It is important to measure the mechanical properties of nanostructures because they are required to determine the lifetime and reliability of nanodevices developed for various fields. In this study, tensile tests for a multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) and a ZnO nanorod were performed in a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The force sensor was a cantilever type and was mounted in front of a nanomanipulator placed in the chamber. The nanomanipulator was controlled using a joystick and personal computer. The nanostructures dispersed on the cut area of a transmission electron microscope (TEM) grid were gripped with the force sensor by exposing an electron beam in the SEM; the tensile tests were the performed. The in situ tensile loads of the nanostructure were obtained. After the tensile test, the cross-sectional areas of the nanostructures were observed by TEM and SEM. Based on the TEM and SEM results, the elastic modulus of the MWCNT and ZnO nanorod were calculated to be 0.98 TPa and 55.85 GPa, respectively.
In this study, a MWCNT(multi-wall carbon nanotube) was added to polysulfone(PSf) support layer to improve flux of TFC(thin film composite) RO(reverse osmosis) membrane. Two different kinds of MWCNT were used. Surfaces of some MWCNTs were modified hydrophilically through acid treatment, while those of other MWCNTs were modified through heat treatment to maintain their hydrophobicity. MWCNT/PSf support layer was prepared by adding PSf to the NMP mixed solvent containing 0.1 wt% MWCNTs using a phase inversion method. The surface porosity of the MWCNT/PSf support increased by 42~46% while its surface pore size being maintained. The TFC RO membrane made of MWCNT/PSf support layer showed a 20% flux increase while its salt rejection characteristics is sustained. In addition, the MWCNT/PSf support layer has better mechanical stability than the PSf support layer, there resulting in an increased resistance of flux reduction due to physical pressure.
This paper describes the preparation of manufacturing a new nanocomposite material, which involves adding a multi walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) to improve thermal characteristics of poly (ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) (EVA). We irradiated the prepared nanocomposites with doses of 50 kGy, 100 kGy and 200 kGy at a dose rate of $5kGy\;hr^{-1}$ and examined their thermal stability, activation energy and crosslink level by using a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) and gel fraction experiments. TGA results indicated that the samples with a MWCNT had higher Derivative Thermo Gravimetry (DTG) 2nd peak temperatures than those without a MWCNT. And activation energy of the samples reduced as the absorption dose and the MWCNT content increased. Finally, the gel fraction increased rapidly up to 100 kGy as total absorption dose increased, and then the growth rate of all samples was slowly increased from 100 kGy.
CNT-$TiO_{2}$ nano complexes were prepared from $TiOSO_4$ and multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) by hydrolysis. The CNTs were dispersed uniformly with anatase $TiO_{2}$ in the prepared $TiO_{2}$-CNT complexes. The increasing MWCNT ratio leads to increased crystalline carbon and O/Ti ratio. The decomposition degree of methylene blue was experienced according to UV radiation time for study adsorption and photocatalytic activity. The samples having high MWCNT ratio show high adsorption and photodegradation. The high specific surface area, functional group having oxygen, low band gap energy, high electric conductivity, high volume to surface ratio, uniform structure and properties of MWCNT assist photocatalytic activity of CNT-$TiO_{2}$ complex.

In this study, we fabricated $NO_x$ gas sensor by using multi-walled carbon nanotubes(MWCNT)/zinc oxide(ZnO) composite film. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have good electronic, chemical-stability, and sensitivity characteristics. And zinc oxide (ZnO) is a wide band gap and large exciton binding energy semiconductor. In particular, gas sensors require characteristics such as high speed, sensitivity, and selectivity. The fabricated gas sensor was used to detect $NO_x$ gas for different values of the $NO_x$ gas concentrations. The gas sensor that absorbed$NO_x$ gas molecules showed a increasing in resistance. The sensitivity of the gas sensor was increased by increasing the gas concentrations. Additionally, while changing the temperature inside the chamber for the MWCNT/ZnO composite film gas sensor, we obtained the sensitivity. And the comparison analysis to ZnO film gas sensor for detecting $NO_x$ gas. From the experiment result, we confirmed improvement of $NO_x$ gas detection characteristics using the MWCNT/ZnO composite film.
In this study, polyethylene oxide (PEO)/polyethylene-co-vinyl acetate (EVA)/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)-COOH composite membranes were prepared by adding 1, 2, 3, and 5 wt% of MWCNT-COOH to PEO/EVA respectively. The gas permeation properties of $N_2$, $O_2$ and $CO_2$ at $30^{\circ}C$ and 4~8 bar pressure were investigated. In each PEO/EVA/MWCNT-COOH composite membranes, the permeability of $CO_2$ increased with increasing the pressure, but the permeability of $N_2$ and $O_2$ were independent of the feeding pressure. As the MWCNT-COOH content increased, the $CO_2$ permeability increased and then decreased above 2 wt% MWCNT-COOH content. The 2 wt% MWCNT-COOH composite membrane exhibited a $CO_2/N_2$ selectivity of 77.8 and a $CO_2$ permeability of 84 barrer at 8 bar. The high $CO_2/N_2$ selectivity and $CO_2$ permeability were due to the high affinity between the quadrupolar $CO_2$, polar ether groups of PEO, and the polar ester groups of EVA. Additionally, the strong affinity between $CO_2$ and the -COOH groups on the MWCNT surface contributed to the high permeability of $CO_2$.

