Backgrounds: To overcome limited amount of autogenous mucosa for the reconstruction of various mucosal defect including oral mucosal defect, tissue engineered mucosa has been recently introduced. However, introduced conventional technique of tissue engineered mucosa still have serious pitfalls such as long fabrication time, fragility of the reconstructed mucosa, and complexity of the technique. Aim of the study: To examine whether the complex of preconfluent autologous keratinocytes and autologous PRP(Platelet rich plasma) can reconstruct oral mucosa on the muscular flap with easier and faster way compared to conventional mucosal tissue engineering technique. Materials and methods: One day before the operation, oral mucosa(3mm in diameter) were taken and treated for extraction of oral keratinocytes according to the routine manner. The day of operation, oral keratinocytes were prepared in the laboratory and then moved to the operating theater. Autologous PRP was also prepared and then mixed with oral keratinocytes just before grafting on the prepared muscular flap. After keratinocyte-PRP complex was seated, then a sterilized rubber sheet was placed on the graft and the elevated skin flap was replaced and sutured. Biopsies were proceeded at 3, 5, 7, 14 and 21 days. Tissue samples were evaluated clinically, histologically, and immunohistochemically. Results: All of the oral keratinocyte-PRP complexes were successfully grafted on the recipient sites(100%). On 3 days after the operation, 1-2 continuous epithelial layer and many inflammatory cells were observed. On 5 days after the operation, increase of layers of keratinocyte was observed with less inflammatory response. Thickness of the layers was gradually increased from 7 to 21 days after the operation. Cytokeratin confirms epithelium in every specimen. Conclusions: Preconfluent graft of autogenous oral keratinocytes mixed with autogenous PRP have successfully reconstructed myo-mucosal flap. This technique could be a useful alternative for oral mucosal reconstruction in the near future.

Objectives: During Le Fort I osteotomy, the separation of the pterygomaxillary junction (PMJ) is a difficult procedure for most surgeons because it is invisible. In this process, damage to the posterior structures constituting the sinus or those adjacent to it, including the maxillary sinus posterior wall and pterygoid plate, may occur. We would like to investigate the effects of this on the inside of the maxillary sinus after surgery and whether there are complications. Materials and Methods: One-hundred patients who underwent Le Fort I osteotomy from 2013 to 2020 using cone-beam computed tomography images were classified into two groups (clean-cut type and fractured type) according to the PMJ cutting pattern. In addition, the mucosal thickness in the maxillary sinus was divided into preoperative, postoperative three months, one year, and the change over the course of surgery was evaluated retrospectively. Results: Of the total 100 cases, the clean-cut type numbered 28 cases and the fractured type totaled 72 cases. Among the fracture types, part of the sinus wall and the pterygoid plate were broken in 69 cases, and the maxillary sinus posterior wall was detached in three cases. There was no statistically significant difference in sinus mucosal thickening between the clean-cut type and fractured type of the PMJ, three months and one year after surgery between the two groups. However, there was a significant difference in sinus mucosal thickness at postoperative one year in the case where a partial detachment of the maxillary sinus posterior wall occurred compared to not. Conclusion: Even if there is some damage to the structures behind the PMJ, it may not be reasonable to spend some time on the PMJ separation process considering the overall postoperative complications, if there is no significant difference inside the sinus, or increased probability of postoperative complications.

Objective: The purpose of this study is to determine the prevalence of sinus disease and abnormalities in patients scheduled for dental implant in maxillary posterior area using cone beam CT. Patients and Method: One hundred five maxillary sinuses in eighty-seven patients who underwent cone beam CT for dental implant in maxillary posterior area were included. Any patients who had previous history of sinus operations were not included. The sinus abnormalities were classified as follows ; normal (membrane thickness <2 mm), mucosal thickening (membrane thickness ${\geq}$ 2 mm and < 6 mm), partial opacification (membrane thickness > 6 mm but not full), full opacification and mucous retention cyst. The relationship between the remaining bone height, sinus symptoms and maxillary sinus abnormality was statistically surveyed. Results: Of 105 maxillary sinuses in 87 patients, 80 (76%) maxillary sinuses showed abnormalities ; 4 of 4 symptomatic patients and 76 of 101 asymptomatic patients. Mucosal thickening was the most common sinus abnormality. Only 3 (4%) of 80 maxillary sinus abnormalities were caused by the odontogenic origin. The prevalence of maxillary sinus abnormalities was higher in the symptomatic group than asymptomatic one (p<0.05). Conclusion: Maxillary sinus abnormalities were very common in the patients who were planning implantation in maxillary posterior areas. This result supports that thorough evaluation for maxillary sinus is recommended when implant treatment is planned for those areas.

Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the mechanism of promoted skin wound healing in skin defects with primary cultured oral mucosal keratinocytes. Materials and methods: Thirty adult female nude mice weighing $20{\pm}2g$ were used for the experiment. Primary cultured and suspended oral mucosal keratinocytes, labeled with BrdU, were scattered onto $1.5cm{\times}1.5cm$ sized full thickness skin defects in the experimental group(N=15), and no grafts were placed the control group(N=15). They were sacrificed at 3 days, 1 week and 2 weeks after the treatment respectively. Histological examination of each wounds were performed to review the healing progress on measuring the length from the wound margin to regenerating epithelial front. The role of keratinocytes were assessed by double immunohistochemical staining with Anti-BrdU and Anti-cytokeratin AE1/3. Results: In the experimental group the wound was completely covered with regenerating epithelia in 2 weeks, but partially regenerated in the control group. The immunohistochemical studies unexpectedly reveal that most of regenerating epithelial cells were induced from marginal epithelium of the margin, not from the scattered keratinocytes. Conclusion: We could successfully confirm that graft of primary cultured oral mucosal keratinocytes promotes the regeneration of skin defects.
The aim of present investigation was to clinically measure the thickness of palatal masticatory mucosa in the hard palate as potential donor site for mucogingival surgery, to determine the relation to shape of palatal vault, form of tooth, gender, and to serve the clinical criteria t o choose the proper surgical technique. 84(mean age:25yrs) systemically and periodontally healthy volunteers participated in this study and 18 standard measurement points were defined in the hard palate, located on 3 lies which ran at different distances parallel to the gingival margin. 6 positions were designated on each of these 3 lines between the level of canine and 2nd molar and a bone sounding technique using a periodontal probe with minimal local anesthesia was utilized to assess the thickness of palatal masticatory mucosa. Student t-test was used to determine the difference in mucosal thickness between 2 groups gender, shape of palatal vault (high palatal vault vs. low palatal vault), tooth form (short-wide vs. long narrow) The result of this study were as follows: 1. Soft tissue thickness progressively increased in sites further away from the gingival margin (p<0.01). 2. Depending on position, in line a and line c the masticatory mucosal thickness increased from Ca to M2(p<0.01), but in line b the thickness increased from Ca to P2, and decreased to M1 and increased again to M2. 3. Gender did not influence the thickness of masticatory mucosa. 4. Palatal vault shape was associated with the thickness of masticatory mucosa. Thickness of low palatal vault group was thicker than high palatal group between P2 and M2 position. 5. Form of tooth did not influence the thickness of masticatory mucosa. In conclusion, palatal vault shape was associated with the thickness of masticatory mucosa. So, mucogingival surgery can be considered as a treatment modality in high palatal vault group. But, Gender and tooth form did not influence the thickness of masticatory mucosa.
The effects of ethanol extract from radish seeds on gastrointestinal function in rats were investigated. Rats were divided into 2 groups of 8 rats each, the basal group and the radish seed ethanol extract group. The radish seed ethanol extract group had a significantly decreased gastrointestinal transit time, but a significantly increased fecal weight compared with the basal group. The radish seed ethanol extract group also had significantly higher duodenal villus height and greater colonic mucosal thickness than the basal group. The radish seed ethanol extract group had a greater proliferation of 5-bromo-2-deoxy-uridine (BrdU) immunoreactive cells in the gastric mucosa as well as in the mucosa and submucosa of the small and large intestine than did the basal group. Thus, radish seed ethanol extract may be useful in preventing constipation based on the observation of an increase in fecal weight, a decrease in gastrointestinal transit time, and positive changes in the intestinal mucosa.
