  • In order to find out the environmental factors influencing the catch of fyke nets in the coastal waters Yosu, the oceanographic factors, i.e., the waters temperature and the salinity were observed respectively from April to November in 1999, and each of them was compared with the catch of common mullet, Mugil cephalus by fyke net. The results obtained are summerized as follows : 1. The water temperature was ranged from 13.0 to $25^\circ$C and water temperature increased from April to August and decreased on September to November. 2. The range salinity in the fishing grounds was from 28.6 to 33.8$\textperthousand$, and salinity was high from April to June. From July, however, the salinity decreased to continue a low value still september. 3. The catches of common mullet caught by funnel net were the highest in may and the smallest in November. The ranges of optimum water temperature for the funnel nets fishing was 15.0 to $16.0^\circ$C, the ranges of optimum salinity for fishing varied between from 32.6 to 33.8$\textperthousand$.

  • Experiments were performed to find out the physico-chemical properties of milt and the sperm motilities in various conditions using the grey mullet, Mugil cephalus. The average concentration of sperm in the milt was $1,11 \pm0.36\times10^{10}/ml$. Spermatocrit was 96.7$\pm$2.6. pH and osmolality of seminal fluid were 7.8$\pm$0.1, 370$\pm$6 mOsm/kg, respectively, Total protein concentration of sperm was higher than that of seminal fluid, but total lipid concentration of seminal fluid was higher than that of sperm. The sperm motility was high in the diluent of milt : artificial seawater (1:10, by volume) and in 822 mOsm/kg and 983 mOsm/kg similar to seawater osmolality, but it decreased after 20 minutes. But activity of sperm was highly maintained in 482 mOsm/kg which was a little higher than osmolality of seminal fluid, and was high in pH 7$\~$9.

  • Mullet roe was salted and dried by the conventional processing method. Mullet roe was first salted with soybean sauce containing 10% NaCl and then pressed down to be a 1.2cm of thickness. It was dried at 2$0^{\circ}C$ under 3m/sec of aeration for 20 days. The lipids of the processed roe were fractionated by free and bound phospholipids. The contents of free and bound phospholipids were 9.30mg/100mg and 13.0mg/100mg respectively. The content of bound lipids were rapidly decreased than that of free fatty acids during processing and storaging. The major fatty acids of phospholipids were $C_{l6:0}$, $C_{20:0}$, $C_{16:1}$, $C_{l8:2}$ and $C_{20:5}$ whose contents were 6.64mg/100mg that occupied 72% of the total phospholipids. The ratio for the unsaturated fatty acids to the saturated ones of free phospholipids in fresh roe was 1.53 and it was decreased down to 0.34 in 9 weeks of storage. But the ratio of bound phospholipids was 1.04 of fresh roe and zero in 6 weeks. The content of essential fatty acids in bound phospholipids was 3.85mg/100mg occupying 75% of total essential fatty acids of the fresh roe, but they were totally destroyed during processing.g.g.g.

  • More than 90% of cultured fish is consumed by sliced raw fish which is usually an eating out menu in South Korea. In order to develop the aquaculture industry in Korea, It is very important to know whether consumers can differentiate each species or not and how consumers recognize each species by certain criteria. for example taste, seasonal preference. The purpose of this study is to understand the competitive relationship through positioning studies of each species by the selection attributes. A total of 221 consumers were surveyed in korea. This study adapted multidimensional scaling(MDS) analysis to explore how consumers position sliced raw fish species based on selection attributes. This study has produced perceptual maps of sliced raw fish market. Empirical data was collected from sliced raw fish consumers in Korea. The results of MDS analysis reveal that 7 species are divided into 3 groups(flat fish, black rock fish), (red sea bream, salmon, tuna), (sea bass, gray mullet). In this study flat fish and black rock fish are perceived as safe, familiar, good value species. Red seabream, salmon, tuna are perceived as luxurious species. Sea bass and gray mullet are perceived as unfamiliar species.

