  • In this paper, we propose a feature extraction method which extracts directional features of handwritten numerals by using the projection runlength. Our directional featrures are obtained from four directional images, each of which contains horizontal, vertical, right-diagonal and left-diagonal lines in entire numeral shape respectively. A conventional method which extracts directional features by using Kirsch masks generates edge-shaped double line directional images for four directions, whereas our method uses the projections and their runlengths for four directions to produces single line directional images for four directions. To obtain the directional projections for four directions from a numeral image, some preprocessing steps such as thinning and dilation are required, but the shapes of resultant directional lines are more similar to the numeral lines of input numerals. Four [$4{\times}4$] directional features of a numeral are obtained from four directional line images through a zoning method. By using a hybrid feature which is made by combining our feature with the conventional features of a mesh features, a kirsch directional feature and a concavity feature, higher recognition rates of the handwrittern numerals can be obtained. For recognition test with given features, we use a multi-layer perceptron neural network classifier which is trained with the back propagation algorithm. Through the experiments with the handwritten numeral database of Concordia University, we have achieved a recognition rate of 97.85%.

  • DTV field tests have been performed to measure field strength and to check reception ratio on indoor and outdoor sites. They use an antenna of 9m to measure DTV signal in case of outdoor measurement on the road. Modern skyscrapers require the analysis of vertical-directional wave propagation by measuring vertical-directional DTV signal. Even if the field strength is above the reception threshold of $43dB{\mu}V/m$, the reception is impossible in case of strong multi-path or high impulse noise. So, vertical-directional field measurement is essential in environment of tall buildings. In this paper, we developed an octo type multi-copter to measure vertical-directional DTV signal level. A compact and portable DTV signal level meter, an antenna, a microwave transmitter for data transmission, and a recording equipment are equipped in the multi-copter. Three different sites are selected to test the measurement system. Developed measurement system using the multi-copter is very useful in measuring vertical-directional DTV signal, especially in apartments, non-accessible area by vehicles, and forbidden areas.

  • Hybrid simulation (HS) is a versatile tool for structural performance evaluation under dynamic loads. Although real structural responses are often multiple-directional owing to an eccentric mass/stiffness of the structure and/or excitations not along structural major axes, few HS in this field takes into account structural responses in multiple directions. Multi-directional loading is more challenging than uni-directional loading as there is a nonlinear transformation between actuator and specimen coordinate systems, increasing the difficulty of suppressing loading error. Moreover, redundant actuators may exist in multi-directional hybrid simulations of large-scale structures, which requires the loading strategy to contain ineffective loading of multiple actuators. To address these issues, lately a new strategy was conceived for accurate reproduction of desired displacements in bi-directional hybrid simulations (BHS), which is characterized in two features, i.e., iterative displacement command updating based on the Jacobian matrix considering nonlinear geometric relationships, and force-based control for compensating ineffective forces of redundant actuators. This paper performs performance validation and application of this new mixed loading strategy. In particular, virtual BHS considering linear and nonlinear specimen models, and the diversity of actuator properties were carried out. A validation test was implemented with a steel frame specimen. A real application of this strategy to BHS on a full-scale 2-story frame specimen was performed. Studies showed that this strategy exhibited excellent tracking performance for the measured displacements of the control point and remarkable compensation for ineffective forces of the redundant actuator. This strategy was demonstrated to be capable of accurately and effectively reproducing the desired displacements in large-scale BHS.

  • In this paper we proposed multi-directional matching windows combined by multi-dimensional feature vector matching, which uses not only intensity values but also multiple feature values, such as variance, first and second derivative of pixels. Multi-dimensional feature vector matching has the advantage of compensating the drawbacks of area-based stereo matching using one feature value, such as intensity. We define matching cost of a pixel by the minimum value among eight multi-dimensional feature vector distances of the pixels expanded in eight directions having the interval of 45 degrees. As best stereo matches, we determine the two points with the minimum matching cost within the disparity range. In the experiment we used aerial imagery and IKONOS satellite imagery and obtained more accurate matching results than that of conventional matching method.

