  • Spatial audio coding (SAC) is an extremely high compact representation of encoded multi-channel audio material. This paper suggests a multi-channel audio service in the terrestrial digital multimedia broadcasting (T-DMB) system using a novel SAC tool, which is called a virtual source location information (VSLI)-based SAC tool. Intensive experiments are presented to evaluate the validity of the proposed VSLI-based SAC tool, and prototypical systems are also presented to demonstrate the reliability of the proposed multi-channel T-DMB system in real applications.

  • According to the advancement of multimedia compression technologies, high quality multi-media services are easily found in common life. Along with this situation, 5.1-channel audio service also has expanded the application area to home theater system and car theater system and consumer can easily take a chance to experience the feeling of 5.1-channel audio. On the other hand, terrestrial DMB service has been launched in Korea from Dec. 2005 as a handhold multi-media broadcasting service. However, multi-channel audio was not considered due to the insufficiency of bandwidth and the handhold usage. Lately, MPEG is standardizing high efficiency multi-channel audio compression technology for handheld broadcasting service, and several trial for application is introduced in Europe. In this paper, we would like to explain multi-channel audio compression technology, describe the implementation of the verification system for the multi-channel audio service over T-DMB and investigate the possibility of further realization of the service.

  • In this paper, we propose a new transmission technique of audio signals for the serial connection of the speakers of multiple-channel audio systems. Analog audio signals from a multi-channel audio system are converted into digital signals with signal processing steps and transferred to each speaker through a serial line. The signal processing steps contain data compression and packet generation in association with audio signal characteristics. Each speaker gets its corresponding digital audio signals from the transmitted packets and converts the signals into analog audio signals to make sounds with the speaker All the proposed functions in this paper are modeled in VHDL. implemented with FPGA chips, and tested for actual multi-channel audio systems.

  • Use of the 5.1 channel audio signals suitable for the television system is improper for the radio broadcasting system, which uses the stereo audio system. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an audio down-mixer to convert 5.1 multi-channel audio signals to stereo signals for radio broadcasting. In this paper, a development of an audio down-mixer was carried out to convert 5.1 multi-channel audio signals to stereo signals. The down-mixer which was developed can use the audio signals separated from video signals, including sound signals or individual signals provided from 3-channel AES/EBU signals including Left(L), Right(R), Left Surround(Ls), Right Surround(Rs), Center(C) and Low Frequency Effect(Lfe) sounds as mixer inputs.

  • The Terrestrial Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (T-DMB) system supplies high quality audio comparable with VCD in 7 inch display and high quality audio comparable CD at the mobile reception environment T-DMB will launch commercial service at the middle of 2005. However the bandwidth for audio data and the number of channels are restricted to 128 kbps and 2 respectively in the current T-DMB standard because of the limitation of available bandwidth for multimedia data. This Paper Proposes a novel media processor structure for providing multi-channel audio contents oyer T-DMB system allowing backward compatibility with the legacy T-DMB receiver. Furthermore. we also Propose an adaptive receiver structure to supply optimal audio contents on various speaker configuration in T-DMB receiver. To provide multi-channel audio contents allowing backward comaptilbity with the legacy T-DMB receiver, the additional data for multi-channel audio are defined as a dependent stream of main audio stream. The OD strucure for control an additional multi-channel audio elementary stream is proposed without changing the BIFS of the legacy T-DMB system.

  • A multi-channel audio CODEC with inter-channel interference suppression is proposed, in which channel switching noise-referred sampling error is significantly reduced. It also supports a coarse/fine mode operation for fast frequency tracking with good harmonic performance. The proposed multi-channel audio CODEC was designed in a 65 nm CMOS process. Measured results indicated that SNR and SNDR of ADC were 93 dB and 84dB, respectively, with SNDR improved by 43 dB. Those of DAC were 96 dB and 87 dB, respectively, with SNDR improved by 45 dB when all the channels are running independently.

  • An overview of the recently finalized multi-channel audio coding standard MPEG Surround is provided. This audio coding standard downmixes multi-channel signals to mono or stereo signals and, simultaneously, extracts spatial parameters for its encoding process. In its decoding process, it reconstructs multi-channel signals based on the downmix signals and spatial parameters. Since the downmix signals are coded in conventional audio coding format such as AAC and MP3 and the spatial parameters require a small amount of information MPEG Surround guarantees high sound quality multi-channel audio at low bit rates. Besides, it is backward-compatible to conventional audio coding techniques because the downmix signals can be played on portable audio devices ignoring the spatial parameter information. In this paper, Part 1 presents an overview of the basic structure of MPEG Surround and Part 2 describes various modes and tools including the binaural mode which supports the virtual 5.1-channel playback via headphones or earphones. The listening test results by various companies and organizations are also presented.

  • In this paper, we propose a person tracking based multi-channel audio panning system for multi-view broadcasting services. Multi-view broadcasting is to render the video sequences that are captured from a set of cameras based on different viewpoints, and multi-channel audio panning techniques are necessary for audio rendering in these services. In order to apply such a realistic audio technique to this multi-view broadcasting service, person tracking techniques which are to estimate the position of users are also necessary. For these reasons, proposed methods are composed of two parts. The first part is a person tracking method by using ultrasonic satellites and receiver. We could obtain user's coordinates of high resolution and short duration about 10 mm and 150 ms. The second part is MPEG Surround parameter-based multi-channel audio panning method. It is a method to obtain panned multi-channel audio by controlling the MPEG Surround spatial parameters. A MUSHRA test is conducted to objectively evaluate the perceptual quality and measure localization performance using a dummy head. From the experiments, it is shown that the proposed method provides better perceptual quality and localization performance than the conventional parameter-based audio panning method. In addition, we implement the prototype of person tracking based multi-view broadcasting system by integrating proposed methods with multi-view display system.

  • This paper describes the implementation of a multi-channel audio codec for HETV. This codec has the features of the 3/2-stereo plus low frequency enhancement, downward compatibility with the smaller number of channels, backward compatibility with the existing 2/0-stereo system(MPEG-1 audio), and multilingual capability. The encoder of this codec consists of 6-channel analog audio input part with the sampling rate of 48 kHz, 4-channel digital audio input part and three TMS320C40 /DSPs. The encoder implements multi-channel audio compression using a human perceptual psychoacoustic model, and has the bit rate reduction to 384 kbit/s without impairment of subjective quality. The decoder consists of 6-channel analog audio output part, 4-channel digital audio output part, and two TMS320C40 DSPs for a decoding procedure. The decoder analyzes the bit stream received with bit rate of 384 kbit/s from the encoder and reproduces the multi-channel audio signals for analog and digital outputs. The multi-processing of this audio codec using multiple DSPs is ensured by high speed transfer of date between DSPs through coordinating communication port activities with DMA coprocessors. Finally, some technical considerations are suggested to realize the problem of real-time operation, which are found out through the implementation of this codec using the MPEG-2 layer II sudio coding algorithm and the use of the hardware architecture with commercial multiple DSPs.
