The purpose of this study was to asses the etlect of Uncaria rhynchophylla (UR). one of the oriental herbs having a capability to block calcium channels, on affecting vestibular compensation (VC) in Sprague - Dawley rats. Animals were divided into a drug treatment group receiving, UR per oral for 10 days preceding unilateral labyrinthectomy (ULX) and a control group with saline ingestion, To evaluate behavioral changes. horizontal spontaneous nystagmus (SN) and roll head tilt (RHT) were recorded by a video camem with zoom lens in the course of vestibular compensation (VC). Immunohistochemical staining was performed by conventional ABC method to visualize cFos-like immunoreactive (cFLI) neurons in the medial vestibular nuclei (MVN) and cFLI cells were counted by image analyzer. Bodyweight was increased significantly, about 35g, by UR treatment for 10 clays before ULX. Compared with the control group, the drug group showed significant reduction of RHT 6 hrs after ULX as well as fast disappearance of SN at early stages of vestibular compensation. Also, recovery of the spatial and temporal cFLI expressions in the bilateral MVN was accelerated 24 hrs after ULX. These results suggest that Uncaria rhynchophyila has a beneficial effect to ameliorate vestibular compensation in unilateral labryinthectomized rats.
Objective : To evaluate the effect of Oriental Medical Treatment on a patient with Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy followed by Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Method : We applied various methodology of Oriental Medical Treatment including Acupuncture, Electroacupuncture, Physical treatment, Herbal Medicine, Moxibustion treatment and Western medication as well. Result: Herbal medicine was applied on the basis of the patient's history. We applied formular to remove phelgm as a pathogenic factor after Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy. At the same time, considering the patient spent more than a month in ICU lacking appropriate nutrition, we used formuli on the basis of 'Deficiency of Spleen' focusing to vitalize the function of digestive system. As the condition of the patient changed, we also adapted formular accordingly. We prescribed Herbal medication to strengthen Yin and Yang equally as she got hospitalized for long time. Also we applied Acupuncture treatment and Moxibustion treatment to control Qi flow. The general condition of the patient got better with successful removal of Foley catheter and elevated Glasgow Coma scale. We used Electroacupuncture, Physical treatment and Western medication at the same to get maximized effect on relaxing the contracted muscle. According to the Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS), we have some changes in muscle spasticity but later, the effect was not that significant. Conclusion : We had a patient with Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy followed by Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. In the management of Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy, Conservative treatments are the mainstream but there are not many alternatives. Therefore, We suggest that Oriental medical approach may contribute to the management of Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy.
Bee venom is used as a traditional medicine for treatment of arthritis. The anti-inflammatory activity of the n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and aqueous partitions from bee venom (Apis mellifera) was studied using cyclooxygenase (COX) activity and pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-$\alpha and IL-1\beta$) production, in vitro. COX-2 is involved in the production of prostaglandins that mediate pain and support the inflammatory process. The aqueous partition of bee venom showed strong dose-dependent inhibitory effects on COX-2 activity ($IC_{50} = 13.1 \mu$ g/mL), but did not inhibit COX-1 activity. The aqueous partition was subfractionated into three parts by molecular weight differences, namely, B-F1 (above 20 KDa), B-F2 (between 10 KDa and 20 KDa) and BF-3 (below 10 KDa). B-F2 and B-F3 strongly inhibited COX-2 activity and COX-2 mRNA expression in a dose-dependent manner, without revealing cytotoxic effects. TNF-$\alpha and IL-1\beta$ are potent pro-inflammatory cytokines and are early indicators of the inflammatory process. We also investigated the effects of three subfractions on TNF-$\alpha and IL-1\beta$ production using ELISA method. All three subfractions, B-F1, B-F2 and B-F3, inhibited TNF-$\alpha and IL-1\beta$production. These results suggest the pharmacological activities of bee venom on anti-inflammatory process include the inhibition of COX-2 expression and the blocking of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-$\alpha and IL-1\beta$) production.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the usability of live blood analysis on interior and exterior vascular laser irradiation therapy. Methods : We had analyzed the changing forms of the live blood sample with microscope before and after vascular laser irradiation therapy of blood. The live blood analysis was operated on Rouleau of red cell, erythrocyte aggregation, thrombocyte aggregation, uric acid crystals, red crystals, protoplasts. First, we analyzed all patients on each item, then did same thing classified two groups, Interior and exterior. Results : Rouleau of red cell, erythrocyte aggregation, thrombocyte aggregation, uric acid crystals, red crystals, protoplasts were decreased significantly, after interior and exterior aggregation, uric acid crystals. Interior vascular laser irradiation therapy was more effective than interior on Rouleau of red cell, erythrocyte aggregation, thrombocyte aggregation, uric acid crystals. Interior vascular laser irradiation therapy was more effective than exterior on red crystals, protoplasts. Conclusions : This study suggests that live blood analysis has the usability on vascular laser irradiation therapy. Then according to interior and exterior vascular laser irradiation therapy, the result has some different on each item. So it is better that choose the method, interior or exterior, for more effective therapy.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to examines the domestic study trends on adenomyosis treated with Korean medicine. Results: As a result, 12 records (14 cases) were found to be analyzed according to their modes of diagnosis, symptoms, interventions, treatment period, follow up period and relevant outcomes. In diagnosis of adenomyosis, the most used method was ultrasonography. The most common complaint for patients with adenomyosis was dysmenorrhea. The most applied intervention for adenomyosis was herbal medication. Acupuncture was the second most used. Conclusions: Analyzing the domestic study trends would be helpful to establish a basic knowledge of the future study. It is anticipated that this review benefits the future in-depth study to confirm the efficacy of Korean medicine treatments for adenomyosis.