  • By employing multi-directional random waves, a parameter controlling the force acting on a long caisson breakwater is investigated in detail. Both JONSWAP (Joint North Sea Wave Project) and asymmetric directional spectra are adopted for frequency and directional spectra. It is found that the parameter decreases as the length of caisson and the angle of main direction of incident waves increase. Furthermore, the parameter is much similar to that of regular waves as the maximum spreading parameter $s_{max}$ increases. The parameter, however, decreases as asymmetry parameter ${\mu}$ increases when the main direction of incident waves is oblique to the breakwater.

  • This research experimented on the change of the multiple colleague scan angle facing one scan object facet to many directions of the form of 3D about the visual angle nervous system forming the cubic distribution with the gradient magnetic field of the mri system and considered the existing basic angle oblique direction test coverage and comparison. MR system can freely select various pulse sequence and image slice. To oblique imaging for optic nerve viewing, we have studied the variation of scan angle between typical oblique scan method (sagittal-coronal plane) and multi directional angles oblique scan method (sagittal-coronal-axial plane) using gradient of MR system. In this study, the subjects of the experiment were normal adults in our country. As a result, we confirmed that multi directional angles oblique scan method can display anatomical information of more wider area than typical oblique scan method. In addition, to clearly display optic nerve, we also confirmed that image slice thickness and pulse sequence have effect on it.

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the applicability of GIS based multi-directional flow allocation model. In order to evaluate the suggested model in this study, it was applied to real watersheds, Pyeongchang and Soyang river basin. The simulation results were compared with observed values, and showed good agreements. The improvement of accuracy and reduction of simulation time were carried out by applying multi-directional flow allocation. Accordingly, the applied methodologies presented in this study will be used to predict accurate runoff, which plays a major role in integrated flood management. If this model is combined with the techniques of rainfall forecasting, it will contribute to the real-time flood forecasting and warning in the future.

  • The feature extraction of asterias amurensis by using patterns is difficult to extract all the concave and convex features of asterias amurensis nor classify concave and convex. Concave and convex as important structural features of asterias amurensis are the features which should be found and the classification of concave and convex is also necessary for the recognition of asterias amurensis later. Accordingly, this study suggests the technique to extract the features of concave and convex, the main features of asterias amurensis. This technique classifies the concave and convex features by using the multi-directional linear scanning and form the candidate groups of the concave and convex feature points and decide the feature points of the candidate groups and apply convex hull algorithm to the extracted feature points. The suggested technique efficiently extracts the concave and convex features, the main features of asterias amurensis by dividing them. Accordingly, it is expected to contribute to the studies on the recognition of asterias amurensis in the future.

  • In this study, a distributed rainfall-runoff model is developed using a multi-directional flow allocation algorithm and the real-time runoff updating algorithm. The developed model consists of relatively simple governing equations of hydrologic processes in order to apply developed algorithms and to enhance the efficiency of computational time which is drawback of distributed model application. The variability of topographic characteristics and flow direction according to various spatial resolution were analyzed using DEM(Digital Elevation Model) data. As a preliminary process using fine resolution DEM data, a multi-directional flow allocation algorithm was developed to maintain detail flow information in distributed rainfall-runoff simulation which has strong advantage in computation efficiency and accuracy. Also, a real-time updating algorithm was developed to update current watershed condition. The developed model is able to hold the information of actual behavior of runoff process in low resolution simulation. Therefore it is expected the improvement of forecasting accuracy and computational efficiency.

  • To achieve high-speed (giga-bit) connectivity for short-range wireless multimedia applications, the millimeter-wave (mmWave) wireless personal area networks with directional antennas are gaining increased interest. Due to the use of directional antennas and mmWave communications, the probability of non-interfering transmissions increases in a localized region. Network throughput can be increased immensely by the concurrent time allocation of non-interfering transmissions. The problem of finding optimum time allocation for concurrent transmissions is an NP-hard problem. In this paper, we propose two enhanced versions of previously proposed multi-hop concurrent transmission (MHCT) schemes. To increase network capacity, the proposed schemes efficiently make use of the free holes in the time-allocation map of the MHCT scheme; thus, making it more compact.
