Multi-hop networks are a low-setup-cost solution for enlarging an area of network coverage through multi-hop routing. Carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) is frequently used in multi-hop networks. Multi-hop networks face multiple problems, such as a rise in contention for the medium, and packet loss under heavy-load, saturated conditions, which consumes more bandwidth due to re-transmissions. The number of re-transmissions carried out in a multi-hop network plays a major role in the achievable quality of service (QoS). This paper presents a statistical, analytical model for the end-to-end delay of contention-based medium access control (MAC) strategies. These strategies schedule a packet before performing the back-off contention for both differentiated heterogeneous data and homogeneous data under saturation conditions. The analytical model is an application of Markov chain theory and queuing theory. The M/M/1 model is used to derive access queue waiting times, and an absorbing Markov chain is used to determine the expected number of re-transmissions in a multi-hop scenario. This is then used to calculate the expected end-to-end delay. The prediction by the proposed model is compared to the simulation results, and shows close correlation for the different test cases with different arrival rates.
Virtualization has become one of the most helpful techniques in computing systems, and today it is prevalent in several computing environments including desktops, data-centers, and enterprises. However, since I/O layers are implemented to be oblivious to the I/O behaviors on virtual machines (VM), there still exists an I/O scalability issue in virtualized systems. In particular, when a multi-queue solid state drive (SSD) is used as a secondary storage, each system reveals a semantic gap that degrades the overall performance of the VM. This is due to two key problems, accelerated lock contentions and the I/O parallelism issue. In this paper, we propose a novel approach, including the design of virtual CPU (vCPU)-dedicated queues and I/O threads, which efficiently distributes the lock contentions and addresses the parallelism issue of Virtio-blk-data-plane in virtualized environments. Our approach is based on the above principle, which allocates a dedicated queue and an I/O thread for each vCPU to reduce the semantic gap. Our experimental results with various I/O traces clearly show that our design improves the I/O operations per second (IOPS) in virtualized environments by up to 155% over existing QEMU-based systems.

The performance of an AGV varies with the applied AGV dispatching rule in the operation of AGVS. This study proposes a multi-attribute AGV dispatching rule. The suggested dispatching rule considers the output queue of a workstation, distance between an idle AGV and a workstation to be served, the input queue of the destination and the remaining job process of a part. This study suggests two types of and the remaining job process of a part. This study suggests two types of multi-attribute dispatching rules. One is an one-stage rule which selects the part to be served considering four attributes simultaneously. The other is a two-stage rule by which a workstation is selected and a part is chosen from the selected workstation. The simulation runs were executed under different experimental conditions to obtain preliminary statistics on the several performance measures.

Call admission control (CAC) plays an important role in mobile cellular network to guarantee the quality of service (QoS). In this paper, a dynamic hybrid CAC scheme with integrated cutoff priority and handoff queue for mobile cellular network is proposed and some performance metrics are derived. The unique characteristic of the proposed CAC scheme is that it can support any number of service types and that the cutoff thresholds for handoff calls are dynamically adjusted according to the number of service types and service priority index. Moreover, timeouts of handoff calls in queues are also considered in our scheme. By modeling the proposed CAC scheme with a one-dimensional Markov chain (1DMC), some performance metrics are derived, which include new call blocking probability ($P_{nb}$), forced termination probability (PF), average queue length, average waiting time in queue, offered traffic utilization, wireless channel utilization and system performance which is defined as the ratio of channel utilization to Grade of Service (GoS) cost function. In order to validate the correctness of the derived analytical performance metrics, simulation is performed. It is shown that simulation results match closely with the derived analytic results in terms of $P_{nb}$ and PF. And then, to show the advantage of 1DMC modeling for the performance analysis of our proposed CAC scheme, the computing complexity of multi-dimensional Markov chain (MDMC) modeling in performance analysis is analyzed in detail. It is indicated that state-space cardinality, which reflects the computing complexity of MDMC, increases exponentially with the number of service types and total channels in a cell. However, the state-space cardinality of our 1DMC model for performance analysis is unrelated to the number of service types and is determined by total number of channels and queue capacity of the highest priority service in a cell. At last, the performance comparison between our CAC scheme and Mahmoud ASH's scheme is carried out. The results show that our CAC scheme performs well to some extend.

The probe vehicle penetration rate is a required parameter in the estimation of entire volume, density, and queue length from probe vehicle data. The previous studies have proposed estimation methods without point detectors, which are based on probability structures for the locations of probe and non-probe vehicles; however, such methods are poorly suited to the case of multi-lane streets. Therefore, this study aimed to estimate the probe vehicle penetration rate at a multi-lane intersection and introduce a probability distribution of the queue length of each lane. Although a gap between estimates and observations was found, the estimates followed the trend of observations; the estimation could be improved by the correction factor hereafter. This study is expected to be used as a basic study for the estimation of entire volume, density, and queue length at multi-lane intersections without point detectors.
Grid computing is a service that share geographically distributed computing resources through high speed network. In this paper, we propose hybrid scheduling scheme which considers not only meta-scheduling scheme to distribute the job between the nodes of grid computing system but also the job scheduling to distribute the job within the local nodes. According to the number of processors needed and expected execution time, the job with high priority is allocated to job queue while the one with low priority and remote job are allocated to backfill queue. We evaluate the proposing scheme through the various experiments and the results show that the utilization of grid computing system increases and the job slowdown decreases.

We consider a Markovian retrial queue with waiting space in which the service rates and retrial rates depend on the number of customers in the service facility and in the orbit, respectively. Each arriving customer from outside or orbit decide either to enter the facility or to join the orbit in Bernoulli manner whose entering probability depend on the number of customers in the service facility. In this paper, a stochastic order relation between two bivariate processes (C(t), N(t)) representing the number of customers C(t) in the service facility and N(t) one in the orbit is deduced in terms of corresponding parameters by constructing the equivalent processes on a common probability space. Some applications of the results to the stochastic bounds of the multi-server retrial model are presented.

In this paper, we present a new scheduling scheme for MIMO OFDM Multiuser Diversity System. This scheduling scheme maximizes the system throughput, and at the same time fairly shares the resources based on the feedback information from the receivers and the queue information. To show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, we evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm as compared to K&H and RR algorithms.
This paper proposes a design for efficient and accurate retrieval of similar image subsequences using the multi-dimensional time warping distance as similarity evaluation tool in image sequence database after building of two indexing structures implemented with priority queue and suffix tree respectively. Receiving query image sequence, at first step, the proposed method searches the candidate set of similar image subsequences in priory queue index structure. If it can not get satisfied results, it retrieves another candidate set in suffix tree index structure at second step. The using of the low-bound distance function can remove the dissimilar subsequence without false dismissals during similarity evaluating process between query image sequence and stored sequences in two index structures.