  • Stellantchasmus falcatus is a minute intestinal fluke in the family Heterophyidae. Metacercariae, the infective stage, were reported in a marine fish, mullet Liza subviridis, and a fresh water fish, Dermopgenus pusillus, in Thailand. Adults were found in chicks, rats, cats, and humans. Morphological studies were done for comparing Stellantchasmus sp. worms found in 2 different fish hosts; their shapes and organ arrangements were very similar except for the prepharynx length. Therefore, the present study aimed to compare their DNA fingerprints using the HAT-RAPD method for both types of Stellantchasmus and several other related species. Ten arbitrarily selected primers (OPA-04, OPA-09, OPN-02, OPN-03, OPN-09, OPN-12, OPP-11, OPR-15, OPX-13, and OPAD-01) were used. It was found that OPA-09, OPN-03, and OPAD-01 were able to generate S. falcatus specific fragments in mullets which consisted of 200, 760, and 280 bp, respectively. In addition, the results of morphologic, DNA fingerprinting, and phylogenetic analyses strongly suggest that the fresh water and marine specimens of Stellantchamus may be different species.

  • A specimen of longarm mullet Moolgarda cunnesius (Valenciennes, 1836) belonging to the family Mugilidae was collected from Yerae-dong, Seogwipo-si, Jeju-do Island, Korea, on July 19, 2023, using a hand net. The specimen was identified as Moolgarda cunnesius based on its morphological traits, including pectoral fin reaching the third or fourth spine of the first dorsal fin, anal fin higher than the first and second dorsal fin, two dorsal and caudal fin membranes with small melanophores, and a slightly convex interorbital region. Furthermore, molecular analysis, specifically comparison of the 623 base pairs of mitochondrial DNA COI sequences, confirmed that our specimen perfectly matched M. cunnesius. It is well known that the species is widely distributed in the Indo-West Pacific Ocean, including the Red Sea, Taiwan, and northern Australia, and this study shows that it also inhabits the Jeju-do Island, Korea. Additionally, we propose a new Korean name 'gin-pal-sung-eo' for this species.

  • A total of 32 human diphyllobothriasis cases have been reported so far in Korea, exclud- ing 21 egg-positive cases from stool examinations. Authors experienced five more human cases of DiphHllobothrium latum infection, especially infected due to eating raw flesh of redlip mullet, Lizc hoematocheiln. Five cases were neighbors residing in the Puchon area, Kyonggi-do, who ate raw mullets (L. hQematocheila) in a party in February 1996. The mul- lets were purchased at the Noryangjin fisheries market in Seoul. All of cases (2 males and 3 females) were 35 to 43 years old and healthy with the body weight range of 56-62 kg. They complained about gastrointestinal trouble and abdominal discomfort, but were in normal ranges of their hematology and urinalysis data. None revealed any sign of anemia The patients experienced natural discharge of a chain of segments before, and showed diphyllobothriid eggs in their stool specimens when they visited our laboratory. They were administered with praziquantel (15 mg/kg of body weight) and 30 g of magnesium sulfate as a purgative. Two whole worms with the scolices (310-340 cm in length; 8-13 mm in width) were expelled each from two out of five cases after anthelmintic treatment, and the others expelled the parts of strobilae without scolex. The worms were identified as D. Ictum, based on the following biological characters. external morphologies, coiling of uterus, the number of uterine loops, position of genital opening, morphologies of cirrus, cirrus sac and seminal vesicle on the histological sections, position of vagina and uterine pore , and microscopical and SEM morphologies of the eggs.

  • Amyloodinium sp. was found on the gills of mullet (Mugil cephalus) cultured on land. No external symptoms in the diseased fish were found except decoloration of the gills. In fresh preparations of the gills the parasites were opaque round or oval shape with a bright nucleus and 43.5 ㎛ (18.2~72.7, n=20) in size. In preparations added a drop of Lugol solution, they were black with the same shapes in fresh preparations and 43.5 ㎛ (n=20) in size. The parasites were stained black and blue in a droplet of Lugol solution and Diff-Quick III solution, respectively and their sizes were a little larger than in wet preparations. After stained with May-Grunwald Giemsa, the parasites appeared granular eosinophlic in the peripheral cytoplasm and granular strong basophilic in the center. In silver impregnated specimens the peripheral granules were negative and the central ones positive. The granules appeared brown in purplish cytoplasm after staining with Lugol solution. The parasites developed by binary division when they were cultivated in filtered seawater at 20℃. Histopathologically severe epithelial hyperplasia and fusion in the gill filaments resulted in clubbing, especially the proximal region of the filament. Epithelial hyperplasia was also found in the basal regions of the gill filaments and some epithelial cells were occasionally detached from the filaments. Some pear-shaped trophonts of the parasites with rhizoid attached on the gill filaments showing hyperplasia of the epithelial cells and mucous cells.
