the thickness increase of those layers. SPL and ER are not affected by the thickness change of the carbon reinforced plastic (CRP) layer. Therefore, to improve the acoustic ability of multilayer SONAR structures, the thickness increase of the anechoic layer and minimization of the decoupling layer, steel layer and CRP layer are desirable.

  • An integrated simulation tool for multilayer stepped pyramidal structures is presented. The tool, based on a semi-analytical mathematical strategy, is able to calculate the temperature distributions and thermal stresses at the interfaces between the layers of such structures. The core of the thermal solver is the analytical simulator for power electronic devices, DJOSER, which has been supplemented with a mechanical solver based on the finite-element method. To this end, a new ele-ment is proposed whose geometry is defined by its mean surface and thickness, just as in a plate. The resulting mechanical model is fully three-dimensional, in the sense that the deformability in the direction orthogonal to the mean surface is taken into account. The dedicated finite element code developed for solving the equilibrium problem of structures made up of two or more superimposed plates subjected to thermal loads is applied to some two-layer samples made of silicon and copper. Comparisons performed with the results of standard finite element analyses using a large number of brick elements reveal the soundness of the strategy employed and the accuracy of the tool developed.

  • We investigate spin transfer torque (STT) in magnetic multilayer structures using micromagnetic simulations. We implement the STT contribution for magnetic multilayer structures in addition to the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) micromagnetic simulators. In addition to the Sloncewski STT term, the zero, first, and second order field-like terms are also considered as well as the effects of the Oersted field due to the running current are addressed. We determine the switching current densities of the free layer with the exchange biased synthetic ferrimagnetic reference layers for various cases.

  • In this paper, the modeling and design of high-Q multilayer passives have been investigated, and multilayer diplexer for GSM/DCS applications has been designed and fabricated using the passives. To minimize the system, the configuration of a multilayer inductor has involved a square spiral structure. Modeling of a multilayer inductor was performed by the subsystems of distributed components, and using the modeling the optimal structures of the high-Q multilayer inductor could be designed by analyzing parasitics and couplings which affect their frequency characteristics. Multilayer diplexer for GSM/DCS application has been designed and fabricated using LTCC technology. LPF for GSM band had the passband insertion loss of less than 0.55 dB, the return loss of more than 12 dB, and the isolation level of more than 26 dB by locating attenuation pole at 1800 MHz. HPF for DCS band had the passband insertion loss of less than 0.82 dB, the return loss of more than 11 dB, and the isolation level of more than 38 dB by locating attenuation pole at 930 MHz.

  • The chalcogenide glasses of thin films have the superior property of photoinduced anisotrophy(PA). In this study, we observed the linear dichroism(D) using the irradiation with polarized He-Ne laser light, in the $Ag/As_{40}Ge_{10}Se_{15}S_{35}$ multi-layer. Mutilayer structures formed by alternating metal(Ag) a chalcogenide$(As_{40}Ge_{10}Se_{15}S_{35})$. Such multilayer structures have a greater sensitivity to illumination am larger dichroism in comparison the conventional double layer structure. Also new phenomena are discovered. These results will be show a capability of new method that suggested more improvement of photoinduced anisotropy property.