The effects of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) content, carbon black (CB) content, atmospheric-pressure flame plasma (APFP) treatment, and acid treatment on the mechanical properties of elastomeric composites were investigated. For pure or filled rubbers with the given amount of CB (20 and 40 phr), the tensile strength and modulus of the elastomeric composites increase similarly with the MWCNT content. A composite with APFP-treated MWCNTs shows a hardening effect (high strength, high modulus, and high ductility) unlike the one with untreated MWCNTs. On the other hand, a composite with APFP-treated CB shows a softening effect (high strength, low modulus, and high ductility), which is unlike a composite with untreated CB. As the refluxing time increases from 1 h to 2 h and the sulfuric acid concentration increases from 60% to 90%, the tensile strength and modulus of a composite decrease. Thus, it is found that the MWCNT content, CB content, APFP treatment, sulfuric acid concentration, and refluxing time have an important effect on the mechanical properties of NBR composites.

It is known that physical and chemical changes of cement hydrates cause problems in the volume stability of concrete. In order to overcome these problems, there is a growing interest in research on mixing technology of cement-based materials and nanomaterials. Among the nanomaterials, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are attracting attention due to their excellent mechanical properties. The CNTs are made of cylindrically shaped graphene sheets. According to the number of sheets, single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are classified. Although the SWCNT has superior mechanical properties, the research using MWCNT is vigorous due to the difficulty of marketability and manufacturing, but the research using SWCNT is insufficient. In this study, we investigate the effect of SWCNT on the formation of hydrate of cement paste by observing the microstructure of broken cement paste after measuring the flexural strength of cement paste with SWCNT dispersion.

Electrochemical capacitors have been the most strong energy storage devices due to high power density and long cycle stability. Pristine carbon nanotubes are promising electrode materials for excellent electrical conductivity and high specific surface area in electrochemical capacitor. However, the practical application of pristine carbon nanotubes was limited by the aggregation into bundles due to van der Waals force. In this research, we explained how multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) functionalized by carboxyl, sulfonic, and amine groups (CNT-COOH, CNT-SO3H, CNT-NH2) to improve the performances of MWCNT. Functionalized CNTs showed two- to four-fold increase in capacitance over that of pristine CNTs, while maintaining reasonable cyclic stability. But, the CNT-COOH showed the lowest rate capability of 57% compared to 84%, 86% of CNT-SO3H and CNT-NH2. As demonstrated by the spectroscopic analysis, This reseach showed how surface functional group of carbon nanotubes change capacitor performances.

From the gradual increasing state of charge (GISOC) observations, electrochemical behavior of multi-walled carbon nanotube│(lM LiP $F_{6}$ , EC,DEC,DME 3:5:5 volume ratio)│lithium cells was evaluated using the galvanostatic charge-discharge process. A MWCNT delivers a specific charge capacity of 1,300 mAh/g in a Li cell when cycled up to an end voltage of 0 V (vs. Li/L $i^{+}$ )at a constant current rate every 10 hours. However, in the present study, the specific discharge capacity obtained is 338 mAh/g, thus amounting to a coulombic efficiency of only 26%. Further, when the MWCNT│Li cells were tested using the GISOC method, two distinguishable linear-fit ranges were observed due to the intercalation/deintercalation of lithium, which were found to have II $E_1$, IIC $s_1$ and II $E_2$of 27.3%, 372 mAh/g, and 25.5%, respectively. Q $c_1$, could be calculated from the data of IIE and IICs of each range by the modified equation "II $C_{sum}$= $\Sigma$( $Q_{C}$- $Q_{D}$)=(II $E_{1}$$^{-1}$ ) $Q_{Dl}$ +(II $E_2$$^{-1}$ -1) ( $Q_{D2}$- $Q_{Dl}$ ) + IIC $s_1$= $Q_{Cl}$ - $Q_{Dl}$ ". Results of the GISOC method could be converted to the results of galvanostatic charge-discharge process, irrespective of the state of charge of the cell or battery.ery.y.y.