Background: The purpose of this study was to redefine the location of acupoints in the lower abdomen by taking actual thoracic and abdominal measurements. Methods: Measurements of the length and height of the thorax, and both the upper and lower abdominal area were compared to standard values defined by the World Health Organization Western Pacific Region (WHO/WPRO), and medical text books such as Miraculous Pivot, and A-B Classic of Acupuncture and Moxibustion. These measurements were used to redefine the standard of 1 cun, and the cun value of the lower abdomen. Results: Of the 60 studies screened, all studies used the cun measurement system. Considerable variation in the localization of acupoints in the lower abdominal area were detected. The average measurement of a typical male lower abdomen was within 6.33 cun to 6.34 cun. From this data, 6.5 cun appears to be more accurate than the current standardized length of 5 cun. The standardized index values of the width of the 4 fingers, and the distance from the lateral prominence from the greater trochanter to the popliteal crease (Fm), appeared to apply to only males, as defined by the WHO/WPRO. Conclusion: Further studies on standardizing the index measurements for the lower abdominal area are necessary. For males, the more accurate standardized length of the lower abdomen was 6.5 cun, whereas for females, the measurement would typically be longer than 6.5 cun.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to increase the utilization of Korean Medicine Clinical Practice Guidelines(KMCGP) for ankle sprain by investigating the recognition of guideline developed in 2015 and evaluating the current status of treatment. Methods: An e - mail questionnaire survey was conducted for Korean medicine doctor(K.M.D) registered in Korean Medicine Association. Survey data were analyzed through Excel. Results: The most common Korean medicine treatments used in clinic were acupuncture(adjacent points)(28.5%), cupping therapy(19.7%) and pharmacopuncture(9.8%). The treatments with high patient satisfaction were acupuncture (adjacent points)(27.9%), moxibustion(22.4%) and herbal medicine(10.4%). Herbal medicine(17.9%), tuina(10.7%) and embedding therapy(9.2%) were difficult to perform during treatment because of cost. In the case of a later revision, respondents most thought it is necessary to update evidence and adjust recommendation ratings. A majority of all respondents said they would like to know about the revised guideline through the Internet. In the expected revision effect, the first order was 'presentation of standardized treatment method', the second was 'establishing the basis of Korean medicine treatment', and the third was 'strengthening the status of Korean medicine as therapeutic medicine'. Many respondents wished to add exercise therapy. In order to increase the utilization rate of the guideline, many respondents thought it should be included in textbooks and 90.6% of respondents answered that they would use more than 50% of the revised guideline. Conclusion: It is necessary to update evidence and adjust recommendation ratings and to promote KMCGP. At the same time treatment methods should be taught to K.M.D
Objectives This study was conducted to characterize scoliosis patients visiting Korean medicine hospital and to analyze the demands and factors affecting discomfort. Methods This retrospective study analyzed 33 scoliosis patients who visited Korean medicine hospital from March, 2021 to October, 2021. The data analysis consisted of three factors: (1) demographic characteristics, (2) characteristics of demands on Korean medicine (reasons for choosing Korean medical treatment, preferred treatment methods, most uncomfortable part, treatment priorities) and (3) discomfort factors (treatment experiences, diagnosed age and Cobb's angle). Statistical analyses were performed and a p-value≤0.05 was considered to be statistically significant. Results 43.75% of the patients chose 'effectiveness' for the reason why they preferred Korean medicine treatment. 'Chuna treatment' was the most preferred treatment method. The patients chose 'lower back' for the most uncomfortable part and 'pain' for the highest priority of improvement. The Cobb's angle of included patients was 16.02±7.65° and it is not much differ to average of Cobb's angle in Korean. Discomfort was more severe in the patients with treatment-experienced than treatment-naive. The score of discomfort in appearance and psychological were higher in the patients diagnosed in childhood or adolescent period than who were diagnosed after adult. Classification based on Cobb's angle showed no statistical difference. Conclusions Not only Cobb's angle but also other clinical factors should be considered for effective treatment in scoliosis. Also, It is necessary to pay attention to adult scoliosis patients.
Objectives: This study investigated the latest clinical studies on Korean medicine treatment of idiopathic edema in the Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure Database (CNKI). Methods: We searched the last 9 years of clinical studies discussing Oriental medicine-based treatments for idiopathic edema in the CNKI database. The search focused on the authors, publication year, type of study, purposes of study, method and duration of treatment, evaluation criteria, and results of the selected articles. Results: The search identified 7 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and 9 others. All studies used oral herbal medicine for treatment. The most commonly used herbs were Poria Sclerotium (茯苓), Atractylodis Rhizoma Alba (白朮), and Alismatis Rhizoma (澤瀉), which are the constituent herbs of Oryeong-san (五苓散). All 16 studies confirmed the efficacy of Oriental medicine treatments. Conclusion: More varied and scientifically designed clinical studies are required to develop treatments for idiopathic edema. The results of this study could be used as basic data for further studies on idiopathic edema.
Objectives : Hypothyroidism is a common endocrine disorder in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone. It can cause a number of symptoms, such as tiredness, poor ability to tolerate cold, and weight gain. The purpose of this study was to report the clinical effects of herbal medicine on hypothyroidism.