Lower lip reconstruction in cases with a full-thickness defect over one-third of the vermilion is challenging. Numerous conventional techniques have been applied with unsatisfactory surgical outcomes because of microstomia and oral commissure blunting due to shortened horizontal lip length. Herein, we present a case in which a full-thickness lower lip defect of more than one-third of the horizontal lip length was covered with a novel mucosal roofing flap reconstruction to minimize the loss of horizontal lip length and to preserve mouth opening. No recurrences or metastases were observed during 3 years and 6 months of follow-up, with horizontal lower lip length maintained and mouth opening of 2.5 finger breadths.
The influence of eating habits and food type on the ultrastructural characteristics of the digestive tracts was studied under the scanning and transmission electron microscopes in two crustacean decapods (Hemigrapsus penicillatus De Haan; mud crab, Pinnotheres cyclinus Shen; symbiotic crab). The relative ratio of the length of midgut versus hindgut was 1:1 in the mud crab, but 4:1 in the symbiotic crab. Observation through the scanning electron microscope revealed that the midguts of both species have densely-arranged longitudinal mucosal folds with a smooth surface. In the hindgut of the mud crab, mucosal folds were longitudinally oriented, clusters of two to five spines were observed on the cuticular surface, and the length of the spine in the distal hindgut was longer than that in the proximal portion. In the symbiotic crab, the mucosal folds were irregulary arranged, and numerous rudimentary spinal structures were noted on the cuticular surface. Through observation of a transmission electron microscope, the epithelial cells of the midgut in both species had numerous microvilli, but the length of the microvilli was slightly longer in the mud crab than in the symbiotic crab. The central layer of the basement membrane and the muscular layer of the midgut were more developed in the mud crab than in the symbiotic crab. The thickness of the cuticular layer over the hindgut surface in the mud crab was about 4 times than that of the symbiotic crab.
Objectives: This study reports a clinical case that showed improvement in the symptoms of a patient with acute gastric mucosal lesion (AGML) through ultrasound. Methods: A 90-year-old woman with AGML was treated with Korean medicine treatments, including Hyangsapyeongwisan Soft Ext, acupuncture, and moxibustion. The responses before and after treatment were evaluated using ultrasound imaging and the numerical rating scale (NRS). Results: After treatment, ultrasound imaging showed improvement in gastric mucosa thickness, from 1.45 cm to 0.53 cm at the anterior wall and from 1.25 cm to 0.36 cm at the posterior wall. The NRS scores for epigastric pain, nausea, and dizziness all decreased, and the symptoms of diarrhea disappeared. Conclusion: This study suggests that Korean medicine treatment can be a therapeutic option in treating the symptoms of patients with AGML.

We investigated the effects of aqueous extract from talc for suppression in the process of cyclophosphamide-induced cystitis in the rat. The weight of urinary bladder was increased in the cyclophosphamide-injected rat compared with normal, but the increase of weight was arrested by intake of talc. More similar results showed in the uric test involving nitrate content and blood cell number and serum analysis involving the content of blood urea nitrogen and uric acid in the talc challenged rat compared with control one. More severe histological changes of urinary bladder such as edema, wall thickness, bleeding, vacuolation in mucosal epithelium were demonstrated in the rat injected with cyclophosphamide compared with normal. Fewer scores of these changes such as edema and bleeding were observed in rats treated with talc. In the immunohistochemical analysis, the expression of inflammatory-related protein examined tended to increase in the urinary bladder of cyclophosphamide-injected rat, especially COX-2 and $TNF-{\alpha}$ in mucosal epithelium and iNOS and $IL-1{\beta}$ in mucosal and muscular layer. The decline of these immunoreation were observed in the talc treated rat, significant decrease of COX-2 was detected in mucosal epithelium and iNOS in submucosal layer. These results suggest that talc may use as a useful therapeutic agent for noninfectious cystitis.
