  • MSC (Multi-Spectral Camera) system is an electro-optical camera system which is being developed to be installed on KOMPSAT-2 satellite. High resolution image data from MSC system will be transmitted to the ground-station through x-band antenna called APS (Antenna Pointing System). APS is a directional antenna which will point to the receiving antenna at ground station while the satellite is passing over it. The APS needs to be controlled accurately to provide the reliable communication with big RF link margin. The APS is controlled by ATS (Antenna Tracking Software) which is included in the MSC software. ATS uses the closed loop control algorithm which will use TPF (Tracking Parameter File) as an input for antenna position, and will use two resolve readings from APS as a feedback. ATS has been developed and verified using APS QM (Qualification Model) and all the control parameters for ATS have been tested and verified. Various kinds of maximum, nominal and realistic dynamics for the APS movement have been simulated and verified. In this paper, closed loop servo control algorithm and obtained APS position error from the verification test with APS QM will be presented in detail

  • Heavy rainfall events are occurred exceedingly various forms by a complex interaction between synoptic, dynamic and atmospheric stability. As the results, quantitative precipitation forecast is extraordinary difficult because it happens locally in a short time and has a strong spatial and temporal variations. GOES-9 imagery data provides continuous observations of the clouds in time and space at the right resolution. In this study, an power-law type algorithm(KAE: Korea auto estimator) for estimating rainfall based on the rainfall type was developed using geostationary meteorological satellite data. GOES-9 imagery and automatic weather station(AWS) measurements data were used for the classification of rainfall types and the development of estimation algorithm. Subjective and objective classification of rainfall types using GOES-9 imagery data and AWS measurements data showed that most of heavy rainfalls are occurred by the convective and mired type. Statistical analysis between AWS rainfall and GOES-IR data according to the rainfall types showed that estimation of rainfall amount using satellite data could be possible only for the convective and mixed type rainfall. The quality of KAE in estimating the rainfall amount and rainfall area is similar or slightly superior to the National Environmental Satellite Data and Information Service's auto-estimator(NESDIS AE), especially for the multi cell convective and mixed type heavy rainfalls. Also the high estimated level is denoted on the mature stage as well as decaying stages of rainfall system.

  • Vibration-based fault detection and condition monitoring of rotating machinery, using statistical process control (SPC) combined with statistical pattern recognition methodology, has been widely investigated by many researchers. In particular, the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) is considered as a powerful tool for feature extraction in detecting fault on rotating machinery. Although DWT significantly reduces the dimensionality of the data, the number of retained wavelet features can still be significantly large. Then, the use of standard multivariate SPC techniques is not advised, because the sample covariance matrix is likely to be singular, so that the common multivariate statistics cannot be calculated. Even though many feature-based SPC methods have been introduced to tackle this deficiency, most methods require a parametric distributional assumption that restricts their feasibility to specific problems of process control, and thus limit their application. This study proposes a nonparametric multivariate control chart method, based on multiscale wavelet scalogram (MWS) features, that overcomes the limitation posed by the parametric assumption in existing SPC methods. The presented approach takes advantage of multi-resolution analysis using DWT, and obtains MWS features with significantly low dimensionality. We calculate Hotelling's $T^2$-type monitoring statistic using MWS, which has enough damage-discrimination ability. A bootstrap approach is used to determine the upper control limit of the monitoring statistic, without any distributional assumption. Numerical simulations demonstrate the performance of the proposed control charting method, under various damage-level scenarios for a bearing system.

  • Quantifying the solute composition of a cloud droplet (or a whole droplet) is an important task for understanding formation processes and heating/cooling rates. In this study, a combination of droplet fixation and SR-XRF microprobe analysis was used to visualize and quantify elements in a micro-scale droplet. In this study, we report the preliminary outcome of this experiment. A spherical micro-scale droplet was successfully solidified through exposure to ${\alpha}$-cyano-acrylate vapor without affecting its size or shape. An X-ray microprobe system equipped at the beam line 37XU of Super Photon ring 8 GeV (SPring-8) was applied to visualize and quantify the elemental composition in an individual micro-scale droplet. It was possible to reconstruct 2D elemental maps for the K and Cl contained in a microdroplet that was dispensed from the 10-ppm KCl standard solution. Multi-elemental peaks corresponding to X-ray energy were also successfully resolved. Further experiments to determine quantitative measures of elemental mass in individual droplets and high-resolution X-ray microtomography (i.e., 3D elemental distribution) are planned for the future.

  • Recent advances in energetic materials modeling and high-resolution hydrocode simulation enable enhanced computational analysis of bio-medical treatments that utilize high-pressure shock waves. Of particular interest is in designing devices that use such technology in medical treatments. For example, the generated micro shock waves with peak pressure on orders of 10 GPa can be used for treatments such as kidney stone removal, trans-dermal micro-particle delivery. and cancer cell removal. In this work, we present a new computational methodology for applying the high explosive dynamics to bio-medical treatments by making use of high pressure shock physics and multi-material wave interactions. The preliminary calculations conducted by the in-house code, GIBBS2D, captures various features that are observed from the actual experiments under the similar test conditions. We expect to gain novel insights in applying explosive shock wave physics to the bio-medical science involving drug injection. Our forthcoming papers will illustrate the quantitative comparison of the modeled results against the experimental data.

  • A patient table considering x-ray transparency, mechanical safety and compact multi-axis moving mechanism has been developed. The goal of medical imaging technology is to keep radiation exposure of patients during x-raying to a minimum. In order to obtain clear pictures at low dose, however, the x-ray table which supports the patient must be sufficiently permeable to radiation to allow good image resolution. The table top is made of low density foam for x-ray transparent effective area and structural aluminum plate to connect moving mechanism under the table, covered with thin carbon fiber. This sandwich construction is very rigid and lightweight, so the table top can handle relatively heavy load comparing to its cantilevered structure which is unavoidable as long as cooperate with C-arm radiography. To verify the design results finite element static analysis and experimental tests have been done. According to the verification the results well satisfy certification guide lines as a medical device.

  • We discuss the experimental procedure for extracting reliable phase information from a defocus series of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) dark-field images using the transport of intensity equation (TIE). Taking InGaN/GaN multi-quantum well light-emitting diode as a model system, various factors affecting the final result of reconstructed phase such as TEM sample preparation, TEM imaging condition, image alignment, the correction of defocus values and the use of high frequency pass filter are evaluated. The obtained phase of wave function was converted to the geometric phase of the corresponding lattice planes, which was then used for the two-dimensional mapping of lattice strain following the dark-field inline holography (DIH) routine. The strain map obtained by DIH after optimized image processing is compared with that obtained by the geometric phase analysis of high resolution TEM (HRTEM) image, manifesting that DIH yields more accurate and reliable strain information than HRTEM-based GPA.

  • In a closed-die forging process, blocker has been used to fill and distribute metal well in finisher die. Generally, the blocker shape was determined by an expert with many experiences. However, the manual blocker design process takes much time and efforts, so various automatic methods for the blocker design process have been suggested for the last three decades. The method with filtering in FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) for the blocker design provides general solution than other methods. But. due to the properties of FFT in time-frequency domain, this method has some drawbacks such as long calculation time, difficulty of local control and additional boundary process after filtering. In this study. DWT (Discrete Wavelet Transform), which is more flexible and is more wildly used than FFT, is applied to the blocker design. The method with filtering in DWT is very proper to design blocker in both 2-D and 3-D shapes. To verify the efficiency of this method, blockers of some models are designed and the results show that blocker design with DWT is effective for the blocker designs.
