  • A field scale productivity analysis is required for the development of gas hydrate in marine sedimentary layers to verify the field applicability of production techniques and to improve productivity. In this study, the productivity resulting from the application of depressurization using multi-wells for the development of gas hydrate in the Ulleung Basin, East Sea of Korea, was determined. A numerical analysis model reflecting the conditions of candidate sites for the Ulleung Basin was constructed, and the productivity and dissociation behavior were comparatively analyzed. The pressure propagation and gas hydrate dissociation region by the multi-wells were wider and the productivity was higher than that of a single well. Different depressurization effects according to the spacing of multi-wells affected productivity. The results provide basic data for productivity analysis when establishing a field test production plan for the Ulleung Basin.

  • Recently, system virtualization has been applied to consumer electronics (CE) such as smart mobile phones. Although multi-core processors have become a viable solution for complex applications of consumer electronics, the issue of utilizing multi-core resources in the virtualization layer has not been researched sufficiently. In this paper, we present a new hypervisor design and implementation for multi-core CE devices. We concretely describe virtualization methods for a multi-core processor and multi-core-related subsystems. We also analyze bottlenecks of network performance in a virtualization environment that supports multimedia applications and propose an efficient virtual interrupt distributor. Our new multi-core hypervisor improves network performance by 5.5 times as compared to a hypervisor without the virtual interrupt distributor.

  • Sensors have limited resources in sensor networks, so efficient use of energy is important. Representative clustering methods, LEACH, LEACHC, TEEN generally use direct transmission methods from cluster headers to the sink node to pass collected data. However, the communication distance of the sensor nodes at low cost and at low power is not long, it requires a data transfer through the multi-hop to transmit data to the sink node. In the existing cluster-based sensor network studies, cluster process and route selection process are performed separately in order to configure the routing path to the sink node. In this paper, in order to use the energy of the sensor nodes that have limited resources efficiently, a cluster-based multi-hop routing protocol which merges the clustering process and routing process is proposed. And the proposed method complements the problem of uneven cluster creation that may occur in probabilistic cluster methods and increases the energy efficiency of whole sensor nodes.

  • Performance enhancement is one of the most important issues in high performance distributed computing systems. In such computing systems, online users submit their jobs anytime and anywhere to a set of dynamic resources. Jobs arrival and processes execution times are stochastic. The performance of a distributed computing system can be improved by using an effective load balancing strategy to redistribute the user tasks among computing resources for efficient utilization. This paper presents a multi-class load balancing strategy that balances different classes of user tasks on multiple heterogeneous computing nodes to minimize the per-class mean response time. For a wide range of system parameters, the performance of the proposed multi-class load balancing strategy is compared with that of the random distribution load balancing, and uniform distribution load balancing strategies using simulation. The results show that, the proposed strategy outperforms the other two studied strategies in terms of average task response time, and average computing nodes utilization.

  • This study proposes a performance model of a shared bus multi-processor system and analyzes the effect of input/output types on system performance and overload of shared resources. This system performance model reflects the memory reference time in relation to the effect of input/output types on shared resources and the input/output processing time in relation to the input/output processor, disk buffer, and device standby places. In addition, it demonstrates the contribution of input/output types to system performance for comprehensive analysis of system performance. As the concept of workload in the probability theory and the presented model are utilized, the result of operating and analyzing the model in various conditions of processor capability, cache miss ratio, page fault ratio, disk buffer hit ratio (input/output processor and controller), memory access time, and input/output block size. A simulation is conducted to verify the analysis result.

  • This paper presents a geostatistical methodology to model local uncertainty in spatial estimation of sediment grain size with high-resolution remote sensing imagery. Within a multi-Gaussian framework, the IKONOS imagery is used as local means both to estimate the grain size values and to model local uncertainty at unsample locations. A conditional cumulative distribution function (ccdf) at any locations is defined by mean and variance values which can be estimated by multi-Gaussian kriging with local means. Two ccdf statistics including condition variance and interquartile range are used here as measures of local uncertainty and are compared through a cross validation analysis. In addition to local uncertainty measures, the probabilities of not exceeding or exceeding any grain size value at any locations are retrieved and mapped from the local ccdf models. A case study of Baramarae beach, Korea is carried out to illustrate the potential of geostatistical uncertainty modeling.

  • Major characteristics of new Waesungri maize inbred line has multi-tiller and ears: five to six tillers and seven to eight ears per plant and flowering date of Waesungri was delayed about 18 and 24 days compared to Mo17 U.S line and IK$_4$ Korean local lines, respectively. Number of ears, fresh and dry weight per plant were significantly different among all tested hybrids including Waesungri/Sinkihong hybrid under different planting times and densities. Especially, both fresh and dry weight of IK$_1$/FR140//Waesungri F$_1$hybrid were significantly higher at high planting density. In kernel weight per unit area, Wnesungri/Sinkihong hybrid was high at high density and IK$_1$/FR140//Waesungri hybrid was high at low planting density. As results of analysis of variance, flowering date was shown a significantly different both planting times and varieties, while other characters including stem height were shown very variable in interactions with enviromental factors.

  • Chip manufacture nowadays turned their attention from accelerating uniprocessors to integrating multiple cores on a chip. Moreover desktop graphic hardware is now starting to support general purpose computation. Desktop users are able to use multi-core CPU and GPU as a high performance computing resources these days. However exploiting parallel computing resources are still challenging because of lack of higher programming abstraction for parallel programming. The 2-dimensional discrete cosine transform (2D-DCT) algorithms are most computational intensive part of JPEG encoding. There are many fast 2D-DCT algorithms already studied. We implemented several algorithms and estimated its runtime on multi-core CPU and GPU environments. Experiments show that data parallelism can be fully exploited on CPU and GPU architecture. We expect parallelized DCT bring performance benefit towards its applications such as JPEG and MPEG.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze antioxidant activity and multidrug resistance reversing activity in several Korean colored soybean (Glycine max Merr.) cultivars. Antioxidant activity of methanol extracts from colored soybean cultivars was evaluated by TBARS (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances), DPPH (1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) and ABTS (2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) methods. By means of TBARS, cultivar "Jeonnam #1" showed the highest activity until 7 days, and followed by "Black #1", "Jinyul" and "Black #3", showing lower activity than that of BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene). Methanol extracts of all cultivars proved that DPPH radical scavenging activity is dose-dependent. Methanol extract from cultivar "Jeonnam #1" showed highest DPPH radical scavenging activity, and followed by cultivars "Black #1". MDR (multi-drug resistance reversing) activity, however, showed the highest effect in "Black #3" and the lowest "Black #1" cultivar. These results suggest that seed colors of soybean may play an important role in antioxidant activity and MDR activity.
